- I am a novice gardener and wanted to build raised garden beds (DIY ) for my backyard. Last year I made hanging garden containers for the fence, but this year, I wanted to try my hand at something larger: raised garden beds a little smaller than 4x8. Here is how I built my raised garden beds using cedar wood.

Rub the threads of the screws on a bar of soap and they'll go in much easier and with less chance of splitting the boards. And don't over tighten them.
I use half the size fencing and then place bird netting over that way I can harvest as is and no need to take frencing off. My friend on the other hand likes hers taller and just ties the ends together with twine or twisty ties that way she has access ;) great job!

Great video, very easy for anyone to do. FYI, for those who don't have a miter saw, Home Depot will cut the wood for you at no extra charge. I do recommend if you can afford $40, a jigsaw is a big plus to have.

Beware! Gardening is addictive! Delightful to watch and be inspired, as I've been thinking about adding raised beds to our yard. Thank you! Question.....What was your "fencing" made of? In the video it looked like plastic mesh, but it may have been the lighting. Are you happy with it....does it keep out the rabbits?
Yes, it is addicting! It's rewarding to see the fruits of your labor. I was so proud to see my ferns growing! :) As for the fencing, it's metal. The garden centers all have metal fencing, some taller than others, and difference gauges (thickness) of the metal. I'll be sure to look up which one I bought and include that in the materials list!

Thank you, Dee! I'm glad, too! There are days when I get lazy and just want to work on a project without having to film, but the urge to share is much more powerful than the urge to be lazy! LOL :)
these are great, I would suggest if you have a lot of moles/gophers around adding chicken wire fencing or similar very small metal grid fencing underneath. Yes, they can come above ground and get into your garden anyway, but that is a very different experience from them building tunnels into your garden where they are in there constantly stealing all your precious goodies.
First time gardener here. I put together 3 galvanized raised beds and did exactly that with small holed hardware cloth and held it down with long 5 or 6” “ staples”. That worked well. Now finding I have to battle bunnies as they are eating my lettuce! I need something simple for a fence that I can put together and handle.
Probably have to staple the bottom of your garden because bunny rabbits can still get in. Had a one like this. I took it down. Wishing I still had it. Might make one again. But I need one that I can stand and garden. Great job 👍. I could have benefited from your video 😊

You go girl! You are such a hard worker! I love your projects. I guess you should check out mixing some fertilizer in a watering pail and feed your new babies pretty soon. After that, probably once a month. They should grow really well in a raised garden because their roots will be able to spread very easily as opposed to being planted int the hard, clay soil we have in Maryland. I'm glad you decided to film this. I look forward to the growing updates!

I would fertilize the ferns, too. They may need a different kind of fertilizer than the veggies--possibly. You just need to read the container to see which type of fertilizer will be best. There are three numbers that are listed on each container/bag. These three numbers represent the primary nutrients (nitrogen(N) - phosphorus(P) - potassium(K)). So if your container says 10-10-10 that means it contains 10% each of N, P, K. It can be a little tricky/confusing so I would read the labels carefully. The containers will hopefully list the types of plants that will benefit from that particular fertilizer. Hope that helps!
j ob!! I have three raised beds and still a dozen or so pots, bags etc. to plant lots more. Don't forget to fertilize!!!

Thrift Diving - - Hey girl! Awesome job! The kiddos are such cuties; so sweet of them to help 😊 (at least for awhile! Lol). And seriously awesome for someone who's "not" a gardener - - we're all impressed! And good job for sticking with it till the very end - - hauling soil is no small task! 💪💪💪
For fertilizing - - Look up videos on how to make *compost tea*! Soooo easy and cheap - - can ask for an empty 5 gallon pickle bucket free from Jimmy John's (you want the previous occupant(s) of the bucket to be edible, not toxic chemicals, paint, etc), and an inexpensive fish tank aerator (~$5, Walmart, etc) - - and soooo much healthier for plants than the toxic stuff out there.
Dilute it 1:10 or even 1:20 with chlorine-free water (can use a 45 liter-per-minute aerator for a couple hours, or let it sit open to air x24 hrs to evaporate out the chlorine, so it won't harm plants or the beneficial bacteria you're looking to cultivate). Then apply generously to greens for their entire growing season, or early on for fruiting plants when young/pre-fruit stage (for tomatoes, peppers, etc).
The nitrogen helps the greens and foliage really thrive (but either shift your mix away from nitrogen or stop when fruit is going to be arriving, so the plant will stop putting energy into greens and shift its energy to the fruit). Use compost tea within 24 hours (don't store it; the beneficial bacteria will keep multiplying & can get icky).
There are also videos on how to do fast compost (with which to make your compost tea) with just green (fresh) & brown (dried) grass clippings if you don't have a ton of other plant-based🌿 food scraps readily available.
Sorry this got long lol. I get so excited about growing things, and it's so great to learn & sharenew tips on helping them do well!

Hi, Never had raised bed gardens for my veggies gardens until last summer. Built 3 with 8' long 4" X 4" cedar posts from Home Depot. Instead of just screws, used corner metal joining brackets. Cut 2 posts in 1/2 for the ends. 2 layers, and staggered the 2nd, so that the seams were not over one another. Then stained them to match my wooden fence. Oh yes, and also screwed in pieces of 1" X 8" cedar planks on top of the posts. Have a nice place to sit all around the beds.
Am almost 70 now, so the raised beds are easier to work with...
With raised beds, they seem to dry out quicker, so watering is important. Believe that I will pick up some oat straw (never use hay) and mulch the beds this year. This will prevent the soil from drying out too fast, will keep the weeds down, and will enhance the soil for next year.
The more you learn and try, the faster your Green Thumb will grow. All the best to you!

I went to Las Vegas last week for a trade show and asked the family to PLEASE water the plants while I'm gone. Well, hubby says he watered them....but when I came back, the poor things looked parched. LOL. So what you say is true! I'll also look for oat straw. I plan to plants some strawberries so I know I'll need some of that, for sure. Thak you!

I've heard that coconut coir is a good mixture for soil due to amazing water retention as well

Looks like untreated (indoor) wood; if so, it won't last more than a year, maybe two. It's also too thin. Line bottoms and sides with chicken wire, because if ground rodents like moles discover your plant roots, it's over. I don't mean this in an ugly way. Just trying to spare viewers a couple of obvious mistakes that would leave them disappointed.
Did you watch the video? Lol. I think I clearly point out that its cedar. And if I didn't mentioned that, it was an oversight on my part. Cedar is perfect for outdoors. It will last a long time
@@ThriftDiving If you said that, I apologize because I missed it. Cedar is definitely the best wood you can use, but even cedar rots quickly when it's in direct ground contact, especially in a garden bed that you will obviously keep wet for the plants. I also said it's too thin, which will shorten it's life, and that you really must line it to prevent critters. Please understand I'm not saying this to attack or offend, but for the benefit of people who are here because they probably want to build their own raised bed. To them, my advise is cinder block or other stone. Lasts forever and can be gotten cheap. And it's easy too. Or if you're on some land, strip the bark of the next tree (or branches) you cut down and use that. A little more involved, but free, and although the logs will rot, they last longer because of their thickness.

Use Spax self drilling construction screws, no pilot hole needed. The other thing is you wanna put chicken wire on the bottom to keep moles out and you don’t need the paper lined, weeds will not grow up through 11” of soil. Also sprinkle epson salt around on the top of the soil.

Thrift Diving Magnesium, will help the plants produce chlorbphil. Also use Hydrogen Peroxide and mix one part of additive-free 35% hydrogen peroxide with ten parts water. Water infected plants thoroughly. The soil will bubble as the oxygen is released. For pests, water with the mixture twice a week, allowing the top 2 inches of soil to dry between watering. This will put more oxygen in the soil, results = better tasting veggies, sweeter tomatoes better plants 😃
I'm new to your channel but I love it because I'm am doing the same thing around my house. I have no idea how to do any gardening but I'm doing the same thing from the yard to furniture...thank you...how many bags if soil did you have to buy. I'm to that point.

Excellent, excellent, excellent... but puhleeuz… do NOT refer to it as dirt. We do not put "dirt" in our garden beds. Dirt is what we sweep off of the floor. This is "soil"... soil my love, soil, not dirt.

I made myself two big raised garden beds this year. Cost a lot of money and time but it allowed me to dig out my strawberries that were being buried until weeds and to cover up all the weeds. Yours look much better than mine
Right!! They're very expensive to build. I really started questioning myself if this was the best decision to do, since the cedar was so expensive, and everything was adding up. But there was a certain pride about planting my own food, and in the end, I realized that much of the expense is front-loaded. For years to come, it won't be expensive and we will save money growing some food staples of our own! :) Good job on making your own, too!

Do you have a patio in your apartment? If so, try some containers that you can keep on your patio. Or try some herbs that you could keep in pots in a sunny window! It would be a great way to start! :)
We've had great luck with 5-gallon buckets. As Thrift Diving says -- if you have a patio or even just a landing outside the rear door, could be enough. But anyway, yes! Get a house and then you can plant fence-to-fence.
Fill the second bedroom with dirt and install grow lights. You might be able to wire them into the buildings' wiring in the hall, because it can double your power bills.
Great job! At some point you'll need to add tomato cages, but what an awesome way to save money and provide healthy food for your family.

Yep, it's super easy! But the larger you go, the more effort (and money!). Cedar is pricey and hauling that dirt is a pain. But it's worth it (I think)! LOL
I followed your exact instructions only I used treated wood so it wouldn’t rot after all the work. I planted, and put wire around the entire thing. The birds, the squirrels, the moles, anything else that makes underground burrows, the slugs, snails, and other plant eating bugs got everything. What a waste of time and money. I even bought the best soil money can buy. 👎😡

actually your child spitting on the seeds is exactly what he should do. have your children if they and the seeds are big enough put them in their mouth for about 5 min getting their DNA all over the seeds then plant them but don't water til next day that plant will grow specific to your childs DNA, you could also have them spit in a cup and you soak them pour the spit on top of seed before you cover wait until next day to water them. they can also hold the seeds in their sweety hands. this works for adults also. it's also good to go to your garden in am before you wash your hands and touch your plants getting your DNA that comes from your pores as you sleep on them so you reinforce the plants programming. you should also work barefoot in your garden and soak your feet in plain water rubbing them against each other and put that water on your garden. this is science not conspiracy theories! many blessings!
2x4 would be much sturdier and not crack. Mount a board through the middle to keep the boards from bulging. 1x's are very weak!

I noticed your bed is deep so it may be OK, but mines only 11" deep so I think I should remove the grass under the bed and not put the paper so that the plant roots can go down deeper. Am I right?
Do the critters especially mice or rats just crawl up the mesh, should there be a top. I live next to a field and I have both. :-(

I always wondered if the bottom (ground) should be covered so gophers cannot chew roots from underneath.

Грядки из такой доски прослужит лет пять , Лучше делать из плоского шифера или стеновых панелей . Доска дороже и не эфективно , если доску не пропитать маслом отработанным из двигателя автомобиля .

A little spit won't hurt, you use poop as fertilizer. Setup a soaker hose with a timer if your to busy to water by hand.

Hi Serena. You did a fantastic job building your raised beds. I like you prefer the 3 x however long you want your bed, simply because it is easier than a 4 x ? for harvesting for me. I'm 5'2 and although I can reach in the 2 ft it still is a bit of a reach. I'm glad I came across your video and will subscribe to your channel.

Oh, you weren't insensitive at all! :) This is one of the bright sides of having an esophagus disorder: I'm not able to shove food into my mouth all day so I've actually been able to lose a few stubborn pounds *and* maintain the weight I lost when I was running earlier this year! LOL. I can only hope that after surgery when I am able to eat a bit more normal that I don't start going crazy again. I appreciate the compliment! I feel like I look the best I have in a LONG time, actually! :) Thanks, Elizabeth!!

I love your spirit! We moved into a house this Fall with 2 raised beds. So far I've "harvested" weeds, haha. Now that it's cleaned up I need to research easy things to grow. I love the fencing that you added too - I'll need that also.

How did the garden do? What will you plant this year?
Personally, I would have dug up the grass before filling with dirt. To give the plant roots uninterrupted access to go deep into the ground.

Actually, depends on what you're planting - most lettuces have shallow roots and are picked young, so don't need much depth, while tomatoes are planted very deep. You can plan for that so you only dig the beds that will actually utilize it.

Great job! I’m so impressed with your energy! I put mine together myself, but used these amazing corner brackets called Embraces that are sold here in my hometown, much fewer screws. I hired a youngster to move and dump all the soil from the delivery pile in the driveway. Definitely mulched. I have so much spinach, mustard greens, cilantro and parsley now! Tomatoes and eggplant next. Not sure how you’ll harvest with the fencing, bend over it? You are so inspiring! Thank you!

Thank you! I'm glad I made it look easy because it really was! The hardest part was hauling the dirt. That was a LOT of work. You don't realize how much 1 yard of soil is until you start hauling it by the wheelbarrow. I made about 20 trips, if not more! LOL

You made it looks so easy! I’m liking the fence planters too. One suggestion-I am an animal rescue/advocate. If you have a stray cat problem get in touch with a local feline rescue organization to coordinate a TNR (trap/neuter/release) program and see if you can get the population down before people get frustrated and harm them with poison or other inhumane methods. It will also stop the fighting you’re hearing as intact males will fight each other and cause serious harm. Females, of course, suffer from multiple litters and develop painful lethal uterine infections. They die a slow horrific death. All companion animals should be spayed or neutered. Thank you!
Thankfully a woman in the neighborhood coordinates the TNR program! There are a lot of strays here. The lady next door feeds them. And they poop in my yard. I stepped in a warm batch last summer while tending to my garden. Barefoot. 😂
