Scotty, I'm now 50 but also owned a new 2002 red SVT Focus just like this one in Montana. It was simply a blast to drive- perfect 50/50 weight distribution, the Cosworth-tuned engine had a lovely flat torque curve, and the Getrag 6-speed transmission pulled in every gear. I remember driving my mom over the Beartooth Pass Highway down to Cody, Wyoming in this car one summer. With twisty bends rated at 15 mph that I took at 35 mph due to the excellent suspension, I don't think my "co-driver" mom has ever forgiven me for the car sickness that resulted. Anyway, I ended up selling the car after about 4 years as the low ground clearance even with studded snow tires on all fours wasn't conducive to Montana winters and the exhaust was a bit too loud and drowning on long Interstate drives out here. Still, an immensely fun car and your video brought back great memories- this car was sold as the ST170 in England. What I wanted was the Focus RS of this era use by the Ford World Rally Team that we Americans couldn't get! THAT was the car I wanted...;)

I have to say, I'm thoroughly impressed with my Focus.
2004 SE Wagon 5-Speed Manual (Wagons with SE trim were sold to fleets, most Wagons are actually ZTW)
2.0L Zetec I4 turns around 130HP at the crank gets 28.5 MPG Combined, UP TO 36mpg Highway. Usually actually gets 32.4 highway.
Clutch lasted 183,000 Miles. I just replaced it 2 weeks ago. I've owned the car for 34,000 Miles/19 Months. I paid $1300 for it (it is a reconstruct, it was previously totalled and repaired) and I've put that into repairs in the entire 2 years I've had it - Most of it 2 weeks ago for the clutch, brakes, and the upcoming tuneup once the insurance company that rear ended me last weekend decides what we're doing with the $1000 bumper repair job.
There's another one near by that's for sale for $2800 - They are high on the price, but it has a new clutch and had some engine work done after my first test drive with it (with another car dealer) showed it had several hundred dollars of work needed done. That dealership went under and a repair shop got the car to sell. That one is a ZTW with the same exact engine and transmission

    Scotty, love your channel.
I own a 2016 Ford Focus ST, the spiritual successor to the original 2002-2004 SVT Focus.
I was going to purchase the Focus RS, but at the time (Jan 2016) the car had not entered production yet and I was coming off a lease.
The Focus ST is a great driver's car, with good handling and adequate power, for negotiating city and highways with ease. In hindsight, the early RS hade some issues with the motors blowing and of course the ridiculouas dealer ADM markups.
The Focus ST doesn't have the same attitude and grunt as my 2008 BULLITT Mustang, but it's the best balance of practicality and fun ....the definition of the hot hatch experience.
Now Ford doesn't even make cars....it's sad......hold on to your Focus!

I've had my 2003 Ford Focus ST170 for almost 11 years. 68,000 miles on the clock apart from after market wing indicator lenses and a K&N panel filter it's stock. It's been completely bullet proof (with one exception). It has needed work on the sills and offside wheel arch but then rains a lot and when it's icy they dump salt on the roads. The exception is the IRMC box the car is on it's 4th or 5th box. Someone on the facebook can bring it back to life for a fraction of what a new Ford part costs. I still enjoy driving the car and it's fast enough for roads in the UK where speeding detection devices proliferate. Some say they don't produce the Power, My car has been on a dyno at 169.1hp running supermarket fuel.

You are spot on with why we love hatchbacks with horsepower. Everything is small here, roads are narrow, car parks are cramped and we are obsessed with MPG. Everything is so different now a days all the Mums doing school runs drive big SUVs and even hatchbacks are increasing in size every new model that comes out. We are running out of space on our roads.

I plan on fully restoring them and 2 are getting a reworked base zetec non interference engine with forged crank and connecting rods for turbo charging. I am still looking for and finding them here in Florida for sale for either restoration or parts if beyond restoring. Yes I do agree with Scotty they are a hidden gem among the bad apples of the base ZX3 models and very fun to drive. Not signed up here to post videos as of yet but will do so to document work on them as I complete each.

Hello from England, Scotty. You're right. We love fast Fords over here. Not massively powerful, but light and they've always had a reputation for good handling. To be fair to Ford, their rust-proofing is much improved in recent years. Provided you keep on top of chips to the paint and don't allow rust to start and jet wash them regularly (underneath as well) to get rid of road salt, etc, they can last a long time.

Most recently, I went to replace a headlight bulb and discovered the entire assembly was melted and charred. For some reason, it clogs PCV valves like it's a hobby. Which in turn blows the valve cover gasket. I'm on my 3rd in a year. But overall, it's a great little car for $1,000.
