    Matt you should teach other TH-camrs how to squeeze so much information into so little time. I find myself backing up over and over again because your video imparts every bit as much information as your audio, and my brain can only absorb one at a time. I always enjoy these reviews; you say *so much more* than what's indicated by your titles. Brilliant!

    Thank you very much Matt. Your reviews are outstanding. As a matter of fact, because of you I got a Leica M11-P and a 50mm Summilux new version, and the 50mm voigtlander APO and the 21mm color skopar and the 35mm f2 APO (Voigtlander of course) and the 75mm 1.5 (Voigtlander). Thank you, Matt! I agree on the size of the APO on an M camera. I was debating hard and long what to get as 50mm for my M11. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so the Leica APOs were a no go. I was between the Nokton 50mm f1.5ii, the ZM Planar 50mm f2, the ZM Sonar f1.5, and the APO 50mm f2. In the end, I settled for the APO as a do anything lens. My reasoning was getting the best results out of the 60 megapixel of the M11. In the end, I would not mind having all the 50s if I could :) Keep up the great work! PS: I really like the videos where you include footage of you using the lens rather than just narrating and showing pictures. I think you're an amazing photographers and we can learn a lot from you, much more than reviews on gear. Just my 50 cents.

      Hi Elie, thanks! Yes I think the APO is the best non-Leica choice for your M11 to make use of the sensor. Thanks for the feedback. Yes i'm still very much a photographer vs video guy so I often get caught up in the photo taking. If you've not found my Patreon yet I share lots of BTS videos on there showing me in action with models and out and about with info overlay. You might enjoy it. (Linked under videos).

    Renders brilliantly. Though, FM said that the M version did not adapt so well to non-M. I'm still inclined to try it myself.
    The recent Laowa 85mm double-macro APO images look very beautiful as well, despite being a far less ambitious/perfected lens. I think I like the look of APO generally. Thanks again for the report and imagery.

    I have just bought this lens in Poland on a Black Friday deal for £670 equivalent. I’ve only gone out a couple of times to test it but I cannot get over how sharp the corners and edges are at f2! It’s like nothing I have experienced in an M lens before. It’s a little long for my liking but the weight is ok. I better start saving for the Noctilux f1 and then my 50mm focal range is sorted :)

    I had this lens, and my experience is same as yours. I sold it however to get the Zeiss otus 55 mm which is even sharper, stupidly so. I don’t do Portraits, just minimal stuff, hence the trade. But if I went back to Leica, I will pick up the Lanther any time. I loved it.

I own the Voigtländer 50mm F1.2 it’s very nice…lanthar just came to late for me… I do travel and landscape shots and hands down my Voigtländer 21mm F1.4 is my favorite lenses. Yes, I've been hearing a lot about this lens recently so I'm tempted but I love my Voigt 50mm f1.5 (bought on your recommendation) as it has character in abundance and these days I'm buying character over sharpness. I'll try it out and take a look. As a note, I tried my Voigt f1.5 first on my Fuji X-T3 and it was only OK, but when coupled with my Leica SL it really came to life. I found that really interesting.

    I bought the Voigtlander 21mm f/1.4 Nokton for my Sony a7III a couple weeks ago and after reviewing my photos, I bought the 50mm f/1.2 Nokton also. I have used manual lenses on 35mm film cameras for most of my life, and I prefer them for creative control. Working in manual mode on the a7III is needlessly complicated compared to using a mechanical SLR from the film era. I've discovered that since I went digital, it's been more difficult to get the photos I want when relying on my camera CPU to make decisions for me. It's a welcome relief to know that once I set aperture and focus on my Voigtlander lens, it's impossible for my camera to change my settings before I press the shutter release. I own the large and heavy Sony 50mm 1.2 GM, so I know what optical perfection looks like, but I'd still rather use these relatively small and light Voigtlanders. They are very well built, my results are great, and the sun stars are killer too.

I have got the 35mm 2.0 APO Lanthar and the 65mm Macro APO Lanthar Lenses, I am not a fund of 50mm focal length Lenses, I like any Lens shorter or longer in focal length, but I think for those who have a APSC format Camera a 50mm will be ok. All Voigtländer APO Lanthar Lenses are excellent, sharp, very nice colors, very nice bokeh, for the price there are no competition ! Amazing that the 60mm with a Lens design from the first half of the 1970´s still can be compared to modern days Lens designs !

  • @carlosmcse
    @carlosmcse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I think this 50 APO instantly made every entry level 50f2 obsolete. (Also possibly the Leica APO unless you have a money tree growing in your back yard).
    After shooting the ZM for a while I now notice here also that it’s not so much lack of sharpness (god knows the ZM is so sharp), but the harshness of the ZM. I would say the ZM is more for things and not so much a people lens. It’s the harshness the reason I will be changing the ZM for the APO. I’ll upload some shots to my channel if I get the chance and explain why the change. I love the ZM, but it’s definitely too harsh for skin and colors. In B&W is fantastic though. If you want a warmer and more gentle tone then definitely go for the APO.
    Here you can see in your camera test shots, it’s very obvious in the leather of the camera. You can see the leather in the ZM shot looks so harsh in comparison to the APO. It may not seem like a big deal in these test shots, but it is a big deal. The more you shoot the ZM the more it’ll bother you. You’ll spend more of your time editing trying to get rid of it.
    If you shoot architecture and things then it won’t be such a big deal and you’ll really love the ZM.
    I recommended the ZM as the best first 50 for the M, but now with the APO, they’re so close in price that I need to change my recommendation. I would now say, Either get the 50f1.5 II (if you need f1.5) or just get the APO.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Carlos, yes that makes sense and I did find the ZM too harsh for portraits years ago. I can confirm I also got the APO recently and returned the ZM (after this video). I will use it for film and will do a follow up video once shot enough samples. Good to hear you are converted too! Great minds think alike!

    Using Sony now and have the E mount version.. it is a fantastic lens. I prefer it to the Summicron and maybe Summilux for the noticeable sharpness but Summilux still wins in my opinion. It's the bulk/size of the lens and F1.4 over F2. If I don't have to carry it around the Sony 50GM is better than them all. It's a huge lens but the keeper rate is by far the highest. The thing just doesn't miss perfect focus on that eye.

    Re the lens hood for Voigtlander 50mm APO Lanthar f2.0 as well as the 2/35 and a Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm f1.5, original lens hood from respective manufacturers are very expensive. I have purchased a Haoge LH-ZM35 Bayonet Round lens hood on eBay for about less then halve price of Voigtlander and Zeiss ones.

    I bought Voigtlander 35 Apo lens and sold it back the next day after testing it, lost 30pct of it's value, then I preorder Leica Apo Summicron 35mm, for 8x the price and when I got it I use it almost everyday with my M10M. My 35mm Lux went to M10R.
    Voigtlander APO just as sharp, as good as APO M , but it is soo big blocking my viewfinder, and I could not bear that shooting for hours.
    And for that tiny form factor plus close focus capability I am happily pay 8x the price.
    Between a trophy and a consolation price is a matter of a NOSE ahead.

    At 3:53 pausing and looking critically at the f2 comparison the left side looks sharper on the apo and the right side looks sharper on the lux…. Still haven’t found anything better enough to swap out my 50 cron, not that I’m looking though.

      I was doing more testing for myself today, many many 50s, Lux is still King, Cron R did well and 2.8, Cron DR good but lower contrast, ZM is good but others are very similar and with nicer bokeh. Older Nokton 50 1.5 LTM ASPH did well, Canon 50 1.4 LTM ASPH and best value lens still the Nikon 50 f2 AI - beats the Cron easy at f2.

    I had to replay the video several times as it's quite difficult to pay attention to listening while looking at the photos :-P ... now for the lens, this is quite remarkable. I own the APO-M 50. Though honestly I still need to learn how to use a 50 as well as you do. But if I had to start again knowing what I know now, it's hard to justify the APO-M. I'd get the Zeiss ZM planar for sharpness, all around use, and size (which I have today). However for portraits, it's difficult. Assuming cost is not an issue but rather a wise use of money that brings a unique lens render, which one would you get - Nocti 0.95, Nokton 50 1.2, or Summilux-M 50 1.4 ASPH?

    The two APO lenses excel at focusing at infinity at F2 in the corners, world best performance there. But we have to ask ourselves what chances are we need extreme corner sharpness at maximum aperture for infinity focused photos. For every other applications, there seem to be some alternative options do better or at least on par.

      I'd say that it gives landscape/architecture shooters a good head start for sharpness in the corners. Maybe you're shooting at a 4 or 5.6, but your corners are only getting better at that point instead of merely catching up to the center's initial sharpness. Also, the distortion is non-existent at any stop. And Matt says that this is not a portrait lens, but I disagree. This seems like an ultimate coal miner portrait lens!

Use a high ISO, it will reveal it, slow shutter speed? Dang! Missed the exact point of focus? Are you blind? Not payng attention to your focus patch? My Epson 3800 printer can barely accomodate the M10-R prints at 300dpi. Wife watched me print at 22x17 with a disaproving look. Competing for non-existant walls already? (Wifey paints).
