my grandpa used to have one of these trucks, he drove it until it had almost 300k miles on it, clutch was almost gone, and the whole body was rusted out. he still says it was his favorite truck ever, absolute monster of a machine
Correct Sir, 3.0L 3VZ-E V6 w/ 145 hp My 1986 4 runner had the 22RE 2.4L 4 cylinder w/112 hp. There was also the very rare 22RTE turbo 4 cylinder w/135 hp (I wanted one soooo bad!!)
Still have my '88 I ordered new. Light Blue Metallic. NEVER had an issue with the back window frozen shut. V6 was one of the worst engines Toyota ever built. Mine is the 5 speed 22RE at 111,000 miles it drives like new. Value on these continue to rise. Hagerty value guide has mine valued at 40K. 113HP my favorite vehicle love driving it. It turns heads at car shows. 36 years later still in love with it.
@@calebpattillo6732 Were these first 1 or 2 years of the 3.0 3vze v6 also prone to head gasket issues? Thought I had heard that like 1990 was when the head gasket material had to quickly be changed to no longer have asbestos, and that hasty design change (w/o enough testing R&D) is what resulted in all the HG problems. Either way, I've got 2 pickup 4x4s and 1 4Runner, all w/ the 22re so I'm a-ok.
A quick google search of "Graeme Fletcher" seems to show he's still alive. Also, I've got an '87 non-SR5 manual that I've had for less than 2 years now. I love it! Swapped in an SR5 gauge cluster to get a tachometer. Would be extra sweet if if was one of the rare turbo 4Runners, but I've yet to see one in-person. Great vehicles.

I used to get around 21-22 with my 86 but it was a 4 cyl. I believe the truck on here is the gas guzzling, underpowered 3.0 V6.

it’s actually an i4. specially the 22re. insanely reliable. i have well over 200k on mine. the v6 had head gasket problems but still a decent motor

My dad had one of these shitboxes for many years. My childhood is traumatised by this cars. I will never own a 4wd ever.
Sorry you feel that way. For the era, these were about the best you could get. SUVs have come a long way since then.
