What To Feed Your Ringneck Dove
Ringneck doves don't require a complex diet. I feed mine a parakeet mix. Ringneck doves are soft billed birds so they can not crack seeds like sunflower. Millet and canary seed are the main seeds in this mix.
I have had ringneck doves in the past that loved chopped apples, grapes and chopped greens but these two don't really show any interest. Some doves love a small amount of shredded cheese.
It's also very important that you have fresh water for drinking and the doves should also have access to a bird bath a couple of times a week. Doves have a lot of dander which can be harmful for people with respiratory problems.
I love this! We are Ringneck dove breeders and discovered the shredded cheese treat by doing research. FINALLY there is proof that it's not as weird as it sounds! 🥰 We use cheese to train our birds to fly to us and other people. Works great. You have the best tutorial voice BTW. Very relaxing. Great job!
Thanks for the kind comment. Doves are amazing birds. You have some great videos. I checked them out this morning.
@@DaveSherva Thank you!
Thank you for your helpful video. My ring neck dove is about three years old. It lives in a cage outside and in a cage inside, when it is cold. They are very rare in South Australia. Bloke from Aus. Subscribed.
This is so good to know! Our dove was severely injured as a baby with torn up wings and a hole the size of a quarter on his chest, so deep you could see tendons, muscle, etc. He was still a baby, probably a week or so old, so we gave him shelled peas, rolled oats, and something else (I forgot) with water, in a bag, and fed him that way.
We were going to put him on seeds and started weaning him towards that, but he'd have little seizures and throw up all of his food. Through sheer dumb luck, I read you could put them on ZuPreem Fruit Blend parakeet food and he's been fine ever since. He'll be 2 years old in a couple of months. I'd like to give him a wider food diet, but I'm so afraid to rock the boat. :(
My dove used to like shredded cheese, too. He also loved those millet sprays which they make for parakeets, canaries and finches. It looks like your doves are thinking about making a nest--I see the girl dove with something in her beak at the beginning.
Yep, Kaytee high calcium grit, regular finch/parakeet seed with a lot of millet and treat with mixed veg and fruit bits and seeds. I gave him apple bits once, but never again. He threw it up and I thought he was dying. You don't want to see what they do choking up anything. He is aprox 33 years now give or take one year. The place we bought him went out of business in 1989 and we got him a year or two before they closed. I'll try the cheese, but in very small amounts. The apple thing scared me.
Hi Dave so glad I could find a video like this someone who's in touch with bird side cuz you know people suck.. animals rule people drool.. so I found a baby dove and I need to know how to take care of her she's all alone or he's all alone and we want to keep him or her happy as we can thanks for the shredded cheese.. peas and cooked vegetables... small seed ..soft beak information,🕊️🕊️🕊️😉 lol as you can see I picked up what I need to know please text me as you know your stuff. .. thank you
thank you so much . my dove looks exactly like yours and gets excited listening to the video . but she has very watery output . i will feed her now according to your suggestions . she eats too many sunflower seeds . i let her fly around in the apartment and clean up after her constantly .
I always buy parakeet food because the doves are able to eat all the seeds. Thanks for the comment.
The only experience I have with doves is feeding the wild feral pigeons and morning doves and they LOVE parakeet seed mixes
Hi Dave, my ringneck doves have been showing signs of wanting to breed. What do you recommend I feed them for more calcium?
Hi Dave. Great video and helpful for me as I have a ring neck dove that I care for now. So parakeet blend seed is good? I do leave water out and a bigger shallow basin to bathe in. We have a tractor supply here in AZ they should have the chicken starter mix do you think?
I'd pick up a bag of parakeet seed from Walmart and some millet spray also at Walmart and you are good.
@@DaveSherva will do. Thanks so much
Okay thank you one just landed in my backyard I have parakeets they come and eat I think my cat might have attacked it a little bit it let me pick her up and I put her in a cage I love the way she sings it's so cute wonder when I should let her free again but don't know she was in a tree for a while before I found her in my yard so I don't think she could fly but thank you I've been looking to see what to feed her I got parakeet food she has been eating it though hopefully she'll be okay pretty soon so I could release her back to her natural habitat I'm in California by the way
I give my dove sunflower hearts, safflower and finch mix
Does your dove like any fruits or veggies? Mine just don't.
Dave Sherva I haven't really tried
@@DaveSherva only fruit doves and some species of wild pigeons seem to like fruit
Hi great video. My dove is really picky sometimes even with parakeet and dove/quail blends ( she just picks out the ones she likes). She also likes to eat crumbled donuts or honey buns, but I really want her to eat more of her seeds- I also put bird vitamin her water. Is chicken feed available to buy online? Is it a good idea to start her on that?
Hello Dave do you have any recommendation for seeds at petco or petsmart for a white winged dove ? This video was very helpful thank you
Any of the parakeet seed at Petco or Petsmart. It has mainly milo seeds and other small seeds in it. Walmart has it too. Don't buy parrot food because the doves won't be able to crack the nuts and seeds. Hope that helps.
I have a ring neck dove and it got skinner on just a seed based diet was else can I feed it to make it fat again and healthy?
What is the bag of seed on the left?
Hi Dave,
My ringneck dove has just laid an egg. And I'm pretty sure they are fertile as seen them mating.
But my question was I only want to keep this clutch and what do I do if they breed and I don't want to keep the eggs?
Shall I take them from them on the first day
Thank you
Yes take them on the first day and toss them. I bought 2 wooden eggs from Michael's craft store and I replace the real ones with fake ones. After about 4 days they quit laying on them. If I don't do this my male dove won't shut up.
LOL that is so funny
Have you tried to feeding them pellets instead of seeds I know pellets are much healthier. Also fruits and veggies are great I want them to have a complete diet.
They like watermelon and raspberries and a little cheese every once in a while. I've never tried pellets.
i was wondering if doves should eat pellets thats why i clicked on the video are pellets better for doves i know there a must have for parrots but this is my first time looking into doves
Doves need more seed in their diet than parrots
I just found a ring neck dove in my backyard and it appears to be sick does anyone know what if anything u can do to help it live?
I would watch it and see if it's available to fly. It could be just a young one. Are you sure it's a ringneck and not a mourning dove?
Can you explain what grit is? I’m thinking of getting a couple doves and want to know how to feed them as best as possible. Also, what’s in the chick food that’s good for them? I don’t want to have any issues with egg binding if I have a female. Thanks!!
Grit is ground up rock and stone. Most birds, esp poultry need this to grind up grains in their tummy. Most birdfood contains fine grit. This is why pecking seed off the ground is actually good for pigeons and doves which eat similar food to poultry.
I have ringneck doves, I was just wondering if I has some from birth could I train them to a whistle? and how would I do this?
thanks
Great question. Unfortunately doves don't whistle and are not a bird known for mimicry. You could train your dove to come to you by your whistle. A male parakeet would be a great choice if you want a bird that can talk and mimic whistles. One of the reasons doves are used in magic is because they are quiet. Doves will recognize words and simple commands so I would stick with that and finger training.
Dave Sherva
Thanks for your reply, I meant can you tain a ringneck dove to come to You when you whistle.
but thank you
Do you kniw how doves get along with different types of birds
Hi.
Just found a dove white
It's bald from the back idk if it's a baby or sick
And what can.i feed it..
If you got bird seed I'd start with that. Mine like finely chopped fruit.
Dave Sherva
Just gave it some it's eating fine and with fresh clean water.
Is there anything I can do about the bald spot?
@@cheese9284 Probably got pecked by a crow. Check with a vet about vitamins and oils. Won't hurt to rub some Vit E oil out of a capsule on her bald spot. You want to talk to parrot organizations who have experience with feather plucking and how to fix it.
Are pellets good for doves?
Mine would not eat pellets only seed. I've never seen a pellet food just for doves. I've tried the pigeon pellets with my pigeons but they would not eat it either.
Hello! How much do doves usually cost?
You can buy them off Craigslist for $15 a piece. They breed like crazy so I would not suggest a pair.
Dave Sherva thanks for the response! What age dove would you recommend? I'm 17 years old
I would either start with a young one if possible or a finger trained female. Doves are easy to train so age does not matter that much.
Dave Sherva thank you! I have just one more question: is a dove okay to have as a bedroom pet? I'd like to keep a spacious cage in my room for her so I can always be around her, especially during winter time, but if she's noisy at night I may reconsider
Once it's dark they are quiet. The males are only loud when they have a female to impress. You could certainly keep it in your room. Doves and pigeons produce a lot of dander or feather dust so it's important that the doves have a place to bath. I use a oil pan with about an inch of water in it. Keeps the dust down.
A construction worker just scared the kids that they need to give the dove to him and the kids gave it lol and the construction worker gave it to me its a ringneck too thats why i wanna know what they're eating
