Dates are year.month.day. Months are represented by numbers. The video transitions to one month per slide after mid-1864 due to the drawn-out nature of the conflict.
Note that there is an error: from June 1862 to late 1863 the Hui rebels besieged Xi'an (Koopinator is going to destroy me for this).

Like, imo, all three should be revered as some of the greatest mappers out there, Tigerstar being that he was the founder of mapping even if his maps are pretty shit, Ollie Bye, as he was the greatest mapper in the game before the arrival of Khey Pard and Jake Mapping to the scene, and is still largely on par with them, and Suomi, due to being the founder of mapping in its current form, a much better version of the mapping initially done by Tigerstar. At the same time, Yan Xishan is the greatest mapper on TH-cam at the moment. The production value of his videos is unparalleled by any other mapper.
Also, Nick HD Mapping, another one of my all time favorite mappers, has returned to the cause.

For those of you who haven't heard of this civil war, it was actually one of the deadliest civil war in the Chinese history, the causalities is between 20 million to 50 million. This civil war has severely weakened the whole empire, also another reason why the European powers could easily gained advantage on their attempts of colonization.

The Qing just couldn’t catch a break with internal and external threats
Yes, poor Qing dynasty just have too many problems to face. Qing was established by the Manchu guys, who is minority compared with Han Chinese (although in absolute number there are a lot of them), so they fear they would lose their power back to the Han. As a result, the Qing government was extremely conservetive to push reforms, and finnally collapsed in the modern revolutionary forces.
The map is just showing the sunset of the last Chinese dynasty.

It's amazing and utterly horrifying how little territory the Taiping controlled (as say, compared to the Revolt of the Three Feudatories) and yet they managed to start a war that killed so many millions of people.
Either way, good job, Kolchak!
In terms of land area the rebellion was not that big but they controlled some of the most heavily populated regions so their rebellion had far more people behind it than is immediately obvious.

People need to learn that large territories mean nothing. Most of the Chinese population live in relative (relative) proximity to the coast, and overall the core of the Chinese culture comes from that very eastern part of China. The rest (the westerner/central part, Manchuria in the north...) is secondary.
@@xenotyposIt’s true in southern China (south to Yangtze) that more costal area is more wealthy and important , but in the north,the whole Northern China plain also have huge population ,importance of culture, and food production, they didn’t concentrate at costal areas like southern, they speared across the plain, they only become secondary after the 80s when China reform the economic made the business and trading running more in costal. Taiping occupation of Southern China destroyed many wealthy southern provinces, especially Jiangxi and Anhui that are still poor today, other provinces like Zhejiang and Jiangsu also suffered but they’re costal, made them recover very well and become wealthy again.
You have to take into account that although they technically controlled most of China, the qing were fighting a guerilla war almost all over the country. Which is why the government was in exile in Manchuria during this period.
The reach of the heavenly Kingdom went far further than its borders. They would turn up at your village and burn it down for paying taxes to the qing, then the qing would loot and burn down your village for failing to fight off the heavenly Kingdom. You can imagine quickly how casualties could build up. Roaming armies each tearing China apart to try to destroy the other.
I really like your maps, they have a much more professional quality than Tigerstar's and other mappers.
I like them both. Sometimes when you have as many names and rivers it seems cluttered, but having the rivers and cities puts a lot of military decisions into context. You can’t have one without the other.

@@MegaTang1234 Yep, and to a certain extent, many advanced weapons that Invented during the American Civil War do help the Great Qing to defeat the rebellion.
For example, Gatling gun was used by Qing to defeat the Nian rebellion & muslim rebellion in Northwest.
Spencer repeating rifles were used by both Yettishahr Khanate(British aid) and Qing in Xinjiang.
After which time Qing Dynasty admired America very much

This rebellion was completely brutal. There is something a little bit terrifying and fascinating with the religious-inspired Chinese rebellions throughout history. It's a shame it isn't the focus of many movies, documentaries or talked about often (in the West for me at least.) Great job.

@@themercifulguard3971 It's not just the war culture..most dynasty changes involved massive natural disasters like floods or droughts..without a powerful government to aid the victims, they soon resulted in famine, which in turn brought insurgency, giving the dynasty a final blow...

@@affentaktik2810: I've heard claims of about 9.5 million victims in the Russian Civil War, though I don't have a good source on that. It's an enormous number but only a fraction of the death toll of the Taiping Rebellion.

Nice work. I had no idea the Taiping Rebellion was that extensive. Overlay their territorial control to a Chinese population density map, which would look similar in 1855 as it would today; a larger proportion of the Chinese population must have been under rebel control than the US population under the CSA.

@Sniper thats a huge simplification. a lot of this simplified idea of grouping people was introduced after communist china was established because they adopted soviet idea of ethnicity. but it was mostly wrong. and at ming and yuan dynasty, muslim were inhabited everywhere in china and widely adopted. the strong cohesion of hui identity was only enforced when muslim started be prosecuted in middle qing era.

I really appreciate this effort, and this is certainly the best map I've seen on the Taping. Good work. However, I am a historian of the Taiping period, and I noticed a few mistakes. Some big ones I noticed off the top of my head: 1) you show the Taiping occupying most of eastern Guangxi and southern Hunan in 1852-1853 much longer than they actually did. Qing forces followed close on the heels of Taiping as they marched north, retaking much of Guangxi as the moved into Hunan, and southern Hunan was lost before Wuhan was taken. 2)You show all of Zhejiang retaken by the Qing in January 1864, but most of Zhejiang north of Hangzhou (around Jiaxing) were held by the Taiping up to August although it was heavily contested. Nonetheless, this is a commendable effort as I understand the confusing, complex, and incomplete information available. I often get lost and confused about where certain players were at a certain time.

Until the leader of leftist Wang Jingwei negotiated with Chiang. After Wang betrayed leftists, many of social democrats and other moderate leftists in KMT was killed in Shanghai by Chiang in a millitary coup like Kristallnacht in Germany. Who survived obeyed Chiang or fled with CCP.
In the Ten marshalls of Mao, some of them used to be leftists in KMT. Including He Long and Peng Dehuai.

Guerrilla warfare theory during the time he led his little squad in Hunan mountains, and quickly became an important figure with leading his own CCP provincial government.
But he was neither leader of the party nor sole commander of their army until as late as 1935, although he played important part in the central milltary commitee as a brilliant commander and inspiring commissar. After he successfully planned and guided the long march and secured CCP's position in North-western China, after major defeat back to south before he came in charge, Mao's leading position finally consolidated. That was early 1936.

That right there is, in total, over 100 Million deaths, including from war-related causes like war induced famine and diseases. The provinces of Gansu, Shaanxi, Anhui and Jiangxi were in particular devastated. Gansu in particular lost 75% (!!!!) of its population during this period, and arguably hasn't yet recovered to this day.

After 天京事變 in 1856, 石達開 went to 安慶 in Anhui. Your map make it look like he went to Szechuan. In 1857 he mostly spent time in Jiangshi and 1858 mostly Hubei. In 1859 did he go to Guanshi which sort of matches your map again. And yes, he met his end in Szechuan in 1863

How is Joseon even Blue? It was a totally separate state that just happened to pay tribute.
Because the Chinese tributary system was weird. It was basically a semi-feudal system that acknowledges China as the "Emperor of the World", and by this time Joseon was really the only country left who actually abided by it both on surface and at home. It's like the relationship between HRE/ERE and the rest of Europe prior to Westphalia. Modern sovereign state concepts did not really become a thing in East Asia until the 1800s.
Personally, I think Joseon probably should have been a lighter blue because it was technically not part of the Imperial Realm. To be fair, Joseon at this time had a isolationist policy and when Western Countries tried to establish diplomatic relations, they tried to push it off claiming to be "a part of China" before China told Westerners they were an "independent state". But then, Joseons relationship was weird because it was almost like Tibet and Mongolia was to China, the latter of which China did claim as its territories but chose not to include Joseon for whatever reason.

at 6:36 of this video, Bai Yanhu starts in northwest Xinjiang province.
Bai Yanhu should be one of the Hui rebel (in Shaanxi and Gansu) leaders, who later fled into Xinjiang to link up with Yetteshahr Khanate.

The late 1861 map is interesting. I did not realize that the Taiping got so close to Sian. I thought it was the Nian that were operating into Shanshi from Henan that threatened Sian and not the Taiping. Of course Taiping and Nian were sort of allied at that time

Joseon was never a part of the Qing dynasty, but it was the most loyal tributary state, just like Vietnam and many others
That's why it was colored light blue.
That said, by this time Joseon was really the only kingdom that abided by the tributary system loyally. Vietnam claimed to be a "Kingdom" when discoursing with China and provided tribute, but at home they switch to the title "Emperor". This is in contrast with Joseon who claimed to be Kings both abroad and at home.

The Taiping Rebellion was the first modern ideological total war. (Started before the American Civil War.) All of society was put to the task of war. The Taiping armies drafted women as well.
Imperial China never recovered.
Some Taiping veterans joined Sun Yat-Sen's Revive China Society 30 years later (which eventually became the Kuomintang), and the Chinese Communist Party 60 years later. Many lived to see the fall of the Qing, weirdly without hardly any bloodshed, in 1912. Guess their rebellion had done the job already.

It's a miracle the Qing dynasty survived all of this revolt.
It's arguable they didn't. The rebellion severely weakened the Imperial government and made it more susceptible to later uprisings, eventually culminating in the Xinhai Revolution.
I don't agree with this map, you are showing Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh as part of Qing but it was under British Raj. Also you are showing some more disputed territories as part of Qing.

I actualy liked your video but i couldn't understand why after a war with Qing, they helped them to fought the rebels.
The West only cared about trade. When the Qing tried to repeal the unfair trade treaties the West imposed on them, the West invaded and forced them to keep the treaties.
Shanghai was the largest western settlement in China and a major trade centre. When it seemed like the Taipings might take Shanghai, the West was afraid about what might happen to Shanghai if it was ruled by the Taipings. So they helped the Qing defeat the Taipings.

Also, it is interesting and also sad to see that every major religion that has spread into China has created at least one or two massive rebellions. The Christian Taiping rebellion killed 30-80 million people. The Muslim Dungan revolt killed around 20 million in northwest China, and the various Zoroastrian and Buddhist rebellions in early Chinese history have also caused millions of deaths.
As per my knowledge, your mapping of Russian far east is wrong. Could you provide any references for the documents you have used to map the Manchuria region before 1855? Could you please elaborate on your interpretation of Aigun agreement which I assume you are using to map a border change.
