  • In this video I show 3 ways that you can use to fix your door that's not closing properly. It may be sagging, installed crooked, rubbing, it's all the same problem. I also show an idea that's an easy fix for a warped door.

    I sort of knew about adjusting hinges to fix a sagging door but didn't know all of the steps. My front door was dropping at least 1/4 inch. I followed all of his simple steps and now my door has perfect gaps all of the way around. Thank you!

    Just did this to two doors that wouldn't close properly and it worked like a charm. It seems unintuitive to bend the knuckles *toward* the jamb the door is hitting, but once you drive the pins back in the hinges, it makes perfect sense, as the relocated knuckles have to align with the jamb knuckes to accommodate the pin. Worked perfectly, but yes, be careful you don't damage the screws in the door. .

  • @IntoTheLightAstrology

    What a great video! My situation is a bit different, though, depending on your reply, I may be good with your method. My door has the same sag as yours as viewed from the top when closed. In this case the frame isn't square! (an apartment 3rd floor). It is far enough off that the striker plate is barely too high for the lowered "tongue"/latch? to enter, unless I lift forcefully on the handle while closing. All the screws were tight, and visually the hinges are screwed in flush. Question: do you think that I may get the needed lift by removing the hinge pins and bending? I already tried to pop out the top and middle pins, and with a hammer and pointy tool they didn't budge! (the doors are only 7 years old).

    • @TheHomeImprovementChannel
      @TheHomeImprovementChannel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      HI, yes bending the hinges should help a lot even if the frame isn't square... Now if the frame is really bad you might correct the problem at the top, but then it might start to rub in a different spot! If the frame isn't "plumb" then the corners at the top are actually square, but just out of plumb.. .then bending the hinges will solve it. If you measure the frame at the top and again in the middle and bottom, this'll give you an idea if you'll wind up with a new problem in a different spot... hope that helps.

    • @garthera7819
      @garthera7819 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Using my makeshift homemade plumb, I can say that it definitely isn't plumb, nor level, nor square. And without first checking with the neighbors I won't even try to remove the hinge pin, as it is tighter than I've ever encountered. In fact with the pin in it feels like those knuckles are misaligned, like the hinge was really tweaked. Anyway, I'll probably try to get either our maintenance (with luck) or pay a pro. If I were to offer a carpenter a fixed fee payment, what's reasonable (for a poor older person). Thanks so much!

    • @TheHomeImprovementChannel
      @TheHomeImprovementChannel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      HI, It does sound like it needs some pretty good tweaking to get it back straight again. Handymen are pretty far apart on pricing so it's hard to say what they would or should charge you. Many of them will charge a service call fee which is understandable in case they run into a short and quick job. Usually the service call fee will cover the first hour... after that they range from 30-70 dollars an hour depending on the person and the area.

    • @IntoTheLightAstrology
      @IntoTheLightAstrology 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheHomeImprovementChannel That's about what I was imagining. I really appreciate your guidance and opinions on this. And by the way, in case you're curious, about half the time I've clicked on your video it starts with youtube selected commercial. That's better than each time! I hope you get something for that...

  • @druekberg
    @druekberg 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hmm, what am I doing wrong? Maybe I have extra strong hinges. Stanley, probably installed when the house was built in 1953. Could not get them to bend with the crescent wrench, only in a vise with vise grips. Both tools scratched up the brass coating. Door still sticks, maybe bowed from hanging clothes on an over-the-door hook on it for years.

    • @TheHomeImprovementChannel
      @TheHomeImprovementChannel  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If those are older hinges they are almost certainly thicker and stronger. This method definitely works on newer hinges that are weaker. Yes a vice is a good alternative for a stronger hinge. Without being able to see it it's hard to say why its still sticking. When you shift the door frame around upon installation that fixes that problem, bending the hinges around simulates moving the whole frame if the frame is out of square.

    Great video. Just a tiny bit hairy. New subscriber here.
    Do you have any tips when the door hinges are made of plastic?

    • @TheHomeImprovementChannel
      @TheHomeImprovementChannel  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the sub! I've never seen plastic hinges. You could replace them with metal ones or try heating them up with a heat gun and bending just a little bit. Should do the same thing. If you use the heating up route, you might have to take them off first so you don't heat the door trim up to much and scorch the paint. I would replace with metal if that's an option.

    What if the door slowly swings open when unlatched, instead of just staying in whatever neutral position you released it in?

    • @TheHomeImprovementChannel
      @TheHomeImprovementChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yea, I've ran into that before. That one isn't so easy. Theres probably something not level or plumb about the door installation. Try taking a level and checking for it to be out of level. Maybe you can adjust the top hinge by chiseling the hinge pocket in a little closer towards the door stop if it's sagging in that direction..

    Can anyone tell me which language/words i need to use to even google my door issue? The door is perfectly flush, brand new hinges with long screws, perfect spacing around the entire door.. however - the top portion of the door closes before the bottom does!! You start to close the door, you hear a tap, you look up and the door is closed on the top left except oh no its actually open from eye level down and if you want to close it you have to press your body hard against it. It seems the door itself is… tilted?

    • @TheHomeImprovementChannel
      @TheHomeImprovementChannel  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      HI... Either the frame is not straight (parallel) with the wall on both sides, or the door itself is warped. If it's way out you might have a little bit of both going on. If it's a minor issue you can wedge something on the top to space it out even further (since that closes first) and try to force the door closed and leave it like that for a day or two. This might warp the door back the other way... If it's way out, you might have to pull the door casing loose and try to re-align the door frame so it better matches up with the door. I hope all that made sense.
