This IS why I love the blues. The blues is just as dark and brutal as heavy metal.
The Beatles have a couple of song that really prove that point. Specifically, I'm talking about Yer Blues and I Want You (She's so Heavy)
@@savagebiker1879 yes!!
metalhead here
just yes
The blues comes from a dark and brutal place. Much more brutal.
Don't need no metal if it's true blue
One of the best deliveries in music history, bro didn’t hold back
I agree. I love this spooky song. And I also like the Hocus Pocus version.
Understatement. This guy made melodic screaming "the thing". No body was doing it like THIS till Screaming jay came along. Frank Zappa once said that Screaming Jay actually freaked people out with his screaming and that Johnny Guitar Watson had hands down the most evil and sinister tone in blues guitar.
makes you do the same
Yes he could scream like hell, and did so. God bless... Masterpiece.
FUN FACT: Not only is this the ORIGINAL recording of the song, but it was meant to be more sentimental and soft, but everyone at set that day including Jay and his band gotten extremely drunk, this lead to the recording becoming more loud and spooky, this gave birth to Jay's "Voodoo Personality" and allowed him to be the father of "Shock Rock"
That's an awesome story they did an excellent job drunk and all ♥️
@@mariavictoriasalita5273 why would you say that??
One of the most important songs of the 50s only came to be because a bunch of bros trashed themselves on alcohol, beautiful 😆
@@dawhoda1 there was an anecdote behind this. While they were practising the song, their producer brought ribs and fried chicken in the studio and they had a couple of drinks with these. Long story short, they've recorded the song while they were drunk and this is the result and the rest is history.
@@dawhoda1 They were actually eating chicken and ribs.
Screaming J came to Australia. Australia was never the same after he put a spell on us.
No one not even james brown can scream like screamin..jay hawkjns!!
You're joking, you're joking! I can't believe my ears. He sounds amazing.
" Uggh..This goes out to youuu..this goes out to youuu..this goes out to youu and you and you and you"
Those guys made America great forever
What a phenomenal vocal performance. A man who created his own groove.
Thank you black people for making rock, country, jazz, blues...........Thank you for making this country an artistic and fun place. Happy Black History Month from this mexican girl.❤❤❤

Yall crackin' jokes, but this song has always been dope as hell.

Fantastic song
He inspired Screaming Lord Sutch in Great Britain. Another performer of epic talent who paved the way for all of the shock rockers afterwards.
“Kick in the door, wavin' the .44
All you heard was, "Poppa, don't hit me no more"”
It is the best I have heard in my life among other songs, I appreciate this song because it makes me feel something nice in my chest 😍

You know how when singers really belt out a note, they pull the mic away quite a distance? How far do y'all think they pulled away from this guy? They probably yanked it back to the rafters like in those old school boxing matches lol
This song is to my husband Mr and I ain't lion
Well now I know where Tom Waits got his thang
the song “kick in the door” from notorious big, has the same beat
50´s screamo...👍
I bet this was supposed, originally, to just be, like, a wedding song...right?
Increíble....
thanks to Biggie for leading me here. :)
Horror song.

It is one of my favorites songs, but not this version, for sure!
I put this song as a form of dark psychology while I remind my neighbours how dumb they are in the name of their faith.

Biggie! Kick in the door……..y’all know the rest! DJ Premier did this classic sample justice for Biggie!
Where is kick in the door waving the 44 in this song?

From wiki: Hawkins had originally intended to record "I Put a Spell on You" as "a refined love song, a blues ballad". However, the producer (Arnold Maxin) "brought in ribs and chicken and got everybody drunk, and we came out with this weird version ... I don't even remember making the record. Before, I was just a normal blues singer. I was just Jay Hawkins. It all sort of just fell in place. I found out I could do more destroying a song and screaming it to death.
That’s kinda cool.
@Richie A That is weird as hell and makes complete sense lol!
Isnt nina simone the original artist though?
@@michaelryan9311 No, this is from 1956- hers was from 1964. There are so many covers of this song- even a huge hit for Creedence. There is only one nuclear version.
A lot of musicians tell tales about how they came up with a monster hit by accident- fooling around in the studio for 15 minutes- one take- etc. Some may be half true, but there are no real accidents in music. Also, I think when you go as big and heavy as he does here you may need the "drunk" backstory and the comic voodoo fillers as a defense mechanism. Jimi pulled off the most intense apocalyptic blues usually affecting an offhand manner, fooling around with lyrics, dressed up as Little Richard. You have to sing Vesti La Giuba in a clown suit...
Furthermore jay was black out drunk when he recorded it and had to learn his own song afterwards
Idk what I expected from a man named Screamin’ Jay Hawkins but this is it
🤣🤣 can't expect nothing less
Check out Angelina Jordan's version- this was obviously her model and inspiration.
You should give his song Frenzy a listen.
@Da Hoodoo WARRIOR Can
It can''t compare- different version of the song.
I’d really like to hang with you sir
Everybody was drunk in the studio. Especially Jay Hawkins.
He was blackout drunk and had to re-learn the song later from his own recording, haha
Jay Hawkins was drunk when he recorded this song. And, he was drunk when he performed the song live.
Rpm 🌼Drunk And Dong amazingly like this. WOW. 🌼
Yo know...that actually makes a whole lot sense. I just though he was that obligatory weird star of the decade xD
Best songs recorded when high or drunk. For example George Clinton Atomic Dog.
You know a voice is good when you need the barest backing instruments to carry the song.
Fuck yeah!!
OzzieBloke ....notice the bass is a standup acoustic bass, not a Fender
Electric bass. Because of that , I would say the recording is from 1964 or maybe
1965...( my grammer school year ) .
His vocals are clear and steady drunk or sober.
@@michaelcelani8325 This recording is from 1956.

Lots of shit lost in the 50s. People were pretty free then.
@@michaellong6605 you mean you arent happy with wearing masks and being threatened to have your job taken from you if you dont get the vax?
More than that. I was a kid on the loose in the 50s and people were different and just didn’t even imagine how dull and restrictive life could be.
@@michaellong6605 People were free yeah right certain people were free you mean
I saw Screamin' Jay Hawkins in a small theatre club in Manchester in 1965. He put on one hell of a show! My friend was reluctant to come with me, because the club was better known for putting on strip shows, but he was glad I persuaded him to come see a master showman.
@Dennis Hodgson - what was the name of the club?
Wish I could have been there!
What's wrong with strip shows now? lol
That must’ve been dope
Sounds absolutely awesome.
Because you're miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine
hHahahahah yes af
I ain't lyingggggggg
Screamin' Jay Hawkins was one of those rare artists that didn't give a shit about what people thought. He was just doing his thing, and I love it!
Everyone in production got absolutely hammered and this was the byproduct. Just sheer talent even when shitfaced
DJ's used to decide what got play time back then - so if the music was good, they got more listeners.

@@dc9291 that isn't really true, just a lie they tell people. There was tons of pay for play back then. Lots of cash changed hands.
RIGHT! he knew he had something and he ran with it!
This is still by FAR the best version of this song.
I wouldn't say by "far". Angelina Jordan absolutely CRUSHED this song back when she was only 7. th-cam.com/video/nwFloCPXzCs/w-d-xo.html

Old dude killed it but in my opinion Creedence does the best version of this
Agreed!!
@@4saken404 Kid doesn't even understand the song themes. Saying it's anyway comparable is insulting.
Before Marilyn Manson, Black Sabbath and LED Zeppelin and many other dark bands this guy was first. I can respect that at least. What a pioneer.
Led Zep a dark band???
@@pierresiry1039 yep. You should hear some quotes from the leader of Led Zep about his beloved Satan. Also they sung stairway to heaven. Have you heard it backwards? The pictures they use on their album are angels falling. A fallen Angel isn’t a good one. They signed blood contracts for their fame and popularity.
I mean these things are confirmed and weren’t don’t but accident friend. That’s pretty dark if you ask me. Of course not to Hollywood and show biz. That’s normal to them. Whatever to make money. If you have no morals Hollywood and show biz are the best places to be. Good day to you sir!
