Before Elvis sang Hound Dog there was Big Mama Thornton, in 1952, she recorded "Hound Dog" while working with another Peacock artist, Johnny Otis. Songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were present at the recording, with Leiber demonstrating the song in the vocal style they had envisioned. The record was produced by Leiber and Stoller as Otis had to play drums after it was found that the original drummer couldn't play an adequate part. It was the first time Leiber and Stoller produced a recording, which went to number one on the R&B chart. Although the record made her a star, she saw little of the profits.

Paco Chamaco How you interpret a song already written is not co-writing. That comes under arrangement. Writing is strictly words and music. And who's to say it was Elvis who changed the song? It could have been a group effort.
Paco Chamaco This is where there is a very grey area is songwriting - arrangement Vs writing. Not in a case like this where it's black & white, but a band where a member comes in with the bare bones of a song and the band work it up into something real good and the guy who came in with the unshaped form gets the royalties. It's been the reason many have left bands. The Stones are a great exapmle

I really love late 40s and early 50s blues, rhythm and blues and swing/big band music. It was a time when those styles were merging and morphing into what would be named Rock and Roll, which originally meant only the dance but it soon became a music genre and a lifestyle. It's fascinating how it evolved from Fats Domino or Rosetta Tharp among others to Bil Haley to Chuck Berry, Little Richard or Jerry Lee Lewis to Elvis to Billy Holiday in under a decade. Then we got the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, tten The Doors, Jimmy Hendrix and Janis Joplin and then in the late 60s and early 70s many subgenres appeared.
Everyone comparing both and hating one while loving the other, I’m just vibing to both of them for my history of rock n roll class. Both versions are great. I won’t lean to which I’d prefer because both are different and unique in their own way

A voice to give you chills, the emotions, the soul, the pain, the truth of thee experience…. You feel it
This is a women's song and should be sung by a woman with a powerful voice.
Big Momma Thornton sang it better than Elvis ever could.
@@johnnyrocker7495 Idiotic response.
A man singing about being a "HOUND DOG"!
You are aware that the phrase was used to describe a man who's constantly on the prowl for one night stands correct?
@@johnnyrocker7495 how is it nonsense this washes elvis' remake

@@takara_.1627 ^^what they said
I just found out about her today. I love her song way better.
Great song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Two young men from New York who went on to right some of rocks greatest early tunes.
Thornton's version is my favourite. But nobody "stole" the song. It was written by two professional songwriters, Lieber and Stoller, who owned the copyright. So long as publishing rights are observed, anyone is entitled to record a version. Even the people commenting on this post!
Most don't realise that the singer doesn't write the songs they sing in a lot of cases. Especially in the 50's and even more in The Voice today
Yes, but Elvis did change the song drastically, both words and music. He should've got a co-writer credit for that.
Elvis used the Las Vegas act of Freddie Bell And The Bellboys from spring 1956 as his version... not Big Mama Thorton's...
give this goddess credit,, this is an amazing song
This song was really ahead of its time.
Man I can imagine those juke joints in the south on Friday and Saturday night's listening and dancing to down home blues and drinking corn liquor
That ain't Big Mama in the photo, it's Josephine Baker, who was Not Big!
Yoshie Hill thanks for the truth!
thank you for catching that.
Maybe not, but she did have nice legs, didn't she?:)
Josephine was an entertainer and dancer. During the war she helped the French Resistance, and was given the French Medal of Honor by Charles Degaulles! You can't compare their singing styles at all. Josephine performed all over Europe where she sang and did a hoochy-coochy act, and meanwhile she smuggled members of the Resistance with her band. She is a heroine! A Daughter of France!
Yoshie Hill You Need to be corrected way bigger Josephine was bigger than her like comparing Michael Jackson to underground singers
Pure gold so underappreciated
incredible quality and technology of the 1950s! Electric guitars? I thought they only played trumpets and pianos then :) .. Great to dance even today! :)
Wow...first time listening to this version. I just replayed it 10 times. After a couple beers get out my way because the dance floor will be burning.
This was my first favorite song as a child
It still is . What a powerhouse .
Amazing that today we have auto tune and have no idea what artists really sound like. This is so real and you can feel it. She deserves all the credit in the world. It's a shame, just because of her skin color and her gender she's been looked over.
yo, just to let you know, there was autotune back then, in a different shap and form, but it existed, i guarantee there was autotune in here, maybe not much but its stil there

A gem

Having been so familiar with the Elvis version for all these years (like most people, I would imagine), I have to say that even though I've only heard this recording once,I consider it far superior.
Superior? Opinions are like assholes.
@@donn409 What the fuck is your problem? It's only a fucking opinion, I didn't state it as a fact, did I?

This is awesome she has one hell of a voice would have been super cool to see her perform live!
The guitar is pure killer right alongside Big Mama's incredible vocal. Like MrDan said, this is as hard core as any hard rock or metal band ever tried to be!
This is the real rock n roll and one of the queens of it.
I never knew that, and love this version so much better
You have that right.
This is the way this song should sound. Plus the lyrics make more sense when she sings it.
This is my first time hearing her voice and danm!
rock and roll is cool but nothing beats the blues and the rocking and rolling of big mama thornton
@@donn409 Rock and Roll comes from the Blues and Gospel.
Her voice is so badass 😌😂😰
This is a great bluesy version. She does a great job! Woweee!
Im just glad that these days the creators of rock n roll are recieicing their just due and getting the recognition they deserve and that with hip hop many of the originators and pioneers are alive to recieve theirs. Black artists must be credited, cherished and recognized
You do realize the song was written by a couple of white guys?
Her voice is so powerful. Like a storm.
You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Been snoopin' 'round the door
You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Been snoopin' 'round my door
You can wag your tail
But I ain't gonna feed you no more
You told me you was high-class
But I could see through that
Yes, you told me you was high-class
But I could see through that
And daddy, I know
You ain't no real cool cat
You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Been snoopin' 'round the door
You're just an old hound dog
Been snoopin' 'round my door
You can wag your tail
But I ain't gonna feed you no more, oh play it on Sam, oh!
Aw, listen to that there old hound dog
Oh, play it, it s'all right in here
Oh, listen to that there old hound dog holler
Oh, play it boy, play it
Oh, you make me feel good
Oh, do the mess around right now, yeah
Now wag your tail
Oh, get it now
Oh, get it now, get it, get it, get it
Oh, go, holler boy
You made me feel so blue
You made me weep and moan
You made me feel so blue
Well you made me weep and moan
'Cause you ain't looking for a woman
All you lookin' is for a home
You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Quit snoopin' 'round the door
You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Quit snoopin' 'round my door
You can wag your tail
But I ain't gonna feed you no more, oh!
Wow I really like this version as much as the Elvis version. They are each given completely different treatments, making them feel like two different songs to appreciate.
This lady makes sense!
Love this Rhythm and Blues song I herd it was recorded in 1953 by Willie Mae Thorton It was her song first I know Elvis copied song in 1956 Been listening to the Rhythm and Blues since I was a teenager in the 1970s 15 in 1976 on the Oldies Channel back then Still do to this day Those Rhythm and Blues Songs are so Awesome on TH-cam!!!!! I know Elvis liked the Rhythm and Blues songs
Due to influence, cultural impact, shock value and sound-recording quality ... possibly the greatest 78 record ever recorded ...
Loved her scene in Elvis (2022)! Shonka Dukureh played her so well. RIP ❤️
Big Mama Thornton - vocals
Johnny "Kansas City Bill" Otis - drums
Pete "Guitar" Lewis - guitar
Mario Delagarde - bass
Leiber and Stoller - songwriters, producers
Tarantulisimo Elvis Presley - thief
Can a black Yo Gimme Subs Exactly who did he stealth is from?
Pete 'Guitar' Lewis is so funky on this. Perfect for Big Mama's growling vocals. In my list of best all time R&R/R&B records.
Big momma killed it
I'm obsessed with her voice 😍😘😄
Yet another excellent recommendation Mr. Lynch!
Seconded
Absolutely the first badass guitar “ Rock n Roll “ solos . So cool 👍
Love this woman, What A Voice! 🎶🎵🎷🥁🎻🎺🎸💙🙏💜
I love Elvis's version for Scotty Moore's crazy guitar solo, but Big Mama just blew it away. This is the one I keep coming back to.
This is one of my favourite guitar pieces of all time it feels so in the moment and authentic. The solo is fantastic it fully captures the feel of the song 🙏🙏
So happy that she was initiated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this month. This is SO good.
I've always loved Elvis' version, but I like this just as much! What GREAT blues song!
It’s was her song to begin with! Elvis stole that song & his version was trash!
Just a timeless classic single from 1952 as this was Originally done By Big Mama Thornton Herself just a great tune
I am not a jazz/blues enthusiast and I am so happy that Elvis captured this song (in his way) and put himself on the map.
This is a Blues song.
Yes...musical taste is subjective..
What is sour to one person is sweet to another...
isn't it wonderful that we have so much music to choose from.
Doja gets all the love for sampling this 🔥🔥🔥
Love Elvis's version, but OH MY GOSH!!! Big Mama Thornton rules this song!!!
Nah.
Can't say I love Elvis version due to her beastinh her original song. Elvis Song at this point does not exist. This is dope!!
Elvis' version was a cover of Freddie Bell and the Bellboys' version lol
Correct, he used the other arrangement.
Just wayyyy better than the Elvis version.
i cant be the only one who finds this superior to the elvis version in literally every single way
Wow just wow. I am gonna play this at work today
Love that bluesy voice!!
Everyone comparing both and hating one while loving the other, I’m just vibing to both of them for my history of rock n roll class. Both versions are great. I won’t lean to which I’d prefer because both are different and unique in their own way

Damn why am I just hearing amazingly powerful voice for the first time😍
Elvis WISHES he had performed it this well, wow what an incredible woman!!!!
He did just fine with his cover. Same thing with Junior Parker's "Mystery Train" which both versions were released on Sun Records.
