This is a demonstration of something that is already known to be true. It's just a demonstration, not a proof of concept. We all prefer the way we look in mirrors better than what we look in photographs, because we simply spend more time looking at ourselves in mirrors than in photographs, that it becomes the norm for us even though we are looking at the mirror image of ourselves every time we look in a mirror! Plus most selfie cameras in our phones also mirror the image they shoot on purpose so that we look better in them! If you don't believe me try this... Take a selfie with your front camera and take the same selfie with your back camera in your smartphone, and the one will be the mirrored version of the other! :O
Wow Charlie sent me here and I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEE what you guys are doing! I'm a hugeeeeee lover of science, so hearing you explain things this way is REALLY interesting! I will definitely be sticking around to see the rest of your videos :)
I think its really cute how one partner knows which picture is "normal" to how they see the other by recognizing the way they smile or look or whatever. Shows they pay attention:)
It would be interesting to test the 40% who chose the normal image of themselves further. Maybe a lot of them spend a lot of time on Facebook, or in another way see photos of themselves more often than the 60%... or at least that's a hypothesis worth testing, I think! This is super intriguing!
Then, literally speaking, you should consider becoming a Surgeon if you want to help people stay alive. If the dead do not trouble you, also consider becoming a Forensic Examiner/Pathologist/Anthropologist. I hope this helps, but if it didn't, don't use "literally" when you mean "figuratively" next time.
We watched one of these videos in my AP Psych class today, and they were intriguing (plus, I saw Charlie) so I decided to look them up. It's now almost 1 AM. I need sleep!
60 percent chose the mirrored image, and one of those changed his mind after first picking the normal image, so the theory is let's say...50 percent. case proven. not
As with any scientific theory, one study does not prove or disprove the theory, merely adding evidence in support or to the contrary. The sample size (10) was very small, so the mirrored image case has weak support here with any one person eliminating the majority, but the normal image case has strong support with all but one. This is why peer review every theory and study and meta-analysis of all studies done on a topic are so important. I may be mistaken, though I believe the scientific support for climate change is 97% of studies. This number is overwhelming, though the other 3% are also incredibly important for the purpose of validating scientific theories. Back to you, Charlie.
You are in good company, Stephanie. Although Charlie's percentage share of the TH-cam fandom has waned in recent years, many people find him anywhere from good-looking to the sexiest TH-camr of all time, with many falling into the "Charlie is attractive" or "Charlie is hot" categories.
Attractiveness is subjective and entirely dependent on what the other person perceives them to be, not all this media nonsense. Not everyone finds the likes of Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Lawrence attractive and they've all been dolled up anyway so its not really the true them and anyone dolled up is going to look really good anyway!. These couples have partners who love them for them and that's the most attractive beautiful thing in the world. Just work to be your best self and the right people will come into your life and stay.
They allowed this video to be in 720p and 3D, for all those who liked the original Charlie I can agree. He is so much better real but also better in 3D!
They stated one of the reasons for a subject favouring the non-mirrored picture of themself could be down to facial symmetry. I have another idea: It could be that those subjects are accustomed to seeing photographs of themselves.
If the more we see something the more we like it, shouldn't couples then start becoming MORE attracted to their partner over time? Instead the opposite happens like ... " I'm sick of looking at you. Get out of my face and Oh yeah that new intern is looking MIGHTY FINE"!
the hypothesis is so true! i feel like with unique looking people at first i think their sorta ugly but after a while you get used to the way they look, and they start to look better? if that makes any sense
An interesting thought, maybe when people were looking at the photos of themselves, the reason that the preference was so much closer to 50/50 was because they happen to see lots of photos of themselves (which is what their partner would see) as well as mirror images, whereas they wouldn't see their partners in mirrors as much as they would see them face to face or in photos.
interesting. I guess when some people can't stand to see themselves in photos, it might be because they're particularly sensitive to the change when it's mirrored.
Well done, a nice simplification of facial attraction from a symmetrical standpoint and repeated exposure. Why no mention of testosterone or estrogen in regards to masculine or feminine features?
I support the theory. Because nowadays you may see yourself in a picture or in a video too, not only in the mirror. So you do not see only your reverse image.
If you want to see what you actually look like, take a slefie, and then look in the mirror, both will be at different angles. The selfie, is how other people see you. You must actually take the picture for it to work, don't just look with the camera otherwise it will look the same as the mirror.
+Cloud Strife actually no, you see yourself from a 2point's perspective, while pictures are taken from a 1points perspective, and other people see from a 2 point's perspective too. That's why we often 'don't look like ourselves' in pictures.
I didn't like the way that the picture looked when the guy changed it to make charlie's face more symetrical. For some reason I just thought it looked really.... different
I think that imperfections are what make people them. Its what makes them attractive. For example, Charlies mole and spots are what makes him who he is in a way. When they got rid of them, it just didn't look like him. He is attractive just the way he is. :)
Not true. Say that your part is on the left side, so on the mirrored image it is on the right. The image you see in the mirror has the part on your left, but it is on the mirror's right. Therefore, the flipped image is what you see in the mirror.
that mirrored image and normal image thing is such a revelation. I tried flipping my photos and holy shiiiiiit I LOOK SO DIFFERENT! So I'm like, omg... is that how I really look like in real life? haha...
The people who liked the normal pics were both girls, which makes them statistically more likely to pay attention to their photographs. With digital photos being more available, mirrored images may not stay the most familiar.
it does not work like that, you get a type of body by your genes, he could have six pack and good formed muscles but never obtain that extreme body mass as the double
ovt1998 extreme? that is not even close to extreme lol. An average man can attain that size from just 1 year of proper diet and exercise without steroids. I estimate It would take the skinny guy in the video 2 or 3 years of doing the same. This is because it seems he has poor genetics in the muscle gaining department. The body of the more muscular man in the video doesn't even come close to what the average human body is capable of on an elite natural body building level. You have no idea what extreme is.
that extreme with a year of exercise that is not possible (unless you use steroids ) and fuck off i know what i am talking about, am using the extreme word without cheating, only natural exercise
ovt1998 Ok you're right, the average man can't get that body in one year. But saying that the skinny guy can't ever get that body without steroids is just ludicrous. It sometimes takes people a long time but sometimes you don't know how well your body can gain muscle if you have never worked out before. I maintain that if you have good genetics(not even god tier just good) you can get the more muscular mans body in one year.
i dont remember the name but is a great video that explains this stuff, is genetic no every human being can make muscle mass. is ludicrous what you can find in internet
I like how the one girl says "That one, because in the other one, his head looks crooked, and he doesn't crook his head like that." The little things you notice about people. It's sweet. =)
With 10 people, 60% isn't all that significant.... Of course, getting the resources for thousands of participants is difficult, but I think this is a very interesting way to better our understand of how we perceive ourselves and the psychology of self awareness.
@kors189 Why do you think those words sound so alike? It's because there IS a correlation between attraction and attractive. You're attracted to people because of a lot of things, but traits tend to play a large role. I'm not saying this is how absolutely everyone is wired, but these are experiments, and experiments tend to show the tendencies of the majority of people. To many rules there are exceptions, and, who knows, you could be one of the exceptions.
That's a natural reaction......Your pupil dialates because it was brighter after they opened their eyes. So in the dark you pupil is bigger to let more light in so you can see and in bright light it's smaller cause there's enough light. Like when you turn on/off the light, you go blind for a second because your eyes are adjusting to the amount light.
Surely given the amount of time people spend looking at their selfies, the idea that we see a mirrored image more doesn't hold. With increase in Zoom /Skype, we're also not always seeing a mirrored image.
I wish we could all be books or small articles that can be opened instantly out of air. There, you would read the description and not see who the person is like. We won't know the gender, ethnicity, intellect or anything else if we have the curiosity to read a little more. Plus, how can you copy another book and make it perfect, We would all be imperfectly perfect!
I wonder what the first part of the study would be like with actors or especially video bloggers, who are used to staring at their face in the non mirror image way while editing their videos or watching their work. I also wonder if the result was at all affected by whether or not the participant is used to seeing themselves in lots of pictures v. someone who doesn't have their picture taken very often.
My question is do we look for our partners to have a symmetrical face? When we are mingling do we look for other people that look like celebrities or are we so worried about ourselves we don't see as many flaws in another person?
60% is a really weak corrilation considering the sample size as this meas that it was one answer off being uncorrilated (as in 50/50 in a binomial problem). bad use of stats to try and prove a point. the other point seems valid though
the mere exposure hypothesis reinforces all the Charlie comments on here- Charlie's fans, who have repeated exposure to his face- like him that way (with the mole and beautiful scrawny body) but someone that had never seen Charlie before, would probably prefer the edited Charlie :)
That last guy was such a smoothie by saying the real photo looked better, which was a good thing as that's how she actually looks. Bravo, my man!
6 out of 10 people and she says it confirms the theory?
The sample size is very small
they couldn't tell they were mirrored images?
Everything is fake. Fake love .
@@gnbilios tears
Not everyone knows about photoshop and mirrored images...
So you base your 60% on a sample size of less than 10?? LOL

Take a selfie with your front camera and take the same selfie with your back camera in your smartphone, and the one will be the mirrored version of the other! :O
all around me are familiar faces
worn out places
worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere
Going nowhere
lmao that photoshop job, they didn't even bother adjusting their skin tones XD XD XD XD XD
Charlie doesn't need photoshop
I would definitely notice that it was the same image mirrored. the lighting and pose were identical, so obv!
Lol
Wow Charlie sent me here and I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEE what you guys are doing! I'm a hugeeeeee lover of science, so hearing you explain things this way is REALLY interesting! I will definitely be sticking around to see the rest of your videos :)
I think its really cute how one partner knows which picture is "normal" to how they see the other by recognizing the way they smile or look or whatever. Shows they pay attention:)
does the intro really have to be a minute long?
It would be interesting to test the 40% who chose the normal image of themselves further. Maybe a lot of them spend a lot of time on Facebook, or in another way see photos of themselves more often than the 60%... or at least that's a hypothesis worth testing, I think!
This is super intriguing!
I prefer to see how a person looks on the inside, literally speaking of course.
What if kaiok did mean to say "literally", but doesn't want to help people or look at already dead bodies?
Agreed. I also wish people would show their true selves, by peeling off their skin.
Take it off, baby. Take it _ALL_ off.
I am sooo happy that finally something like that is happening . Hope some people will watch and learn
Correction: Psuedo-science of attraction.
I've always liked my reflection, but never pictures of me, and I never knew why until I watched this. It's so interesting!
When we see ourselves, we can only see the mirrored image. That's how we appear on a reflective image.
Why does everything seem so much more scientific and entertaining when British people do science shows? Lol. Very interesting show! I
If anyone cares (you probably don't), the music that starts at 7:54 is called "Citysurf" or "Uptown"
(former is just music, latter has sirens)
We watched one of these videos in my AP Psych class today, and they were intriguing (plus, I saw Charlie) so I decided to look them up. It's now almost 1 AM. I need sleep!
I enjoy that Charlie doesn't really sound like he's reciting lines, because he's using his vlog voice. You know the one.
Kat talks about a fals image of beatuy which I think is troubling. But she still wears a barbie shirt...
it's amazing how much culture has an impact on the way people act and judge.
That couples test was really amazing to see! And I think Charlie looked better pre-shopped., looking forward to the next vid!
60 percent chose the mirrored image, and one of those changed his mind after first picking the normal image, so the theory is let's say...50 percent. case proven. not

Is it weird that I find Charlie Super Hot!! in the real non-changed way
You are in good company, Stephanie. Although Charlie's percentage share of the TH-cam fandom has waned in recent years, many people find him anywhere from good-looking to the sexiest TH-camr of all time, with many falling into the "Charlie is attractive" or "Charlie is hot" categories.

#Truth
"Reality is beauty" amazing line.
This was interesting,
I'd more prefer normal Charlie over "buff" Charlie though, so the science holds true! :D
Awww, Charlie. What a shock to see him in this video. That was fascinating indeed.
All of the comments about "I like Charlie better the way he is" totally prove this video's point about familiarity being what we like.
They allowed this video to be in 720p and 3D, for all those who liked the original Charlie I can agree. He is so much better real but also better in 3D!
WHY ARE THERE ONLY 8 VIDEOS? I WANT MORE!
This would be a legit psychology class tutorial vid
I have to say.. I burst out laughing when Charlie took his shirt off. He's such an adorably scrawny kid.
that is why I look at the double version of my mirror now to see what others see as well
i couldnt stop giggling when Charlie took off his shirt. hes so adorable.
Many people see photos of themselves more than their face in a mirror.
Those many people should get off of instagram and visit a local bathroom more often :)
"More attitude Charlie!"
*Constipated face*
I LOVE HIM!!!!
They stated one of the reasons for a subject favouring the non-mirrored picture of themself could be down to facial symmetry. I have another idea: It could be that those subjects are accustomed to seeing photographs of themselves.
Charlie's 'attitude' is possibly the cutest thing I have ever seen.
"I think because you have a more symmetrical face it's harder to pick which one" bang on.
If the more we see something the more we like it, shouldn't couples then start becoming MORE attracted to their partner over time? Instead the opposite happens like ... " I'm sick of looking at you. Get out of my face and Oh yeah that new intern is looking MIGHTY FINE"!
L
I just meant that when the photographer asks for 'attitude' at 8.21 his expression is really cute.
Do you think some of the cases where the mere hypotheses failed was due to left handed vs right handed test subjects?
60 people found out they were ugly
i love watching this; science of attraction; a very innovative name and amazingly inspiring as well
Real smiles are asymmetrical, on the left side. Is cus when you are truly happy, the right side of your brain lights up so the left corner off you
I have to say, I found this because of Charlie, but this is actually really fascinating. I want to try this with myself.
the hypothesis is so true! i feel like with unique looking people at first i think their sorta ugly but after a while you get used to the way they look, and they start to look better? if that makes any sense

This reminds me a lot of the Uglies series by Scott Westerfield. Like crazy similar
No one realized they were looking at an identical (but reversed) photo of themselves?
Very interesting subject well presented.
interesting. I guess when some people can't stand to see themselves in photos, it might be because they're particularly sensitive to the change when it's mirrored.
this was really really interesting, i'm looking forward to the next video

+Go Hard Or Go Home your comment made me sigh in relief lmao
Boy me tho 😂 I think look quite good on rhe mirror but then I take a selfie out of nowhere and be like "wtf"
very interesting.
why aren't we using video screens to display an un-reversed image of ourselves instead of a mirror yet?!
I didn't like the way that the picture looked when the guy changed it to make charlie's face more symetrical. For some reason I just thought it looked really.... different

I completely understand the mirror thing. I don't like myself as much when I am not mirrored.
How do they not notice the picture is only flipped?
Thanks for telling me that 15/20 is 75% because I never would have worked that out by myself
The p-value is something like 0.35. Hardly significant.
Needs a bigger sample size in order for any results!
I understand removing blemishes on the face, but making the face more symmetrical by duplicating features, I find wrong...
charlieissocoollike is a youtuber and is also in the Chameleon Circuit band
i didnt even know charlie was in here but im happy he is
really educative series..nyc workk
I nearly fainted when he took his shirt off. Oh Charlie!
Why is this series so addicting?! I need sleep! /:
OMG Charlie on "Science of Attraction"!!!! oO soo cool!!!
The people who liked the normal pics were both girls, which makes them statistically more likely to pay attention to their photographs.

I think about this so often
I liked Charlie more before all the changes.
The mole and red spots make him what he is ;)
Also, how did Charlie end up in a show with Derren Brown??
With 10 people, 60% isn't all that significant.... Of course, getting the resources for thousands of participants is difficult, but I think this is a very interesting way to better our understand of how we perceive ourselves and the psychology of self awareness.
i came here video to watch this and when i saw charlie i was so excited

If someone takes a photo and says "fantastic" afterwards I can't help but think of Dead Rising.
What is the P value for that 60% statistic you guys throw out there?
That's a natural reaction......Your pupil dialates because it was brighter after they opened their eyes. So in the dark you pupil is bigger to let more light in so you can see and in bright light it's smaller cause there's enough light. Isn't charlie also the guy from fear and faith who was on the placebo pills?
What is up with them choosing the mirror image version :/
how do they not see the photos are mirrored??
Surely given the amount of time people spend looking at their selfies, the idea that we see a mirrored image more doesn't hold. With increase in Zoom /Skype, we're also not always seeing a mirrored image.
This is really interesting. I think everyone would like themselves better if the media was more raw, and non-airbrushed.
that buff image of charlie will be in my nightmares forever... O.O
@JoshoewaGillespie Yeah you right, that's one thing I see too and the head is not propotional to the body
I wish we could all be books or small articles that can be opened instantly out of air. There, you would read the description and not see who the person is like. oh how i love charlie i only watched this for him
I wonder what the first part of the study would be like with actors or especially video bloggers, who are used to staring at their face in the non mirror image way while editing their videos or watching their work. I also wonder if the result was at all affected by whether or not the participant is used to seeing themselves in lots of pictures v. someone who doesn't have their picture taken very often.
I hate it when he says that there is millions of people and not hard to find that someone.. well I have been waiting all my life for him!
How could they not* know the pictures were identical?
My question is do we look for our partners to have a symmetrical face? When we are mingling do we look for other people that look like celebrities or are we so worried about ourselves we don't see as many flaws in another person?
that male model double Tom is so cute!!! Whats his full name? i wanna see more of his model work
60% is a really weak corrilation considering the sample size as this meas that it was one answer off being uncorrilated (as in 50/50 in a binomial problem). bad use of stats to try and prove a point. the other point seems valid though
the mere exposure hypothesis reinforces all the Charlie comments on here- Charlie's fans, who have repeated exposure to his face- like him that way (with the mole and beautiful scrawny body) but someone that had never seen Charlie before, would probably prefer the edited Charlie :)
