Pulling up to the parking lot, you’ll find a small state park ranger station, where you’ll have to pay $7 for parking.
Follow the Hunter Trail, which starts gradually going up steps toward the rocky mountain.
Pretty quickly, the trail will get steeper, and it’ll be lined with railings embedded into the rocks to help you up.
You’ll find some caves and shady spots to cool off in along the way, but for the most part, you’re out in the elements.
From the top of Picacho Peak, you can see the I-10 heading northwest, toward Casa Grande and Phoenix, and southeast toward Tucson.
Picacho Peak is famous for its wildflower blooms in the late spring.
A warning about summer hiking: In addition to the extreme heat, the monsoon often sends strong thunderstorms through the area which can be dangerous for hikers.
