omg I just finished watching this on netflix. I had never heard of this story and thought there was going to be a happy ending. I just coudn't believe what happened to this beautiful soul. I couldn't stop crying. Everything in this story is just horrible. Even what happened to his brother when he was arrested. So much injustice. I just wish his lawyer had let him go on that trip, he so needed to get away. What difference would it have made if he took some time off to go. His lawyer told him to go after everything was over. Well that could have taken years. That boy needed a break. All these people who wanted to help him why didn't anyone take him out of the bronx even for a little while. His mother, his whole family are beautiful, my heart breaks.

He would have been a king if he wouldn't have took the easy way out. Life is hard. Claiming to be depressed, anxiety ridden or having ptsd isn't kingly, it isn't brave or isn't strong. It's reappropriation of blame abs a lack of physical accountability. What happened to kalif is wrong. It was illegal and it is shameful, but acting out like a coward isn't glorifying. I can't help but think of our ancestors in moments like this. What would their response be to phrases like depression, ptsd, anxiety, poor education system, blah blah blah wha. I don't have to imagine what they'd say. We actually have recordings of freed slaves in their own words on audio in the national archives. While in slavery they learned to read and write. While in bondage they learned to speak and enunciate English properly. While in bondage they kept their families together, refused government handouts and worked for a living to generate generational wealth. Most of the first black colleges in America were founded by blacks while still in slavery. And we want to cry depression because we didn't get a good cell phone with the government dime. We want to cry because the free house we were given for being failures in society weren't as great as the working man's housing. Shame on us. Shame on us. We should Fernand more from ourselves and our brothers and sisters. Stop all this race baiting and come together, light and dark alike. We can run the world if we but stop this division amongst ourselves and stop buying the hand that feeds us. By that I mean, we shouldn't be calling the people whose taxes pay for our very existence racist. They are providing us with Healthcare, education, food, shelter. They make it profitable for women to turn the father away. No one said we have to make that choice. No one said we must choose to raise our children alone negate it's easier than working. These are our choices. We only have ourselves to blame. Kalif had the ideals of our ancestors but the fortitude has been replaced by socialized whining. It's up to us to make the choice. It is up to us to remember our ancestors and make them proud.

I think Jay-Z/TIME should have contributed more by moving Kalief's family out of the neighbourhood as a start and follow up with counselling and therapy! Kalief was struggling mentally, its clear in all his interviews that he was asking for help. Now TIME is making money off of him. Sad..

I’ve just finished watching the series on Netflix and I come on TH-cam just to check if someone with a brain would make such a comment. Thanks for acknowledging this obvious situation. This family went through hell and I feel so sorry for Kalief. But I believe that God uses every one of us for a purpose, so was Kalief. May his soul Rest In Peace as well as his mother’s.

This story is so sad. I can't even fathom what he and his family had to go through. But part of me takes solace in the fact that he and his mother are in a better place away from this cruel world and the people who took part in the wronging of this family will one day have to face our Creator, the ultimate Judge. I just pray for this family and for this world.

I pray him and his mom Rest In Peace and that this never happens to anyone ever again. Why does someone have to die for there to be a reform? At the end of the day if he didn't go into solitary confinement he most likely would have lost his life do to physical violence but there is no way anyone can spend over 800 days in solitary confinement and not suffer from major mental illnesses afterwards. His death could have been avoided and it's ridiculous that no one will be held responsible for this.

He touched so many lives, famous people knew his story and supported him but no one offered to pay for him to see a counsellor? For him to move to a different area where he can better himself? They pushed him into the media, brought him to basketball games, than he goes back home to the same neighbourhood where he was targeted, apparently unmarked police cars would be parked outside of his house when was sent free, this guy needed help but he didn’t get it, he didn’t even get when left prison even though so many people said they cared.

"If he pled guilty, they'd let him go home that same day. If he maintained his innocence, he'd go back to jail for an unknown amount of time."
Which demonstrates that "innocent until proven guilty" is a myth.

There are some things that are called injustice but there are just some things that are pure wickedness and that is what I call what was done to kalief Browder by police, prosicutors, judges , prison guards at rikers island and savage beast prisoners at rikers , The things we do to hurt others we will not only pay for it on judgement day but we will pay right here in this era of time , repent america for judgement has come upon all the earth, "For if we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us { 1 John 1 : 10 } we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God but what makes the difference is this ! repent and turn from our wicked ways,

Kalief Browder made a CHOICE to stand the fuck up for himself and others will see reforms to the justice system because of it. He's a total hero!
So when Kanye says submission to slavery for 400 was a choice. Remove the emotion and think about Kalief Browder doing what 97% of those charged with crimes don't do. He didn't take the plea! CHOICE.
Sidebar: keep that bail money on deck for young adults in your family.

You people crack me up every time you say mental health or depression or ptsd. I'd sure like to know what the pioneers, the feed slaves or the Roman soldiers would have said in response to those phrases. They would have just slapped you people in the face, told you if you wanted something to cry about you wouldn't need to keep working so hard looking for our creating things to cry about. They'd gladly give you something to cry about. Depression my ass. Grow up, take some responsibly for yourselves and stop looking for someone else to have you a solution to your own delusion.

@@Du808-o8k The only reason Kalief Browder had bail, was because Kalief was on probation for larceny, Kalief's co accused Shamel Peterson was released on a promise to appear. Had Kalief not stolen a delivery truck, and had the larceny conviction, the government would have released Kalief on a promise to appear. One should think about the long term consequences before they break the law.
