    Check out the first review of the 2019 hot-saw, Stihl MS 500i. First ever serial produced chainsaw with fuel injection instead of a carburetor! New record in power-to-weight ratio and awesome acceleration.

    Here in Southeast Alaska on the Tongas National Forest, I have been running my Stihl 440 and 460 for years, for logging, chainsaw milling, and with my Lewis winch. As I have grown older and my family has grown I run my saws less frequently. Over time the only problems I have had with my Stihls were carburetor related (2 rebuilds each), so I am EXCITED about fuel injection. My 460 is 15 years old so I think I can justify the 500i when it comes out. Thanks for a good video!

    Coming from a traditional dolmar guy it looks like a really good tool. Only two screws to service, very steady idle and clean full throttle pulls.
    As for the stupid comments about the air filter he specifically notes he is opening it after 20 refills. There is absolutely no saw in the market that doesn't require cleaning after 10 refills. Let alone 20 that he did.

    Excited to see a fuel injected chainsaw, but I'll wait until they've been in the field a couple years before considering one. First model years in anything tend to have more issues, and fewer refinements because manufacturers haven't had enough data returned from end users, and servicing dealers to see what works, and what needs tweaking, or what would benefit from being added or removed.

      Still have not bought one, mainly because my old Stihls have been pretty reliable. If with the occasional repairs I have to do, I cannot bring myself to spend the money on a new saw. One of my small saws, the MS170 is getting a little tired, but since its mostly my limbing and brush saw, maybe an battery powered saw will replace that one.@@karm00n29

    I would loved to have seen it compared to a MS462 or MS461 rather than a much smaller MS362.

    • @skogsforum
      @skogsforum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Would like that too. Hopefully it's coming. It can be risky doing e.g cookie-cutting comparisons only, I believe you have to go deeper than that. Moreover, saws in such comparison needs to have been run for the same amount of time. A new saw, like this above, tends to perform better and better with each refuel. What do you think would be a minimum om running hours before a fair test could be done?

    • @clintonsisler
      @clintonsisler 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have a MS461 that I use for milling lumber and am looking to upgrade to a bigger saw possibly a MS661 or MS880, but hearing about this saws performance and weight I'm interested in how this saw would compare as a potential replacement for that role in comparison to the MS461. As far as run time before comparing them I would think after running 10 tanks of fuel each would be a reasonable break in period for each and then do the comparison of the two saws.

    • @Chris-Fennimore
      @Chris-Fennimore 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Although it looks like a great falling saw, I wouldn't use the 500i for slabbing. I would stick with a 660 or larger.

    • @johnmorris7960
      @johnmorris7960 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Chris-Fennimore I agree and if I wanted my saw to last I would mix my oil 30:1 and back the top rpm down some to help it survive. I have seen first hand that a MS661 will not survive milling and it won't run on a mix other than 50:1. I bet this saw is the same way. I think these saws have there place and hopefully they will be a better setup than the electronic carburetors. Whatever you do, if you do purchase one of these or an electronic carburetor saw, don't tell your dealer you are using it for slabbing because I have seen them get out of warrantying a saw.

    • @stihltech206
      @stihltech206 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@johnmorris7960, I wouldnt go messing with mix ratio unless you are running a type that reccomends it. Also, you cannot adjust top rpm on the electronic saws, it is computer controlled. Also, all Stihl chainsaws are designed to be used at full throttle under load, if you mess with throttle settings or mix ratio you can wind up with sludge or coke in the cylinder. Always use mix oil designed for air cooled 2-stroke engines.

    • @dumper87
      @dumper87 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Loner Wolf yes it’s overpriced, has sloppy motor mounts, and sure as hell doesn’t feel like 6.7HP, but it’s definitely rebuildable. Anyway, my bone-stock 572 doesn’t struggle to keep up with the 500is and is less fatiguing to use with the better mounts.

    I think it will be very interesting to find out how these test out in 1000's of hour of real world use. Also somebody is going to come along and want to mess with the electronics and set up to see if they can tweak even more out of it. It sounded great from here and was eager to cut wood. I think a price point comparison between it and what normal carb chainsaws cost would be a good idea as well.

    It's not the first EFI chainsaw ever made. I made on once but used windows vista to run the EFI computer control.
    It took about 5 - 7 minutes of vigorous pulling (Not sure exactly cause I passed out from exhaustion once) to get the computer too boot up and run but every time it kicked back hard while cutting it would bluescreen on me.
    After two days of use I went back to using a unsharpened late 1800's hand powered buck saw I found in the mountains a few years before.

    Hi, great review !! I really want one of these saws. At 14 mins 50sec it looks like the casing behind the pull start is breaking up? Greetings from Cornwall ,south west England

    Holy moly look at all that material getting past the air filter seal! Why did Stihl not go with the air injection that they now have on the 241 through 462?

      kyle smith its not the seal its the filter itsself are being made in the china factory along with alot of the plastics

      @@josephwarren8420 Lots of stuff made in China for sure but I think guys have been having this problem for years with the HD filter system. The new click knobs on the filter covers don't help with the sealing. It is better to swap them out for an old style screw knob and tighten them down more or better yet use a MaxFlow oiled filter. Twenty tanks is also waaaay to much time for one of these filters, they should be cleaned/switched daily if not after a half a day. I have noticed that putting the filter on with the same side up always helps with sealing as the base plate can deform the sealing lip which causes problems with sealing if the filter is not put on the same way. Doesn't sound like much but after cutting 5-10 tanks it makes a difference.

      I think when he took the filter off that dust fell down there.

    It cuts faster for sure but that has to do with a great sharp chain to. It has plenty of power.

    Everyone is complaining about the air filter system but it seems to look pretty good to me with 20 tanks ran threw it and to have that little bit of sawdust. If you blow your saw out after you use it and clean the filter I dont think there would be a problem.

    I don't really thing it's a good idea that chainsaw should use the EFI system. Since an EFI system has a lot of sensors, who can be disturbed by dust and dirt, and since this is a chainsaw, there will be a lot of. Also most likely the repair fees will be high since such parts as sensors are ALWAYS overpriced. Sure, there are advantages, such as theres no choke, and better efficiency
