The look on your face when Geoff started singing about the fight, and the little "Oooh" just made my week! It was too cute! I've been watching people react to Richard Goodall on America's Got Talent all week, which always chokes me up, it's so stunning. Seriously. You should check it out, just for yourself, if not to react to. I haven't seen a single reactor NOT get misty eyed watching it, it's so inspiring! 💙
Geoff Castellucci has a voice that melts flesh from bones. You aren’t immune with eyes closed.
This song was recorded by Jim Croce in 1972 (he followed it up with Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown). The original, despite being about a deadly fight in a 42nd Street pool hall in NYC, was very bright and bouncy, so Geoff "darkened" it down a little. This was filmed by Geoff and Kathy with at "a random studio in Orlando" as the PattyCake Production's studio was busy. This video was fueled by peanut butter and jam sandwiches.
I know it's not for a reaction but don't miss out on his short for pride month. It's a lovely version of the rainbow connection.
That skat is in the original, only several times and not at the end. This is a Jim Croce song from the early '70s. You MIGHT know his song "Time in a Bottle". I think that is probably his best known one. He died way too young. Just a year after this came out. Croce played this with a much heavier emphasis on the acoustic guitar (and 'slightly' higher voice, but not a lot). His version was more 'boppy' and bouncy. Geoff introduced a real 'groove' to it and a lot more testosterone, by pulling back on the guitar and adding the Stomps and Claps. He said he didn't think the original felt as much like a 'fight' song as it should. Well, now it sure does!
And I love how he gave 'Slim' a higher register. I feel it kind of makes him seem a bit younger, smaller and a bit naive. Croce sang it all like a story he was telling, and you couldn't even be sure he had witnessed the event. Geoff gave us a whole separate voice for Slim and the feeling that the crowd in the Pool Hall underestimated him with that bit about 'Everybody knows Jack', trying to warn him off. This gives me the understanding as to how Slim won. Jim didn't take him seriously. With the original, not everyone even noticed that Slim won the fight. There was an extra spoken line at the end that made it clearer.
And I love that the visuals echo "16 Tons" with the singlet and the dark background. I feel these Geoffs are the guys from that song, only they have run to the Dark Side.
I hope your recovery from the surgery is going well. No slacking on your rehab!
Geoff and family adopted Tommy in April. He is a big sweetheart. But he's attached to Geoff. Follows him everywhere in the house.
Huldra Draco posted a short of Geoff walking him.
You can tell that Geoff has been working to be sure the clones are not all just moving like mirror images. It can't be easy.
Geoff brought the "fight" vibe to this song. He felt that the original was too boppy for the theme of the song.
We love our E1s. Regardless geoff is still our king when it comes to this. The G1 to E1 is so clean and I love this ending bit. It’s so good
Thank you, DJ, for another great reaction & video.
I love Jim Croce's songs so much, and Geoff does it so much justice! If he ever does Time in a Bottle, I'm done for.
That makes two of us 😉
Me, too! Friends performed Time In A Bottle at our wedding.
Or Operator. Doomed. I’d be doomed.
This was one of my dad's favorite songs. He's dyslexia and can't read well, so he'd put on a "story song" like this, 16 Tons, Big Bad John, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, anything by Johnnie Cash, and those were my bedtime stories.
Great reaction. Geoff as always does so well. That said, please do yourself a favor and listen to the original. Jim Croce was such a talent back in the day. Storytelling, music, singing, he nailed it all!!
This was so perfect for him. I love it when he tells a story. And boy can you tell he's been working out. *sigh If you think this is bonkers you'll flip out over VP's next release. It's on Patreon now.
At the Patreon premiere, we said you were going to need your fan. 😂
Geoff definitely told the story of the lyrics better, imo. As many times as I'd heard Jim Croce in the original, I didn't get that Jim lost the fight. Definitely got it in this rendition.
Jim Croce RIP. Taken from this earth way too soon. Oh yeah, you need to react to the Don't Mess Around With Jim, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, and Time In A Bottle.
The casual and comedic way you said go to hell made me laugh so hard lol apparently VoicePlay have a hell of a song coming up. I'm talking we might have another Hoist The Colours reaction out of it. And you want to talk about snack time, give his I'm On Fire short a listen...something about Geoff saying the line "hey little girl is your daddy home" oh you will drop to your knees, bow to the East and thank the gods for Mr. Geoff ❤
I knew this song from my childhood and love it. I tend to sing along when I hear songs I know. One of my cats must have a crush on Geoff because she hisses at me if I sing a single note of this version. 😻
Geoff knew exactly what to do with this song. Jim Croce who was a 1966 - 73 great folksinger one that began in high school for me and unfortunately this fellow and his guitarist were killed on way to or from a concert. We lost a really wonderful singer and some fabulous songs like Operator and Time in a Bottle (my favorite of his). His son actually goes on stage and plays and sings his dad's songs.
I love your reactions and this one didn't disappoint. Glad you are feeling a little better.
Not a song I knew before but I love this song from Geoff, the man is an absolute star...and his outro always makes me smile because he is SO sweet.
Thank you DJ for this reaction, great choice from the poll winner!
I am so glad you got to this one. I had to see how the low notes hit you.
This song was a hit for Jim Croce in 1972. Jim did that scatting after each chorus. And Geoff held “Slim” at the end even lower and longer than “around” that you talked about.
Great reaction, thank you!!❤❤
Recover well a d soon! ❤
aw, you are a sexy little malfunctioning robot, no worries. Hope you are recovering quickly and completely.
8:52 and just when you think that’s low he takes it even lower for “with slim”. 🤯
Dragon man strikes again!
I do recommend checking out the Jim Croce version; it stands up to the comparison. And it is what you would call a "bop", I think.
You might not wanna mess around with jim, but i would sure as hell mess around with geoff 👀🤣💜🦌
Someone took a picture of him from this video which is just one Geoff with his arms crossed and i captioned it (boss music, yeah that’s it)
Thanks DJ 😊
You need to check out Jim Croce, the writer and original recorder as well as the rest of Croce's catalog. He died way too young.
A great cover of an iconic Jim Croce song from the 70s. Been wishing one of my favorite a cappella groups would do some Croce. Didn't expect it to be a one person group. You should dig into Jim Croce. This one; Bad, Bad Leroy Brown; Operator; Time in a Bottle; I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song and many, many more. An amazing singer/songwriter gone too soon.
Love the reaction!!!❤ Been waiting for this one. I needed it. Even when I am down lately I go back and watch past reactions to smile. But as always thank you for my smile today.
❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you Dj !!!
great reaction as always ❤
I've been waiting on this!
Loved this! So much fun!
dj. geoff is just a dragon. and then also btw you need to react to epic the musical one day
Maybe it's not a solo maybe it's Geoff and his brothers like quintuplets lmao
You have heard it DJ. In Stranger Things.
🦌❤❤❤🦌
ok, I'm in love with all of your reactions.... could you put "Unshaken" done by Geoff, Jeff, Jeoff, and Daryl on your list?... p.s..... you WILL be shaken... just to warn
You need to listen to Jim Croce. Good music
This is a Jim croche song listen to that version it’s faster and has guitar .
Ah, but the big question is, black or white singlets? (They have a less than nice other name in the states.) I personally like the former, It makes his eyes (all ten of them!) look bigger! Fantastic reaction, as usual!💙
Any choir singer will tell you that those scat type things always start like an old sputtering engine. Which syllables, what rythm, oh that was the long note oops. And then you repeat and repeat and finally it all of a sudden clicks and now your jamming like it's the most natural thing to do. 🤷
