THANK YOU!!!!! We've spent a ton of money with a mechanic trying to figure out what's wrong with my 97 Prelude when all it needed was a $98 part from O'Reilly that my husband was able to install!! It immediately drove better and the D4 / engine light instantly went off. Fingers crossed its a permanent fix. Can't thank you enough for posting this video!!! : )
Our 2000 Prelude VTi-R (DOHC-VTEC 2,2lt) & just experienced this problem and also slight speed changes without prompting. The car sort of jerks forward now as well without you doing anything . Pretty freaky, so not driving it till fixed. First the speedo went erratic, then 'D4" dash lights stayed on and flashing regardless of gear and hopefully it is the speed sensor. I will try this today. Thanks for the Video still helping in 2019. I will report back. Cheers
Thanks for your vid! I have a '98 Prelude with the same symptoms: D4 light flashing, flickering or no speedo, check engine light. Replaced the speed sensor ($45NZD) in 15 mins good as gold. Cheers!
Thanks for the fix Mike had the same problem thought it was the tps sensor or vtec solenoid but it was the speedo sensor, and fortunately I have a second prelude for parts saved me few hundreds thanks Mike
Nice, got the part yesterday and going to install today, it appears to be the same problem, hopefully it will correct the issue and check engine light!
Doing this and the lock out solenoid valve on mine today. Had the same symptoms. Tranny shifts smooth and on time but at low speeds can tell the converter is locking and unlocking Causing rpm variations. Speed sensor is under 30 bucks but the lock out solenoid is around 250 bucks. They can be found cheaper online, if you can wait and have access to order one.
LITERALLY the exact issue happened to me an hour ago while driving. Speedometer crapped out and D4 flashing. Codes were for a speed sensor and trasmission control system. Do you think there's actually an issue with the transmission? Speed sensors are on back order till june so would it be safe to drive my car still or would driving it create more problems?
Appreciate this video Mike! Seems like I have the same problem with my 2001 automatic Prelude. Hope it's just the speed sensor. Do you recall what code(s) you got?
Lock out solenoid is possible. Do the rpms change when rolling at low speed. (Like 10 mph) If it is the lockout it will surge up and down as the converter locks in and out.
Second time it happend to my prelude ..i think every 1year and 3 monts i have to replace it .. duralast part.. i think water in the top of the senssor damage that senssor ..
I have a 99 Honda prelude currently trying to replace the speed sensor but I don't know what color cables goes with what any one knows how color coordinated the cables go
Shouldn't be. VTEC is controlled by rpm and throttle. Sometimes oil pressure issues will cause it not to go into VTEC and also can be caused by bad solenoid.
I have 1997 prelude tiptronic...i have problem with speedsensor but the same time i have some problem with my 1 gear only...before i dont have problem with gears...if somebody can help me i will respect it..
Don't go into Vtec too often with that auto trans. There kinda crappy. Unlike the 5 speeds. I have a 98 Prelude manual with 225000 and still shifting great.
Broo i got a 99. Like starts up fine. Shifts good but when it gets to high rpms it kinda chokes shakes and doesnt accelerate .u think its this sensor? Also when in neutral wont rev up as high as usual
I had a 96 prelude with head work, headers, intake and exhaust. It also had a computer tune. It was a 5 speed and it was fast AF for a little 4 banger. As long as you stayed in VTEC it ran like a mofo. I now have a 2001 with the same engine but stock and automatic tranny. From what I have noticed, if you don't use the slap shift to fully wind each gear it tends to shift before it's is in VTEC range. Resulting in a momentary drop in power before it kicks back to VTEC. I don't know if this is an issue with all the automatic preludes, but with mine I have to use the slap shift if I want to keep it in VTEC through all gears.
4 years later and this video is still helping people. Thank you so much, video was very helpful!
9years later🗿

7 years later and this helped a lot... I'm new to the Honda scene
Thanks for your vid! I have a '98 Prelude with the same symptoms: D4 light flashing, flickering or no speedo, check engine light. Replaced the speed sensor ($45NZD) in 15 mins good as gold. Cheers!
Thanks man. Long day at work. 7 days straight and this is my first day off. Really helps knowing it is not a major problem. Just need the part now.
Thanks for the fix Mike had the same problem thought it was the tps sensor or vtec solenoid but it was the speedo sensor, and fortunately I have a second prelude for parts saved me few hundreds thanks Mike
This was actually really helpful, thanks dude!
glad I could help
I wish I had this video on my Prelude channel but unfortunately I've never had this problem.
Very helpful and very educational video thanks mate.
11yrs later and I fixed my 99 prelude
Date:10/16/24
Thx Mike Rodriguez
Exact same symptoms I'm dealing with great video thanks
Thanks bro had same problem fixed in 15 minutes
Nice, got the part yesterday and going to install today, it appears to be the same problem, hopefully it will correct the issue and check engine light!
Thank you so much! This helped me big time
Gracias Mike ... Fue una gran ayuda tu video....Thank you... Last night I fixed my daughter's 98 prelude...

Clean car this happened to me as well and was very very helpful (:
6/15/2021. Thanks dude!
Very helpful!! Thanks for uploading :)
Melissa Oldham you’re welcome!!!!
autozone is giving me 2 options, there’s a small vss & the one displayed in this video, Which one is preferred?
Sir can U make a video how to change the speed gear sensor?
LITERALLY the exact issue happened to me an hour ago while driving. Speedometer crapped out and D4 flashing. Codes were for a speed sensor and trasmission control system. Do you think there's actually an issue with the transmission? Speed sensors are on back order till june so would it be safe to drive my car still or would driving it create more problems?
What’s the product code for the pin?
What brand the speed sensor u put sir
I honestly do not know. It's been so long
that was helpful
thanks mate
Appreciate this video Mike! Seems like I have the same problem with my 2001 automatic Prelude. Hope it's just the speed sensor.
Do you recall what code(s) you got?
The only sign for me that it was the speed sensor was the flashing D4.
You have to make sure the pin is included, when you order the speed sensor.
did the pin come together with the speed sensor or do i have to buy the pin separately?
would this also fix an ABS wheel lock DTC?
I have a 1989 Prelude. I can’t find a replacement speed sensor ANYWHERE. Someone help please.
Where did U get the Pin for it?
+Mando Alvarez You have to make sure it is included when ordered.
what did you use to remove the two bolts?
A ratchet with an extension and a #10 socket
Mike Rodriguez did you guys have to put grease on the pin or was that just byproduct created overtime?
My speedometer works sorta
But starts bouncing around when I hit 80/90mph
96 prelude
My speedometer still works prefect what should I look for ?
Jesus Chavez I don't understand what is your question or your problem.
Lock out solenoid is possible. Do the rpms change when rolling at low speed. (Like 10 mph)
If it is the lockout it will surge up and down as the converter locks in and out.
Second time it happend to my prelude ..i think every 1year and 3 monts i have to replace it .. duralast part.. i think water in the top of the senssor damage that senssor ..
What website did you get sensor from?
thank you for sharing.
Que sintomas acia?
I noticed you did not lube the pin and it looked like the old one was lubed. Any issues?
+gene cook None
My bad I meant to say the speed sensor connector
Sorry I can't answer your question
Thanks man!
I have a 99 Honda prelude currently trying to replace the speed sensor but I don't know what color cables goes with what any one knows how color coordinated the cables go
If you're replacing the sensor there is no need to replace wires. Unplug the harness, replace the sensor and plug back in.
Is the speed sensor location the same for a 2000 Prelude?
I don't see any reason why they would have moved it elsewhere.
Did your v tech stop working when the speed sensor went out?
I’m having the same problem with my car v tech stoped working did you ever figure yours out
Did you have trouble removing the bolts?
Not at all. But I did spray them with WD-40 just in case.
Did the miles stop going when the sensor wen out??
ralextres Mine stopped in my Honda...
+ralextres Yes, they did.
what size socket do you need to get the vss off?
you just need a 10mm socket
Video was very helpful...is this another reason vtec wont engage?
Shouldn't be. VTEC is controlled by rpm and throttle. Sometimes oil pressure issues will cause it not to go into VTEC and also can be caused by bad solenoid.
Could the speed sensor cause the car to go into limp mode?
most definitely. when it happened to me I thought my transmission was going bad
I haven't seen one go into like mode before from vss fault.
Just check engine light. I guess anything is possible though
Where is locate knock sensor prelude 98. Thanks
Manuel Esquivel I don't understand your question
Manuel Esquivel knock sensor is on the back of the motor next to your oil filter.
It's right above the oil filter on the back of the block. Changing mine this weekend.
I have 1997 prelude tiptronic...i have problem with speedsensor but the same time i have some problem with my 1 gear only...before i dont have problem with gears...if somebody can help me i will respect it..

Gracias. Yo tenia el mismo problema y me dijieron que ers mi trasmision. Que nobservia😂😂
it's been so long I really cannot tell you. but if you Google it you will find different prices
YOUR CHEAK ENGINE IS STILL ON
