When Does A Trip Start For You❓🚐 Retired Van Life

- We love cold weather camping and to be totally honest the van does much better in cold weather than it does in hot weather. The batteries can keep us warm and cozy for about 2 days instead of the 3 hours of A/C until they’re drained in hot weather. We love building a fire in the Solo Stove and we love cooking over fires… so cold weather camping just fits us.
In this episode we leave our home, make 2 quick detours to grab our Picco Chairs and walk Maggie at Bass Lake in Blowing Rock and then head up to Old Fort, NC to spend a few nights out in the woods by a stream at Curtis Creek Campground in the Pisgah National Forest.

You forgot to put the slice onions with the potatoes. Try putting your steaks in a zip lock plastic bag with soy sauce & with some Montreal steak seasoning, marinate overnight and the next day cook them over the fire. I think you will like the taste. Rick Lake George, NY

You live in a beautiful area and it was quit cold while we were there.
Really enjoyed your trip. My wife and I stay in Black Mountain on Lake Tomahawk at a B&B called The Arbor House Bed and Breakfast of Black Mountain NC. Really enjoy early morning listening to the ducks and geese and train as it blows it's whistle coming through the mountains there. Thanks again, we thank we'll be making plans to go back there soon.

Good food eaten with joy, what could be better? I’ve got three of those old skillets. When I say old, I mean 100+ years old and so well seasoned. My grandparents set up housekeeping with those skillets they’d gotten from their parents! Nothing beats a cast iron skillet! Cinnamon rolls? You’re glamping!
That’s great that you still have your grandparents old skillets, think of all the meals that have been cooked in them. Priceless! I agree we are glamming.
@@VANTREKKINGlifestyle My grandparents owned a small restaurant that specialized in outdoor rotisserie cooked ham, beef, and pork. These pans were used every day for reheating those amazing meats (for 15¢ sandwich’s!) and deep frying freshly cut fries. My job, when I was 6 or 7, was scrubbing and cutting the fries. I stood on a stool to reach the counter. 😉 Happy, happy times!

Another great video. Nothing earth shattering in it but just SO, SO good. You capture the moment so well and I am always learning new places and ideas from you. I go back and rerun your older videos whenever I am thinking about a place. BTW, that trip would be totally doable in an EKKO. We have one on order and are expecting delivery in mid-Feb, coming from a 25 foot Airstream for greater mobility. Saw that you are now a member of the FB group. It is extremely active and informative.
Owen definitely has his eye on the EKKO and you are correct this trip could have been do in an EKKO for sure. However we love the Airstream but definitely understand having greater mobility. Can’t wait to hear what you think about your EKKO, please keep us updated.

A touque on a kooque? I have one of those recycled rugs, looks like little hollow strings/straws. It’s great here in Florida. All the sand and water just falls through the rug. Keeps sand out of the rv. Rain just passes through.

Lynn, I actually rolled on the couch after Owen put puppy pickles in his pocket and said they can be used as hand warmers. I know no one else except Owen that could pull that off. I’ve always wondered about cinnamon rolls in the air fryer. I love mine and for me it is worth it if only for frozen tater tots. Haha. Yum.
I love tater tots too. Owen prefers French fries so I have to sneak them in. The cimmamon rolls work great I cook them on 320 for 8 mins and turn the half way.

Hey you two. I just came across your video here and noticed something we've been wondering about. I just bought a van and had suggested to my wife that we build some kind of dog bed between our seats. I noticed you had one in your van and was hoping you could enlighten me as to where you got it. We want one so bad !! Thank you
Glad you found us. We use an Engel cooler with a small dog bed on top of it. Our Andersen Levelers have a part that fits under them that we use to put under the back side of the cooler to make it level. The cooler is in our Amazon store (www.amazon.com/shop/VanTrekkingLifestyle) but just about any cooler that size you can pick up on sell will work. And you can keep dry goods or clothes in there so it serves at least double purpose.
We enjoy our Sundays with ya'll! It is like visiting with good friends! Thank you for the cooking episodes especially your happy dance! Thank you for sharing your camping ideas!

We lived in Black Mountain for 18 years and still miss it. It was great to see it through your eyes. We have walked around Lake Tomahawk many times. Oh man, I could almost smell Ole Guacamoles! Thanks for the memories.

My husband was actually looking at this campground yesterday. (We were slowly driving back to Knoxville from Congaree National Park.) Fall colors are beautiful! Think your Revel is shorter than your Travato was. Do you miss the extra length? Do you think it’s easier to drive? I want the longer van but wondering if the shorter would be sufficient.
The Revel is shorter but it does drive better. We had Travato K and it was very open on the inside with all the windows on both sides. There are things we like about both vans… it always hard to choose which of those thing are more important.

That’s how we cook steak because we haven’t found a grill yet. Steak and potatoes sounds so good. I liked that you can cook cinnamon rolls in that air fryer. That’s so nice. It seemed easy too. We have really enjoyed cooking on the skillet on this trip especially since we’ve had a fire each night, it’s just hard to control the heat. Cinnamon rolls is one of Owen’s favorites so I’m glad we found a way to make them on the road. Plus the Air Fryer is great for so many things. We appreciate you following along.
We LOVE Black Mountain. We stayed at the KOA near there in May. We missed the trail you walked, but really enjoyed the Catawba Falls trail. We ate at the same Mexican restaurant. Very good! Of course, Kilwin’s Ice Cream is always a treat too. Thanks for the memories. That trip was pre-van for us. Although we had a camping trailer, we opted for the tent. 🚐🌮🍦

Good morning, loved this outing. Camping during the shoulder season can be so satisfying and peaceful. Your storage solutions were very creative. Maggie so thoughtful looking out for Owen LOL. My dogs will not lay on my outdoor mat either, I have to put another rug on top of it. I have to agree with the cinnamon roll thing. I take em when ever we camp and I know the mornings may get nippy, a favorite at the Antique Engine and Tractor Show in Buckley, MI. Although it is held mid August in northern MI, those sweet rolls serve two fold. They warm up the rv are sooo good. Oh, hey, my mom use to call her cap a “chook” safe travels 🐕❤️🇺🇸🙋🏼♀️
It’s hard to get Maggie to lay where we want her to, she seems to have a mind of her own, she has two beds at home and never uses them unless it’s after her bath and that’s because I want let her on the furniture. We so appreciate your comment and following along on our travels.

I’m sorry I’m just now responding, my coat is Columbia. I got it at one of the outlet stores. I like because of the length since I wear a lot of tunic tops the coat over them well.

Yep! That’s a perfect day in our book too! Neat to cook in the skillet over the fire. Hey, I make chocolate cake in the mini Instant Pot we carry in our Revel-Can’t believe that’s even a thing! (Liked your good music choices 😊)

I have the Solo stove and a Vortex air fryer, now I need a Revel to put them in! Should arrive in about a month. How cold did it get? Have you winterized your Revel yet? Thanks for a great video. You’ll love your new Revel when it arrives. That’s awesome! We came from a Promaster too and there will be things about that you miss for sure but you’ll love the Sprinter if you’re like us. It got down to 28f one night. We have never winterized the Revel in the year we’ve had it. On coldest nights we keep it plugged in and keep the heater on its lowest setting. It’s never been an issue. But… we head to warmer weather each January so we only have a few weeks of “cold” weather.
Stayed there about a year ago and it is a beautiful place in the fall. Really enjoy your videos and looking forward to more!

The Blackstone is so much more versatile. But since we already have a fire it does make since to use it, however it is hard to control the temp.

There are so many things you can do with an Air Fryer. I cook the cinnamon rolls on 320 for 8 mins and turn them half way through and they turn out prefect every time. Thanks for letting us know you liked Owen’s song, much appreciated/
Owen, I have used the hell out of my 17" griddle and now WALMART has a Black Friday Sale, available NOW for the 22" with bag and hardtop for $117. I heard someone saw it in the store for $99 but I don't think it had all of the pieces. Love the cooking parts too. KEEP ON TREKKING !!

Wow! We love Black Mountain, our daughter and son in law live there. We have hiked around that lake many times, and the view of seven sisters is spectacular. We will actually be there Thanksgiving week. Great video!

We keep it in the back of the van. There is part of the video that we show the back of the van with the ottomans and we show the solo store between the long ottoman and the refrigerator it may be hard to see. It comes with a bag that helps to keep things cleaner.
Have to agree…poop in your pocket to warm your hands is pretty gross…
I try to tell Owen not to do things like that but we just want listen… he’s just a kid at heart.

Hi guys, thanks! I’ve picked up a lot of tips from you already, even though I’m still waiting for my van. Including the Pico chair and solo stove. I love it!! Hey I wonder if Maggie would like the Elevated Pet bed, which collapses and doesn’t take up a lot of space. It’s fabric and mesh in the middle, almost like a hammock. I got one for my pups and plan on bringing it. They like it in the back yard so far :) (love seeing the cold weather camping as well)

Puppy pickles are not hand warmers Owen 😂😂. Love the cast iron cooking, I’ve been watching videos on it. Learning about camp fire cooking. My wife says I’m nuts to consider doing it but we will see. Nice camp spot 👍🏼
We both like the cast iron cooking especially if you already have a fire. We did it several times on this trip. Have you every watch Kent Rollins, he great.

It is an EcoRug from Lowe’s. It’s the one that is $22.98. After this last multi-leg trip we used it just about every stop and it held up great and folded up even better each time. Hope this helps.

where does Maggie ride when you're on the road? Do you buckle her in for safety or does she sit on passenger's lap?
I hate to say this because I know we need to buckle Maggie in, but we have a cooler in between the seats with a dog bed so when Maggie is not sitting in my (Lynn’s) lap she lays in her bed. I’m not sure we could retrain her after 7 years. But we should probably try.
