I'm becoming a big fan of Kone. He's tall, strong, talented and cool-headed. Simply loved his calm scoring that winning PK. Can't wait to see him mature for the 2026 WC.

Nobody is expecting Canada to win so I don't think there's any outside pressure. The only pressure would come from themselves and their own expectations

I think more of the pressure is on Argentina, as they are expected to win and Canada is looked at as lucky to be here. (even though they deserve it). I think it frees Canada up more than Argentina. Let's hope for the biggest upset in football! Come on CANADA!! Let's go!

Qualifying for the World Cup in the manner which Canada did is more impressive. Top of the region, not losing to US or Mexico, and asserting themselves as leaders in the region.
This Copa is amazing and if they had made the World Cup via the New Zealand playoff after losing to the perennial top nation in CONCACAF I would say that this is more impressive. Just the manner in which they qualified was better.
As someone who had their hopes crushed in a 8-1 loss and has been a supporter of the National team for 20 years it is absolutely wonderful that we can even have this discussion.
Let's beat Argentina and bring the Copa as far north as it has ever been!

We should just celebrate that we've had TWO of these amazing moments in just a few years! lol. Qualifying for the WC was Canada finally arriving, reaching the semi's of the Copa America is the world finally noticing. Qualifying for the WC was probably our toughest test. Yet, whether it's right or not, in the rest of the worlds eyes getting results against Conmebol teams like Chile, Peru, Venezuela, and causing Argentina some trouble is a much bigger deal I think.

To make a correct analysis, it should be measured based on the form and the impact. If we were to talk about the form, it could be said that it is 50-50, because it managed to qualify first over the US and Mexico, in a round-robin format. everyone, while in the Copa America he did so playing a very South American style, and always in front surprising everyone. If we talk about the impact at an international level, being in the semi-finals has an important media impact for being in a privileged position in an important tournament and at the highest level throughout the continent and for the teams present, only behind the World Cup and slightly of the European Championship, and unfortunately Canada did not score a single point in the group stage of the World Cup, so the local impact of its classification did not have an echo in the World Cup. So we could say that it is actually slightly more important to be in the semifinals of the Copa América than the World Cup Qualification and it is not over yet, you have the chance to fight to be in the final which would be more noticeable than the difference or at least a third place, which would also be historic.

It is normal for Venezuelan players to say that qualifying for the World Cup is the more significant achievement; qualifying in the CONMEBOL is really hard (not anymore, because now it's like the top 6 teams that go to the WC), so it is a more significant achievement for them, and they have never done it. For Canada, reaching the semis is a more significant achievement because, with the team they have, you should expect to qualify for the WC.

Y'all should note. Osorio comes out for big games. He doesn't score often, but in the biggest games on the biggest stages he has a tendancy to show up on the score sheet (Assist or goal) - It would be shocking to see if he didn't have a massive impact if he gets the start.
(I would recommend him on the start, and then sub him for penalty kicks - he was never a strong on pens... basically, what marcsh did last game made a whole bunch of sense)

I think for non-football fans (esp here in Canada) the world-cup was the most impressive...however, as a football fan the feat of getting to the semi's in COPA is just as or slightly more impressive, you have to take into account the close games, draws etc in this evaluation for COPA (imho).

i hope canada can create some chances and score a goal (they need to finish better) while making a game of it and keeping it close. 2-1 argentina or even 3-1 would be respectable. anything more for canada would be miraculous. i'm not opposed to miracles but it's great experience regardless. they've already exceeded expectations.

@@jennifer9522 Yeah I don' think so. Olympic soccer is U23 and doesn't count the way this tourny does. Of course the women's Olympics is not U23, but it is - and no slight intended - women's soccer. In the eyes of the world, women's soccer is simply not as important. So with all due respect, this upcoming match is the biggest in Canadian soccer history. Maybe you could take a poll and see what people think? Honestly, Olympic gold for soccer is just not that big - it's different than say Ice Hockey where Olympic Gold is no. 1.

Qualifying for the World Cup against underwhelming teams like the US and Mexico is certainly not as big of an accomplishment as making it to Copa semis (the 2nd most competitive continental tournament after Euros). Other than this talented Canada side, CONCACAF teams have been an absolute joke this generation 😂

In addition to all that's been said, Canada is a young team on the rise. A team which hasn't reached all its potential yet. On the other hand, Argentina is an aging team which has already peaked during the WC and now needs renovation but that renovation is not happening. That is another reason to believe Canada has a real chance to make history tonight.

Also complaining players won’t admit (or be forced) to pressure that they may not feel is crazy!!🤪 American here-not understanding that culture at all! We’d just brag about all of it. CANADA qualifying for the WC was huge, mainly topping the group over MEXICO and US. IMO advancing out of a group from qualifiers in a major tourney is more significant although at the time CANADA getting to the WC was huge as it rarely occurred in its history. CANADA makes the biggest move on the FIFA ranking come the 17th

Such a fiery debate between Canadians! 😂 I have to say I might side with Oliver on the semifinal appearance and Jordan on the breakout player. I’d never heard of Shaffelburg before and his appearances in the warm-up games made me think he was a good sub, but what he’s done at the tournament is incredible. I love Crépeau, but I knew about him as the starting keeper of 1 in F the best MLS teams before.

    @Coach-xo1wr 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

This was a very odd discussion. It amazes me that we have two commentators ( Gareth Wheeler and Jordan Wilson) who don't understand what it means to not be under pressure. Of course Canada is under some sort of pressure as they are athletes who play to win but we are facing the defending World Cup Champions and Number 1 ranked team in the world ( Argentina) who have won 19 of their last 20 matches. No ties, all wins. So they are the heavy favorites and if they were to lose to Canada, there would be all kinds of negative commentary towards Argentina and much less positive for Canada. Argentina is expected to win this game and anything less would be deemed a failure to them and thier fans. If Argentina wins this game, it is expected and nobody has anything bad to say about Canada. We would be proud of them regardless and they will get some much deserved respect. Only thing that would hurt the Canadians is if we get blown out.
In regards to the question about which run was more impressive for Canada, once again the same two commentators don't seem to understand the question. The question was not what is more important or bigger, the question is what is more impressive. It was awesome to qualify for the World Cup but teams like Honduras, Mexico and El Salvador were nowhere near the quality of previous years. The Americans are struggling internally and Jamaica, Costa Rica and Panama are not strong either. Adding in Covid as another reason is another absolutely head scratching point. Every country was dealing with Covid back then, not just Canada. Canada is the ONLY CONCACAF country in the final four and have 2 wins a loss and 1 draw against South American teams. That is huge to say. The weakness of CONCACAF proved itself in this very tournament.
    - The Americans were terrible and undisciplined, they never even made it out of their group and their only win was against the lowest ranked country ( Bolivia).
    - Jamica lost all three matches and looked awful. Didn't make it out of their group.
    - Mexico didn't make it out of their group. They never seemed to be a threat to anybody and are nowhere near the team they used to be.
    - Costa Rica never made it out of their group.
    - Panama was the only other country from our region to make the playoffs and they got absolutely destroyed by Columbia 5-0.
Lastly, Venezuela looked very impressive in pool play. They went 3-0 and gave up one goal. Canada outplayed them and with better finishing around the net, would have won without penalties. That and a horrible goal given up.
The question regarding Shaffelburg and Crepeau. Once again the same two guys stick together but what bothers me is Gareth Wheeler is supposed to be a supporter of Canadian Soccer but seems to find a way to put down Crepeau. Oliver was referring to Gareth ( who seemed clueless) about some people didn't have Crepeau as the starting goalkeeper. In fact, Wheeler has pointed out numerous times that Crepeau is too small. Shaffelburg has been impressive but keep in mind he has not played a full game, which includes the one he started and Canada doesn't get through to the semi finals without the incredible penalty kicks performance by Crepeau.
Thumbs up to Oliver Platt and Alexandre Gangue- Ruzic for keeping the conversation normal and having great points. Their points have nothing to do with recency bias as mentioned by Gareth.

Wheeler years ago came across as a passionate pundit for TFC. In recent years, he's borderline unlistenable with what seems to be narcissism mixed with a weird desire to argue. It's not making for more compelling debate because the counter points are all presented with scoff's and loudness rather than well thought out points - it's like he's trying to be on First Take without realizing that that shit doesn't play well to a Canadian audience. Would much rather this panel with Wheeler.
