The window to the driver uses a special glass containing liquid crystals that can be made transparent by applying an electrical current. The driver has control over this feature. This solution was chosen because: -Some drivers wanted privacy (on older trains curtains were used for this purpose) -passengers were supposed to be protected from traumatizing views should the train hit an animal or even a person Because the glass uses liquid crystals that turn transparent only by applying an electrical current, they will become opaque once that current is interrupted. Thank you for an excellent review. I am a huge fan of the ICE (T), and your service after leaving Wurzburg, runs to Frankfurt, then after reversal, takes the west bank of the Rhine through Mainz and Koblenz to Koln. Its tilting mechanism really comes into its own on that stretch !
8:30 Nice to see my university on a video 😅 Also i see trains in both directions on that bridge very often. Also ÖBB operates trains (even regional ones) on the Westbahn (Wels-Linz-part) very smoothly. Some ÖBB thingies are better than you can imagine here in Germany. 😅😅
I'm looking forward to your trip from Würzburg to Hamburg! I love the highspeed line between Würzburg and Hannover for its large valley overspanning bridges - makes you feel like flying over the landscape. Also ICE 1 with its large dining car is one of my favorites on that route! Good luck! The reliability issues of the ICE TD were solved, but these very short trains (only 4 coaches to fit onto the ferry to Denmark) proved economically unsuccessfull and were taken out of service therefore. What a pity! I would have loved to see them on the Franken-Sachsen-Magistrale, the Mitte-Deutschland-Line or the Eastern-Bavaria-Corridor.

Have you ever filmed on a Stadler KISS? Would be interesting to see since I come from Serbia, a country which is completing the first section of high speed rail (200 km/h) between Belgrade and Novi Sad and has ordered 3 four-car Stadler KISS trains. Would also be nice if you can come next year (line opens in february) to Serbia to film the route. I would also suggest to go on a trip from Belgrade to Bar which is one of the most beautiful railways in the world (but be warned that on some sections the train goes slow due to unmaintained infrastructure), there is a day and night train available. That trip now takes 11 hours, but improvement projects are announced and it will take 7 hours once it is complete. Hopefully we will see you soon!
Austrian "Westbahn" (the private passenger rail company operating on the Westbahn line - it can be confusing *g*) uses Stadler KISS trains. In fact they were the first customer to receive the upgraded trainsets for 200km/h (with some issues in the beginning). There are plenty of videos here on TH-cam.

ICE TD would actually do well on the Brightline HSR Lines actually. They run diesel so it allows them to share with freight trains or use inactive rail, on top of that independent tracks are being built so that will let it reach its speed a lot better
Traveled with them from Vienna to Frankfurt back in 2011 in 1st class. Nice experience. However for me, RailJet is still the most comfortable train service on long distance. Nice video as always.😎

@@agermanengineer831 It’s so easy to reserve a seat on an ICE, it’s included in the booking process and doing it yourself allows you to actually choose where to sit. DB’s system is just fine and I find it more user friendly than what I experienced with other carriers who assigned me seats.
Agree. If you want to reserve a seat it's really easy and possible during the booking process, you can't overlook it and you can even choose a seat if you want to. A seat reservation just costs a small extra fee and I usually forgo doing it because oftentimes you will still find a seat if you're not picky and I usually don't travel very long (it's usually something between 45 min and 2 hours) you just have to be aware that you're only guaranteed a seat if you reserve one.
you can choose to pay for a reservation or not to ... on some routes it's smart to take the reservation as there's a high demand, however on that route you'll always find some free seats. I went a stretch of that route for my daily commute and I never booked a seat and always found a free place to sit
I enjoy your videos. You always seem enthusiastic when presenting the material. You might like this bit of trivia. Hope it is new to you. Do you know of the song "The City Of New Orleans"? It is about one of America's 'city' trains from the past. It has been performed by several artists, including Arlo Guthrie (1972). The story behind the song is what I think might interest you. It came from an actual train ride. It was also part of an effort to try to stop the cancellation of that train. Wikipedia and other sites have more info. It was written and performed by Steve Goodman. Tragically, he died at age 36 from leukemia. He wrote the song after his diagnosis. A couple of lines I like: "Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor And the sons of pullman porters And the sons of engineers Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel"
I didn't realize that the diesel ICT was pulled from service. Man, that was a short service life. Still not as bad as the RTL-III incarnation of the Rohr Turboliner, but close!

The ICE-TD was first in service between Munich and Zurich for having an ICE service on a non-electrificated line with shorter journey times. But they were a bit too luxury and hadn't enough seating places to be profitable...
Do the sound barriers do anything for nearby residents or are they useless like highway ones? I know they cost a lot of money and obstruct the scenery on a lot of French lines, right?
You what I would love to see ? If you can spend some time on the meal services , how they are brought onboard, how they are made in first as well as coach, and a tour of the a galleys they use in both classes. I am a retired Flight Attendant and would love to see how they do this compared to how we would do it on outer planes …..I can not find anything on TH-cam on this subject… thanks in advance
Ah, seat reservations! My experience with DB is that it can show the seat unreserved and then somebody pitches up showing they have reserved that seat! Very confusing! I once tried to book a seat on the ICE from Cologne to Brussels several days prior to date of travel only to be told no seat was available. However a few hours prior catching that train I was able to reserve a seat! What on earth was going on? It does seem there is a problem within their reservations system.
You do any train trips in Asia? You should try some trips in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand et al. There are some gorgeous train routes in Asia and it’s really cheap to ride them. India has an extensive railway network and lots of scenic railway routes. And China too. I’d also recommend Australia and NZ. Try the Indian Pacific and Ghan in Australia and the Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine in NZ.
Sry Guys, but my English is bad. So I answer in german. 😅 Maybe someone can translate it?
Unfortunately you chose the wrong time to record the tilting action. The best time to do this is between Passau and Plattling and Regensburg and Nürnberg - these sections of route are where the higher speed is permitted due to the tilting and is where you see tilts of up to 8°. In Austria and other sections not fitted with this system, the train will only tilt to about 4°.

Longest river in Europe is not the Danube!! It’s the Volga
6:28 wow cool seeing another ice!
8:30 Nice to see my university on a video 😅
Also i see trains in both directions on that bridge very often.
@@SandraWuerthner Gut so.
I have been on this route twice and its pretty cool
1:45 And not the cold refreshing drink, either. 😂 By the way, love the video, man! Such a huge train buff and can hardly wait to see your next video and even someday take a ride aboard the ICE train myself.
Great review of a very nice and comfortable train. Now it is time to get these in America!
6:38 wow öbb pulls freight!
Didn't you just get an Interrail pass for journeys like this? Really no need to pay €112, I think.
book earlier and it will cost much less. I've never paid that much for this route
@@rubenvo3627 Sure, but if you run a railway review channel and thus travel a lot, an Interrail pass seems like an obvious choice to me. I travelled for as little as €32 per travel day in first class this summer...
InterRail tickets are reserved for people residing in Europe. For Americans, Japanese, etc. the EurRail ticket is available. Attention: if the travel date is not indicated, you will pay a penalty of US $ 100.00 on any European railway network.
@@rosanegriaspajorodriguez9006 Good thing he is from France.
Or "Sparpreis"/"Sparschiene" in Germany/Austria
Great work, it's always a joy watching your videos :)
Btw would it be possible to test the WiFi in the trains? I think that might be interesting for many people.
Bruh you didn’t pay for seat reservation and then complain that it was difficult to find a seat…
Most european train companies sell ticket and seat together - should be a standard
@@kaku_96 you even get a free seat when traveling first class, no extra charge, and even if, 4€ isnt much
Thanks for the ride !!!
I tried normal DB intercity trains and the were very good!
Enjoying this thank you 👍😊
I enjoy your videos.
A couple of lines I like:
"Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor
And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel"

I didn't realize that the diesel ICT was pulled from service. Man, that was a short service life. Still not as bad as the RTL-III incarnation of the Rohr Turboliner, but close!
ICE T has the biggest seat space in the current ICE Family with 97 cm in second class and i think 101 cm in first
Yes - in ICE 4 they went down to 86 cms seat pitch. I cancelled my Bahncar 100 subscription therefore.
Have you seen the special liveryb one of the ICE TD had in Denmark, it was blue and white, and had kinda the same livery as the danish IC4?
I have so.e Trip ideas, where you should go to:
1. Dortmund - Essen - Düsseldorf - Cologne
2. Cologne - Bonn - Koblenz - Mainz
3. Koblenz - Traben-Trarbach - Trier - Luxemburg
The ICE-TD was first in service between Munich and Zurich for having an ICE service on a non-electrificated line with shorter journey times. But they were a bit too luxury and hadn't enough seating places to be profitable...
There is another route where they are used it's Dresden to Nürnberg Hbf via Tharandter Rampe Dresden Chemnitz Gutenfürst Hof during 2001-2004.
Great video !!
Good review as always.
We rode on the ICE-TD from Hamburg to Copenhagen in 2012, pity that line with ferry connection has been discontinued..
They discontinued, because they are building a tunnel for trains and cars there.
ICE T? Sweet or unsweet? 😂
Just kidding, glad to see a new train review of a part of the world I look forward to traveling to again in the future!
Nice ice train germany wow love from mumbai.
Great, the german trains are excellents. Greetings from the south of the world
Do the sound barriers do anything for nearby residents or are they useless like highway ones? I know they cost a lot of money and obstruct the scenery on a lot of French lines, right?
I was on a swiss train the journey was like 1h and 30 mins
The old ICE 3 seats are better - much better - than the new ones.
I think the new ICE L (which can go up to 230 km/h) is intended to replace the ICE T. 9:44
Maybe someone can translate it?
i will go from vienna to dortmund with this ice on december !!!
i guess it had a music radio play thing, never saw one in old ICEs...or it was planned but never came into live traffic
It was in the old ICEs, but with the first refurbishment they removed the screens and 3,5mm sockets.
If you buy a ticket with" sparschiene" you pay as low as 55 euro
Vienna hbf monumental?? Its build in 2012
Unfortunately you chose the wrong time to record the tilting action. The best time to do this is between Passau and Plattling and Regensburg and Nürnberg - these sections of route are where the higher speed is permitted due to the tilting and is where you see tilts of up to 8°. In Austria and other sections not fitted with this system, the train will only tilt to about 4°.
Cool video....Greetings from Romania.....Why are trains so freakin expensive tho in Europe.....:(. It's sad. You can do this trip with a car or Flixbus at a fraction of this price.
If you buy Tickets in advance it can coast around 20-25€.
What job do you do where you have to travel so much? Just youtube or what?
Nice train video.
The St.Pancras ICE won't be reintroduced as well.
For that price you don't even get to select a seat?!
For less than 10€ you can reserve seats. I recommend that on the weekends when trains are busy. It gave us peace of mind after we learned the hard way about seat reservations.
@@cogman62 its 4€ at DB. even if you change you get a seat on all long distance trains along your trip for that price. (also i paid 41,90€ for a trip from Vienna to Düsseldorf which is basically twice as long plus seat reservations so he seems to have booked very late)
@@MerleTrains I didn’t know the current rate. It’s very cheap and worth it.
I would prefer s9me narration, instead of the fine white print on the screen. The train itself is very beautiful and accentuates how poor USxtrains are in comparison! Oh, how I would love to primarily travel by train - the civilized way to travel, and see the continent!
1:50 which flavour? Mango, citrus or peach? 😅
As ICE 3 and ICE 4 has been built. Do you think that ICE 5 trains could be built and to be tilted. Just like the Class 390 Pendolinos.
Is this train part of the NWA railroad?
Ice tea!!
Thx 👍🏾😎
Yey.... 🚂
Will we see the nice paris sleeper train soon?
a tilting ICE, where the tilting was never in use 🤣🤣🤣
Can You Please Review Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited From New York To Chicago? Thanks 😁
Nice trip. I'm curious about ICE-TD, where the engine located?
Bottom
I miss the ice tds ;)
I don't think the trains should be replaced they aren't that old
did they serve iced tea on it?
i think i was in austria at the time of this video being recorded
i also think i reviewed the ice t in first class once, but i thought it was a ice 3 for some reason... 🤷♂️
Dortmund again? what are you doing there?
The window can manually be blurred. But it's strange, that it does it randomly
It's also triggered by the loss of overhead power (to avoid traumatic views in case of an emergency), so it blurs whenever the main switch of the train is off (e.g. when passing a border between two feeder substations).
The driver’s cabin looks like the front of a jet.
I don't like it when it's sitting in the opposite direction to the train's march
Hy first time ice train 🚆 look see 🙏🙏
Station so development beautiful 😍😍😍 ..
Thanks videos
L v u ❤️😎😎😘😘😘
Imagine being overtaken by the s-bahn
the uk buying fast trains that work and have food areas etc lolo they would far rather buy cheap nasty rubbish that falls apart in seconds!
