Parkrun is the gateway drug to the sport “it’s just a 5k, can’t hurt you..”. Before you know it they will be signing you up for half marathons😂

Exactly what happened to me, I did couch to 5k (which was actually couch to about 4.3k at my pace) then thought "oh I'll try a Parkrun" - now I've done a half marathon and am training for a 50k 😅

For a part two - Glucose monitors for non-(pre)diabetics (obviously for diabetics it's a life changer) (and hypothetical - if they made one that measured lactacte levels as well?). Heartrate straps. Soft flasks vs hard flasks. Flames/fireworks at finish lines. Kettlebells. Arm sleeves. Gravel/dirt tracks. Wearing your watch during sleep. "Unproductive". Ok, I'll stop now.

Great video (and hilarious editing too). Agree with a lot, and here for Philly to become president of the pockets for women campaign. It’s needed (and not just in sports wear tbh!) Actually New Balance had a pretty decent pocket on a pair of their London Marathon shorts this year. Plus, it saves me having to TELL people I’ve run a marathon 😅 - which coincidentally should probably be on this list too. If you’ve done one, it’s the law. You HAVE to tell EVERYONE!

Love this video! 😂 However, UTMB has to be taken out of the bin. I finally qualified and ran Boston last year and switched to ultra 100 milers since then. I absolutely LOVE the adventure of these big and long trail races. You’re missing out on the adventure but if you’re already successful with road running then I get why you would want to stay there. For me, getting to UTMB is like my holy grail that ranks even above my prior desire to get to Boston. Reconsider… or I will get 1200 people to unfollow you. Hahaha! Totally kidding and totally love your stuff! 🎉

I love trail running, just nicer views on a long run especially hills.
UTMB is a bin for me, as much as I’d love to do the route on my own, I’d never want to pay that company that much money.
I’ve not done it but fell for ‘holy grail’ and did 3 Ironman branded races. The 4th got covid cancelled and that brand has no morals. Don’t they own UTMB? They must be very rich now as deferal policies can get in the bin too 😂. I saw sense and went back to running and cycling to work! Im sure you will love it and big brands do bring a big atmosphere to a location. I’ve clearly just gone anti big brand and prefer low key trail events 😊

As a relative newbie to the running world (only 2 years in) I work in km vs miles because I managed to get into running by using the couch to 5km app (which belongs in PB material). From there I took up parkrun (love the grind) and found strava (love the grind), I still run with my phone (hand held and kinda meh) because running watches are expensive and the choice a bit overwhelming but I think getting one will be PB material. Absolutely love the grind when it comes to my (I'm 29) medal wall (well it's not a wall, it's just one small hanger that I'm trying to fill) because as a newbie runner it motivates me to get better and to keep training.

fully agree with your dislike of holding phones/phone arm bands etc! I generally don't take my phone running; in an otherwise stressful life when I'm running is the one time I don't want to be contacted, nor do I listen to music 99% of the time. I occasionally chuck a ronhill stretchy arm pocket on if I think my sons school might need to call but otherwise it's all about disconnecting!

I loved the vid and I agree with a lot.
But I have a different take on virtual races. I understand where you come from but I love them. I can’t go to races because I’m very easily sensory overloaded and I’m sick very often. With virtual races I can prepare for a race and then race it on my own, on a path I know, with no unfamiliar influences. And if I get sick on race day I can (that happens a lot) I can race two weeks later. I am only a very recreational runner though 😅
I also heard it helps a lot with motivation for people who want to become active. I have a friend who is overweight and had difficulties to stay motivated to walk. She signed up for a challenge where you have to walk or run 100 km in a month. And that motivates her to go for a walk everyday even if she doesn’t feel like it.
But I do think that it is more something for recreational runners then for athletes. And I don’t have to worry about those portable toilets, I can just go at home 🤣

I love the virtual races with coin rewards cos it's the most irl gamification of fitness I've witnessed and it's a fantastic initial motivator.
Intrinsic motivation sometimes doesn't occur in people until they get out and actually see what they're capable first of so if it's getting folks out the door, then I think it's wonderful.

I’m 34 and have a random coat rack next to my bed (from former tenant), so I put my marathon medal and a cute necklace on it during pandemic bc I didn’t have any other decorations…and now it’s become a medal rack 😭 I’m giving myself the ick!! But at least my motive wasn’t “wow look at me,” it was more like “eh might as well make my bedside coat rack useful!”

I don't have a medal wall. I just have my medals in a bag. Having said that, I was thinking of buying one. Basically, my logic is this: what's the point of having them in a bag or a draw where you'll never see them? If you never look at them you might as well throw them away. At least with a wall they're visible.

I agree! I also hung medals to my doorway, as a sort of alarm system. It works! The door jingles, I am alerted, voilà!

Foam roller in the bin?! I struggle enough to get on it as it is and this kind of dangerous misinformation is not needed...
I'll allow it 'cos the rest of the video is funny as and you gave me Keira D'amato.

Sadly the KT tape person is me - it is literally holding me together at times, and never mind the hydration vest, oh and the watch band tan, oh and ........ Not looking good for me!
But at least no phone shoulder holster....... (as my phone is in my hydration vest pocket!)
Love your commentary Phily - pity no post run beers (or 8, like tonight!) being listed though.

Janji make great lightweight shorts for women that have pockets. The normal ones have a nice size zip in the back that can even fit a phone and trail ones that have several pockets/spaces around the belt. Really good quality and an ethical company as well, so worth checking out!

And why would you use a running belt or arm band when you can get leggings and shorts with phone pockets?! Lululemon make heaps of running bottoms with pockets.

Can I suggest we all switch to "lightyears" for our unit for distance? Sounds so much cooler than both mile and meter combined. Although, milemeter does have a nice ring to it as well.

Kt tape is useful in ultras imo. When you have a heavy backpack (for example, got a 50 miler this coming sumday with a hefty mandatory kit list) it can really dig into your shoulders. Kt tape solves that issue
