"Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis, and when the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of, and unto this, Conan destined to wear the crowned jewel of Acquilloina upon a troubled brow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of this saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure."
The introduction from the very first Conan tale is way more epic. Take a look at it: "KNOW, oh prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars-Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyperborea, Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingara with its chivalry, Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west. Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen- eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet."-The Nemedian Chronicles
He tried getting with Red Sonja a couple times because he was attracted to her but she kept rejecting him it was also said Valeria wasn't the greatest love of his life that title belonged to Belit the pirate queen.
Belit was the most ardent of Conan's lovers, but was also a fierce and untamed pirate and reaver. Their brief affair was ultimately doomed because of her lust for riches. When she and her crew lead Conan to a dead and forgotten city that held an unspeakable demon. Belit and her entire crew were wiped out by this monster. Conan avenged Belit, but this tale was a tragic turning point in Conan's life and he left piracy to try and forget her.
Yeah well... But as a fan of Rober E. Howard's Conan writings, Belit was his greatest love because it was actually the first love in his life. Conan is very young in the "Queen of the black coast" which is the short story where Belit makes her debut. Years later in Conan's life came Valeria, but he ultimately settled for a harem when he became king of Aquilonia.
Valeria in the 1984 film was kind of based of Belit, as the Valkayrie scene in the final battle was most definitely copied from the climax of Queen of the black coast. In which the spirit of Conan's lover appears before him and his enemy
I discovered Conan with Marcel's #3 in early 70's. I still have a large collection! Most of the novels as well. Robert E. Howard had an amazing imagination. Cheers!
@@AbstractM0use Also a good read! I became aware of the comics from the Savage Sword of Conan series and the movies from the classic Arnie ones. Good times.
The OG Arnie flick was shown to me as a young boy, and then in an even better turn of events my father and uncles comic collection was bestowed upon me which included a great deal of Conan material. They are my treasures today along with my own amassed collection.
Except that his Conan and the Conan from the original stories by Robert E. Howard are completely different characters. As bad as the movie is, Jason Momoa's Conan is much more similar to the original one from the short stories.
Hey, how about covering the wolf-witch who banged Conan in exchange for information about Thulsa in the original movie? She's mysterious one for sure, I think she deserved to be on the channel one day ❤
@AbstractM0use, I don't think Arnold could do that kind of character anymore it's too demanding not to mention tough, and today he's just old and sodded !
Hopefully arnold schwarzenegger will comeback to play conan the barbarian for 1 last time before he retires from acting and I hope the Netflix conan the barbarian tv show is good as well
Hell yes, the Conan stories are awesome. The Arnold movie is awesome, but not very Conan at all. Funnily enough the movie is essentially based on Kull of Atlantis, another Howard character. They even used Thulsa Doom, a Kull villain. Solomon Kane is another great Robert E Howard character.
I've been saying this for years. When I finally came to see to movie I have to admit that I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. But when compared to the original stories by Robert Howard, it bears almost no resemblance to the actual Conan. So much so, that the only thing they share is the name haha.
I think they've never been exactly able to best each other in equal combat, but he is the only one that's come the closest to defeating her on several occasions, but Red Sonja's pride (and vow) won't let her admit defeat.
In the books and films, Conan never met Red Sonya. Red Sonya was created by RE Howard as a pilot and gun fighting partisan of recent years. Marvel comics would take that character and recreate her to fit into Conans world. They only met in the comics.
Another fun fact: the Red Sonja that fought Conan is a comics creation. Robert E Howard wrote about a character named Red Sonya In "The Shadow of the Vulture". But this woman is Polish-Ukrainian and a gun-slinger. Howard's Red Sonya was not connected to any of Howard's Conan stories. But Roy Thomas and Barry Smith, while working at Marvel Comics, Conan the Barbarian title, took the basic look & concept Red Sonya to create Red Sonja (note the spelling change)who lived alongside Conan in the Hyborian Age. In the lore of the New Red Sonja it was told that in universe the Hyborian age Sonja was the distant ancestor of the Sonya Howard had written about.
Hollywood has never produced a Conan movie that even came close to the picture of Conan in the minds of those who read all the Robert E. Howard novels and stories. According to the books; Conan was about 6'9, weighed close to 300lbs, had ice blue (killers) eyes, and was scarred up all to hell by the many battles he had been in. Every time I see those brown-eyed Conan's in the movies I automatically smdh. Again, according to the books; It was Conan's destiny to rid the Hyborian age of the remaining Sorcerers and demons, and thus a new 'age' could begin without that sorcerous influence effecting the new course of humanity. At least that's what I grokked from them. And I have read ( I think) everything Robert E. Howard ever published about Conan, and some writings found that were not officially published. Those movies though interesting have never satisfied us true Conan fans.
Zamora is a country. Granted this wasn't made very specific in the movie however according to Robert's own map of the Hyborian world Zamora is actually a country. It's main city however is Shadizar. But thank you for pronouncing Cimmeria correctly.
I love the the first film. If you want to see how WIDE the gap in quality between Barbarian and Destroyer are, just watch them both, back to back. Barbarian is actually beautifully shot, has an amazing score and for what it is, the acting is good. James Earl Jones is clearly the best actor here, but don't discount Arnold, Sandahl Bergman, Gerry Lopez, MAKO and of course the great Max von Sydow. I can't understand how Destroyer gets any defenders. I grew up with that film as my first Conan foray in the 80's and I don't much like it. The 2011 film is...........Red Sonja is average IMO. I don't dislike it as much as others and right now, I like it better than Destroyer. John Milius and crew did an amazing job on Conan the Barbarian and that is how I will remember the series.
We so badly need a new ip for Conan movies, TV shows and best yet, an action packed combat rpg video game, as Conan! Be it Arnold or direct Robert E. Howard lore. I hate how they ruined the image of this classic, with latest shite games on console and PC.
