Actually even in neighborhoods without HOAs I hear people complain about commercial vehicles, including work trucks with company logos, parked in driveways overnight. The issue is that they feel small businesses are taking advantage of neighborhoods by parking commercial equipment there for free, and it makes the neighborhood look more commercial and less like a quiet residential area. Unfortunately, going forward, it appears that the average person won’t be able to count on their neighborhoods to be a quiet sanctuary from work like they were in the past. Things are changing and there are a lot of forces acting on suburbs now, including a house-less generation that wants to convert them into densely packed triplexes and small apartment buildings.

There might be a self-selection problem with some HOA boards. The people eager to do it might not be the best choices. Or, it might be a legal concern that’s pushing them to be so overzealous. There’s some legal principle that if rules are not uniformly enforced, associations can be sued and prevented from enforcing them at all. Personally, it sounds like the landscaping rules need to be completely revamped and probably dramatically reduced.

The landscaping rules in HOAs seem to be archaic and completely out of touch with environmental realities from everything I’ve heard. Nutrient runoff is destroying Florida lakes and wetlands (some real horror stories have come out of the southern part of the state in particular) and I think the state could argue that they are protecting public land by restricting those HOA rules.
This is actually a simple one. No one likes being told what to do with "their" home. Before anyone signs their purchase and sale agreement they are made aware of the neighborhood covenants by their realtor. HOA rules are always spelled out in advance and agreed to by the purchaser during the sale procedure. If one can't abide by the rules in a community maybe one shouldn't buy there.
Have you ever tried to go through one of those “rule books”? They’re HUGE. Nobody has time to go through and retain every word. A lot of folks just take their pickup trucks for granted and think one couldn’t possibly be told they’re not allowed to keep it on the property. My friend’s pickup is gorgeous and worth at least twice what my vehicle is worth but he can’t park it here overnight because of HOA rules. It’s so silly.
Why are they painting this guy as a victim? HOA have been abusing their power for DECADES. Just because you can park your truck outside doesn't mean the neighborhood will look like a dump.
I would find a typical neighborhood HOA to be too restrictive for my tastes. No one should be surprised by the rules after they move in though, unless they had a really poor agent that didn’t stress the importance of reading the rules and covenants before putting in an offer.
@ystebadvonschlegel3295 that's the complete opposite of freedom by not allowing someone who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy a house, and not allow them to park their vehicle in the driveway just because it's not a traditional car, but instead their work truck, or a personal truck.

Most HOAs in the United States operate illegally. In my state you have to take a class, pass a test and get a certificate to be on an HOA board. The board must be 100% certified or it cannot levy fines. I got certified, got on my board and found out that I was the only one certified. The board had been levying fines for years illegally. When they tried to fine me, I took them to small claims court and proved none of the other board members were certified. Easy win.

Parking in the street or in the front yard does make a neighborhood look trashy! But parking in a driveway is normal and expected, regardless of the vehicle you own.
I’ve lived in a non-HOA neighborhood in Colorado for the last 24 years. It’s a nice, quiet neighborhood with typical family homes. No one parks their cars on their lawn or paints their house pink. I cannot remember a single occurrence during that time when someone had parked anything like the “obnoxious vehicles” that guy was describing. And even if they had, the neighbors I have are not so uptight to care. I’m entertaining the idea of selling my house and moving out of state, and one of the concerns I have is either finding another non-HOA home or one in an HOA with very few rules. I absolutely hate the thought of having to live in an HOA neighborhood.
Get over yourself. We live in a suburb of Boston. There is no HOA. There is a house down street that is pink. I don’t particularly care for the color, but so what? It is their house, not mine, and the color they chose doesn’t impact the value of my house whatsoever. A house down the street became rundown as the elderly homeowner declined. That didn’t affect my home value. Eventually that homeowner passed and his 1,300 sq ft ranch was replaced by a 2,500 sq ft colonial that is now worth about $1.5M. The house across the street also got run down as the elderly couple declined. They have passed and a contractor is rebuilding the house. That also hasn’t affected our home value. You know what has affected our home’s value? Our excellent school system. Out 1,500 sq ft ranch built in 1950 on a cut through street is worth over $700k. You don’t have to make everyone else live how you do in order to preserve your home’s value. You simply want to control how your neighbors live, which is truly arrogant and disgusting.
I would say you got lucky in getting neighbors that shared your ideas about what is and isn’t appropriate. You might feel differently if even a single neighbor (or overseas investor) wanted to make money by renting out their house to twenty adults who filled the street and front yard with their cars, and used the backyard to store commercial vehicles. This is, unfortunately, not an uncommon scenario and is becoming even more frequent as housing gets more expensive.
@@aliannarodriguez1581 No, there are zoning laws and town bylaws that prevent such behavior. And if a neighbor is a plumber and parks his work van in the driveway, so what? By all accounts the premise and reality of the 2006 comedy “Idiocracy” is just around the corner, thankfully. We’re getting closer each and every day! And I, for one, just can’t WAIT to have a machine gun-toting, neck and face tattoo-wearing President/Dictator for life running the show! It’s gonna be GREAT. Just you wait and see. Freedom for everybody! 😅
Correct. 👍
This is America last I checked and if I want to have my registered junker of a car sitting on my driveway and paint my house hot pink, Damn it, it's my right
And who would want to live next to that? Which is why people go live in an HOA and end up in this predicament.
Not in a hoa you’re not. 🤷♂️
I don't live in an HOA community in CA. I put a tarp and a few bricks on the roof of my old car temporarily to keep water from leaking in. My sunroof won't close properly. Some neighborhood karen called the cops to complain I was violating some city ordinance and the cops actually left a note on my car saying I was violating some ordinance. I moved my car onto my driveway. I then put more bricks on the roof and left the bricks there permanently. I would have drawn a "middle finger to the karens" picture and taped it to the back of my car but that's going too far and there are kids in the neighborhood.
Doubt subside with a junker would buy an upscale house.
As one who rents air B&Bs in Florida, it was discussing that the HOAs had deals with toe companies to go through the streets at night and look for even cars, in driveways, that maybe had part of the vehicle over the sidewalk. Then they toe it. You wake up and your vehicle is gone. It's descusting and I'm glad that something is being done. This was needed for a long time.
LOL! The HOA member sounds like a Karen who wants POWER!
I don't care what is parked on my neighbors driveway. It's their property, they can park whatever they want, even RV. I also live in HOA community but our HOA is very very easy with any of your rights including exterior paint, roof color, window styling, cars in driveway or on street and fencing or no fencing, they don't care. Also this is fairly new community with amenities like Trash pickup, Swimming Pool, Play area and snow removal!
One thing: I wouldn't consider trash pickup and snow removal amenities. I'd call them necessities.
People should be able to park what ever they want as long as is in their property cause they pay a lot for their property on top pay taxes and HOA . The HOA should regulate the street not the property that belongs to the owner
They've tried that but the county owns the street not the hoa lol hoas are pointless and need to go
I agree with this HOA
yes like the old days. 3 color chevy on blocks.
Or only have HOAs manage community centers and throw parties for the neighborhood and THAT'S IT!
This is a kind of class envy. Pickup trucks equate to rednecks. We're better than that. We are rich, and we want to look like it! If you work for a living you are not welcome here.
Who wants to live like this?
Imagine buying a house for $300 Plus, but someone have to decide for you what color to paint your house, what kind of car you drive, what type of fence to install, to me HOA not make any sense. 🏡🚫❌👎🏾
So when the HOA loses this case and pays all court costs..... HOA fees goes up.
Easy win.
What state is that?
I have never have and never will live in any neighborhood with an HOA.
It definitely has its Pros and Cons.
People love them, Lakewood ranch is very popular.
Get over it, Mike. Explain to me how this even affects you except that you're an elitist. People need to make a living.
Mike is your typical Karen
@@markmansel9899male karen..
@@markmansel9899 And wound up tighter than a drum.
It looks trashy and ghetto. If your work vehicle can’t be parked in the garage then leave it at work.
Back when I was in high school I was told that unless you went to college and received a degree then your life would amount to nothing.
Most college people I see today still live with their parents and are up to their eyeballs in debt.
Old people who are retired are the only ones who belong in an HOA. This is what I am understanding.
No shooting in the backyard, no BBQ, no pick up trucks, no work vehicles, and a whole lot of telling you what to do. This is old retired territory.
So, I say, those old people who are retired who want an HOA, go to a place where everyone thinks like you. The Villages.
HOAs in the land of the free is a bizarre contradiction.
a dichotomy?
Yeah I was being fined 400$ a month for my truck bumper being 5 inches passed the sidewalk!!! I had lived there 4 years no problem. The second phase got built and the HOA was enacted and then the TYRANTS CAME ALIVE!!
I moved into a subdivision WITHOUT an HOA!!!
I haven’t heard of a situation like that before. Did the developer share the planned covenants with you before you made the purchase? If not, I would talk to a lawyer.
@@aliannarodriguez1581 this was 18 years ago. I don’t remember. But even if there was something written out about Blocking a sidewalk,,, I wasn’t BLOCKING it.. 36 in sidewalk in a 8 ft span leaving 32 inches for pedestrians??? That’s worth fining me 400$ a month? If you say yes to this then you probably are one of those types..
@@1073wheeler I was just trying to understand how they jump started the HOA like that. A rule that allowed them to implement a $400 fine for that is pretty crazy, and it’s the kind of thing we would all like to be warned about before we put our money down for a house, not after the fact. It sounds like the developer was hiding things to keep people from turning and running.
People should worry about their own property.
But many don't swing sets front lawn, cars that haven't moved in years, leaking oil. Trash neighbors suck!
They need someone on their board with some common sense.
Those boards attract people who have never had any authority in their lives. Frustrated cops, frustrated polititions, frustrated failures. Give them a little authority and watch them demonstrate class envy in a big way.
They should ban Miller as well
Parking in the street or in the front yard does make a neighborhood look trashy!
That wouldn't lower my property value either and it would let me know he is a plumber and could do work for me when I need it.
You need to visit New England and the Midwest. You will find many, many very nice communities with varied housing stock that don't all look the same, that don't have HOAs, and are very nice places to live. Stop trying to control how your neighbors live. It's not any of your business what color they paint their house or what plants they grow in their garden or what color they paint their fence, or if they park a pickup truck in their driveway. None of that will reduce the value of your home -- you may think it will but you are wrong. Stop with the kneejerk reaction to try to control others. Live and let live and you will be a lot happier.
We have lived in our home for over 30 years and neighbors have come and gone. Our experience has nothing to do with luck.
@@aliannarodriguez1581what you describe literally DOES NOT happen. 😂
Florida is different, people love freedom and will park rv on sidewalk, work trucks on the front lawn, they want and need HOA.
