How to Re-Cap Vintage National HRO-5TA1 Tube Ham Radio Receiver Beginning to end

  • Acquired from a fellow Ham operator. He purchased this unit on ebay. When it arrived, operation was very poor. He sent it to me for evaluation. A true classic in need of restoration. Very time consuming process. Lots of room to work in. The beauty of old tube radios. Great to see it playing again. Hopefully someone would like to add it to their collection. If you are interested in it, drop me a line.

What are a few PCBs amongst friends? 😳 Another fine recap by D-Lab. Great to see a D-Lab video after a long week of work.

I just picked one of these up with 4 coil packs, crystal oscillator and a regulated tube power supply. It needs a recap but in very nice condition similar to this one. Thanks for the video im inspired.

Thanks Terry, I have a 5TA1 in the repair queue waiting for it's turn on the bench. You've inspired me.

Wow! The underside was so pristine, I would be tempted to leave it alone, and keep it as a superb example of original National construction.

I agree, but it could not be powered or used in that state, just eye candy

The Nationals were meant to be used, so if you ever get one, use it! The pleasure of each model receiver is to be experienced up close, not on a shelf in a display.

The tuning knob on HROs is a completely unique and very clever design. With those windows in the knob and the way they switch, you have an tuning scale like 6 feet long.

Try holding down one button on your multimeter while turning it on. I have a meter and one of the buttons silences it. It's not marked on the meter, but worth a shot!

Bathtub caps are quite reliable. They drift but rarely fail catastrophically. I usually test them and keep them if possible. If one is bad, I carefully cut them open, evacuate them and stuff them with new caps so the original look is retained. In fact, i often have to locate NOS bathtubs to replace ones that were shotgunned.
BTW, the PCB will only hurt you if you eat it or smoke it. Just make sure you dispose of them according to local laws.

Hey Terry. I've been watching you for a few years. Yes, I've been virtually silent all this time. I am interested in obtaining a Ham transciever as a newbie (in preparation for a license) what unit(s) would you recommend looking for. Bare in mind I repair tube amps and radios. I've been looking at Heathkit but I'm not sure which model I should consider. Like the idea of the SB-100. Could you let me know which one you would recommend?

Hi Philip, If you want the best Heathkit look at the SB-102. I have one & love it, easy to work on

Did you wind up changing out that big roasted resistor? Given the age of the unit, it's almost a given that at least a few of those ancient "roundies" are seriously out of tolerance by now.

Do you pay attention to the outside foil end of the new caps? Isn't it important to be sure to place the foil end of the cap to the lower impedance end of the circuit it's sitting in?
Are those Illinois Capacitor brand cap?

Grade receivers once you figure out how to read the planetary drive knob you could almost figure out what frequency you are listening to. Guess that's why the WW-II military stations always had the LM frequency meters.

I'm thinking that empty tube pin might have been used as a terminal strip connection in a different revision. That might explain why they have a voltage call-out.

Terry, you must have consumed too much wine! It ended too quickly!
I noticed on the enclosure that the coil sets are plugged into, that between a couple of alignment holes there was a red "X" on it. What was that for?
I love that radio. It is beautiful!
The metal "can" that the shaft from the tuning knob goes into...that must be some sort of gearing system, right? I was hoping that you would open that up so we could see how the gearing works.
It looks so much better with the new capacitors installed. Oh, did you actually replace that resistor? If so, what did you replace it with?

    • @jeffcotton526
      @jeffcotton526 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

He did replace that "burnt" resistor... the carbon film one with a ceramic resistor. At the 27:54 time mark you'll see the change from that old carbon resistor to the shiny ceramic wire wound resistor above the orange drop cap.

    Hi Terry,
Do you have a death wish?
I see that you are not acting safe with your meter.
Your left hand rests on the chassis and your right hand measures.
If you accidentally hit a power source with your right hand, you're done. Please work safely. I would like to enjoy more of your beautiful you tube contributions in the future.
    Regards, Ton

Translation: I thought that I would never see HRO again. We still had Lnendlizovskie receivers in the North ... and this one ... HYCH ER Oh ... It was just ... When there was no passage, HRO rescued. It's a pity then, by order, they drowned everything .... the tractor sledges with the equipment were taken out on the ice and sank in the Kara Sea .... I really snuck one receiver and didn't see the political officer ..... This HRO was tuned according to the ,, Graph ,, visible below

You've paid no attention to the banding on the old caps and which way round to wire the new ones. You might be lucky with some, but this will introduce lots of unnecessary pick up by these caps.
