I don't think the yeti will ever be fixed. Like you said, Park Operations might not be willing to put potentially 4-5 figures into a minute part of not just a ride, but only one of two E-ticket attrations of Animal Kingdom. People probably go to Animal Kingdom just for Expidition Everest. Closing that down for an extended period of time would more than likely drop consumer migration for that park as it only has a small amount of rides at this point in time.

They need to install a platform on tracks leading into Yeti area. You would replace the current yeti with two new yetis. Each stabilized on their own platform. They would swap each other out weekly for maintenance. Just like roller coasters have extra carts. The cool thing about this idea is each yeti could have different programmed movements. Also the yetis would be assembled on their platform before construction so the refurbishment time would only need to be for the track installation. Unfortunately since Animal Kingdom is lowest attended park, they need to keep every thrill ride open to spread the crowds. Wouldn’t be surprised if they did fix it after Universal opens since attendance will be lower or wait til all the expansions in AK are done so guests have more options.
What I have always wondered is why in the world the made the animatronic so dang heavy to begin with. Surely they could’ve accomplished a figure that big with that much movement but made out of super lightweight materials…..at least light enough to where it wouldn’t require the force of a jet engine to make the thing move, right? Have the yeti itself essentially be a lightweight sort of “puppet” and put all of the heaviest hydraulic and mechanical parts off to the side on a very well-supported, overengineered structure. Carbon fiber skeleton, lightweight hair, etc… who knows. All we do know is that basically every issue the figure has is because of its weight and power. I would also assume that because they knew beforehand how much force they would have to use to power a 25 foot-tall yeti built out of things like steel and heavy hydraulic lines, they probably designed its hydraulic pumps and things to be way more than powerful enough to move the ultra heavy figure as desired and subsequently didn’t necessarily see the massive weight of the figure being an issue or worry about the weight of the figure as much because a heavier figure would, in theory, produce more lifelike movement and make the yeti seem like a real giant animal that is alive, so if that is the case then obviously that came back to bite them in the end. It seems they thought of it as, “well, we’re designing this thing with the ability to power a figure even bigger than the one we have, so who cares how heavy it is; our pumps and things can handle it, and the massive weight will just make it look more lifelike.” Obviously that turned out to bite them in the end. Idk, am I just seriously overestimating how much lighter the figure could have been made?
@@genericman-j9u yes it was 2005, but the giant King Kong animatronic on the original Universal ride (a figure which was actually designed by Bob Gurr, funnily enough) was even bigger than the yeti and it never had any major issues as far as I know. Obviously that figure doesn’t move nearly as much as the yeti, but the yeti wasn’t _entirely_ unprecedented in terms of giant ape-like animatronics lol. I have also read that the computer program they used to design the ride, which was brand new at the time, had some fundamental flaws in how it calculated things, so that obviously was part of it as well. I know it’s easy to say these things in hindsight, but it is a bit strange to think that they didn’t have the foresight to make absolutely sure that they’d avoid issues like these to begin with. Luckily, though, I actually did get to experience the full A-Mode yeti once back in January of 2007, so that’s pretty cool. I personally would not at all be upset if they had to close the ride for a year or more to fix the yeti at this point. It does seem increasingly unlikely that that will ever happen, though. At least leave the yeti’s A-Mode lights (not strobe) on so you can actually get a look at how dang big he is. Even if he wasn’t moving and no strobe light was partially concealing him, being able to take in the sheer size of the thing would be much more intimidating and cool than barely catching a glimpse of him through the strobe light. Who knows, though. Maybe one of these days they actually will fix it. Also, if you have never seen it, there’s a video of an “urban explorer” guy sneaking into the ride after the park had closed and filming the yeti (with all the lights turned on) for several minutes that is super cool to see. Probably a couple new technologies and upgrades (or combinations) that would work. I’m pretty certain I can fix this without too much trouble. Definitely wouldn’t require rebuilding the mountain or even a single long closure. Might not even be as costly as they’re thinking. Would love to take a crack at that.

This is a super informative video! I'm fascinated with expedition everest and specifically the yeti animatronic and have been for years but I still learnt a lot from this video. Great job! 👏
The sad reality is that the Disney that would prioritize fixing something like this was long dead before the attraction even opened. It was dead before most of us were even born. Like you said, it’s all about “projected ROI”. They tried to make the existing design work, but they couldn’t. They would have to design and build a new figure, and with how expensive the original Yeti was, that’s not getting approved.
Love seeing the full movement set with the lights on! It's so amazing to watch. I was always surprised that they never reprogrammed him to just have more minimal movement when they realized there was an issue. He could just hover over the track, slightly moving and roaring, instead of furiously swiping at the cars, and it would still be an amazing experience.
I sure hope they fix the yeti someday! They added the hatbox ghost animatronic to the haunted mansion, so they see value in animatronic details. Why not fix the yeti? I know it’s expensive probably. But it makes the ride so special! I think the yeti would bring additional guests to the park. Perhaps it could be part of a whole marketing campaign. Rebirth of the ride or something. Thanks for the great video!
i remember so vividly the yeti being in full function when i rode in 2014. might be misremembering but i swear his arm went right over the ride vehicle.
Honestly, they could make a lightweight body with the original exterior shell and then just run it like a marionette on cables. You pass by the thing so fast, that an average person probably wouldn't even notice. And at least it would move around again.
Not a terrible idea really. The cables could be masked by "vines" hanging from the caves roof lining. Some moving lighting effects could help make it lifelike too.
I feel like if the yeti repair were actually fast, they would have done it already. Since they haven't, I feel like it's going to be more involved than that.
Still dead stiff to this day. It was the HEAVIEST animatronic ever made. Almost brought the whole mountain down. Meaning it just got too big for its britches.
I could see after a Tropical Americans is open, they get the ball rolling in Everest. They'll be enough for traffic balanced in the park between Teop & Avatar they could sneaky fix it
I honestly think the whole ride needs more than a fixed yeti. It needs a new track. I went on it last year and it was so rough a bumpy it not only hurt my back, but made me throw up. I never throw up on rides EVER. That experience was the second time I went on it, and the first time I went on, it was a great ride experience. I hope it gets the refurbishment it needs one day, but I won’t be able to ride it again until they fix that major issue. It would be cool to see the yeti move, so I do hope it gets fixed.
It's like everything else in the parks attraction. Once a major prop breaks down, Disney has some kind of issues with getting it working again. Example, the guns on the Rise hasn't worked in over two years. Some of the props in Indy. The cups that turn on a rope on Adventureland treehouse. Hopefully oneday they will come back to life.
Thank you so much for doing all this research!!! I’m surprised they haven’t thought to replace it yet with all the new technology we have since 2006 or if they have thought to why they haven’t done it yet?
I remember I was riding the ride a Few weeks ago And I was a Little disappointed that it wasn't moving like it was in 2006 my sister said it was amazing back them hopefully they fix the yeti It would be so cool to see it back in full Animation mode!
Good video. Not going back to DisneyWorld until they fix the Yeti. Pretty sure they could reduce the stresses with lighter composite materials available.
GREAT VIDEO and very interesting about the rumors we’ve all heard! At this point, I don’t believe it will ever be fixed because it’s not effecting the ride’s popularity, in fact, Disco Yeti is probably helping since it’s a well known thing! I’ve never ridden it, and I definitely want to ride someday to see Disco Yeti, even if I can’t see A mode yeti! 😎 poor Joe Rohde, this will sadly be his legacy! 😢
How about a video about the timeline of Universal Studios Florida in Orlando, Florida on TPM Vids? It has rides and attractions that have come and gone over the years since it opened in 1990.
Now that nearly 20 years has past, they could probably build one that isn't so heavy. But Disney rarely thinks it's worth it to spend that much money on something you'll see for a few seconds.
I worked at Everest in the beginning. When a mode was routine. It has always saddened me when we went to permanent B mode. I remember giving tours where we we go in the control tower and show the yeti moving on a camera to guests and they would be amazed. I knew the maintenance crew well and they tried everything they could to fix the problem but unfortunately this video is right. It will cost a significant amount to fix the beast but operations isn’t willing to pay. I love this attraction and it was a fun place to work during the 7 years I was there. Maybe one day this will be fully operational again but I won’t hold my brwath
I would love to see the Yeti fixed. It would be an epic comeback and probably become even more popular. As well as more terrifying at having him come at you during the ride. One thing I'm concerned about with B mode Yeti is those strobe lights and people who have photosensitive epilepsy and might have an issue with those lights.
Thank you! This was a very informative video! I always believed the foundation issue was true and was very surprised to learn it's actually always been the animatronic itself that is the problem. I think the solution is to replace the Yeti with a new model. I feel like with the advances in the technology they could create one now that would be lighter and more durable and thus not prone to the same problems. They could also slightly decrease his size if necessary. I doubt anyone would care if he's a tiny bit smaller if he actually worked as intended! LOL. Disco Yeti just plain sucks and the fact that the proper A mode Yeti only lasted a year or two is frankly unacceptable. Such a waste of an incredible animatronic! It's an embarrassment to a company that has created the greatest theme parks the world has ever seen.
Honestly, the hardest part is that everest is an incredible and breathtaking ride- best coaster I've ever been on- even without the yeti. I can see why they are reluctant to fix him, when guests are so thrilled by the ride as it is. Still I hope they do. WDW makes such an effort to make every detail of their park perfect for guests, this seems like a glaring oversight.
If the thing that is holding Disney back from fixing the Yeti is it not being worth the money, then they should know that they could just hype it up with as much publicity about it as possible which would likely lead to an increase in guest numbers. If they were to also add more special effects to the ride, like Big Thunder, that could further draw more people to the park to come ride.
People would TOTALLY show up to support the fixed yeti. Especially as it's been an issue for soooo long and so many ppl care. I have no doubt it'd be monetarily worth it.
I gotta say, the first time I clicked on this video I went, "Wasn't this already a video?" until I watched the full thing, and it's interesting to see that most of all of that was a rumor- wow Is kinda funny that people in the comments are saying "finally! a video on the yeti!" like the other one never existed ...but fair, I looked at the date and that was 7 years ago- I myself haven't been here for that long but I always love looking back at the old content TPM has to offer

This was an awesome video, I really enjoyed it!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
i remember so vividly the yeti being in full function when i rode in 2014. might be misremembering but i swear his arm went right over the ride vehicle.
This was a much needed surprise of a video thanks TPM
After seeing Deadpool & Wolverine, I laughed so hard when Wade mentioned the Yeti getting fixed.
when was this?
@@ahmetcanylmaz5028 At D23
@@ahmetcanylmaz5028During last year's D23
We got people who want the Yeti fixed and then we got people who want the People Mover back... Maybe they don't know which one to fix first lol
Love your videos man
When I rode Everest a few weeks ago the yeti had the a mode lighting
No way! So you got a nice clear look at the yeti then?
@@TPMvids yup I also was able to ride Everest with the lights on
If Disney made an announcement saying everest will be closed for 2 months for yeti repairs, opening day there will have insane numbers!
Another fantastic and detailed video 👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you
I can’t believe you haven’t talked about this in seven years thank you for talking about it again
WOW 3 MINUTES!! Disco yeti for life! Great vid tpm I was always told it was foundation!!!!
Still dead stiff to this day. It was the HEAVIEST animatronic ever made. Almost brought the whole mountain down. Meaning it just got too big for its britches.
TPM vids it too good 👍
Good Lord that yeti is MASSIVE! What a beast of an animatronic! My mom remembers it moving, and I hope to see it move in person someday!
You wont
We'll get you Disneyland Tiana's fails soon as they get open 😊 1:10
One of the best videos I've seen on this channel. 👍🏻
Thank you so much! Means a lot
I’ve loved your channel for the last six years and I’m finally going to Disney World
We just need one really rich guy who loves it enough to slap the money down.
This video cleared up alot of rumors. Great video all around
I could see after a Tropical Americans is open, they get the ball rolling in Everest. They'll be enough for traffic balanced in the park between Teop & Avatar they could sneaky fix it
11:09 I did one of these in 2018, it was so cool!
Who cares if it’s a lengthy process and you need to rip parts of the mountain off? Fix that damn Yeti, Disney!!
Also love your work
It's like everything else in the parks attraction.
Disney imagineers were and still are very good at foreseeing issues with their ideas and then getting ahead if them. It’s a shame they missed this one
16:46 That's a poor excuse because they could spend millions of dollars building new lands but yet they won't fix their own rides
They cant fix it
Because priorities.
The great video tpm! Keep it up!
I’ve always been intrigued by the yeti and his lore!!! I really hope he gets fixed!!
How about a video about the timeline of Universal Studios Florida in Orlando, Florida on TPM Vids? It has rides and attractions that have come and gone over the years since it opened in 1990.
YESSSSS TPM UPLOADED NEW VID ❤❤
Fascinating facts, TPM VIDS!🎉
They needed to fix Yeti. For now Disco Yeti!
Now that nearly 20 years has past, they could probably build one that isn't so heavy. But Disney rarely thinks it's worth it to spend that much money on something you'll see for a few seconds.
I’m a huge fan 👍
Ya me tooooo!!!
For some reason I recall the scene of "A Goofy Movie" with the busted sparking animatronics in Lester's Possum Park 😅
I'd like to think that after AK gets the Tropical Americas retheme and its 3(?) rides, they'll finally fix the yeti... but ik thats super unlikely
I got to see it in A mode as a kid and it scared me but was so awesome!
Top notch documentation of Disco Yeti™!!
Maybe they should hide the yeti with a screen of the yeti
this may be irrelevant but does Rohde earlobe gets a lot of strain with that many piercings and rings and does it hurt him
A Joe Rohde earring comment is never irrelevant. It’s just as iconic as Joe himself
Congrats on 1M I knew you could do it
Honestly, the hardest part is that everest is an incredible and breathtaking ride- best coaster I've ever been on- even without the yeti.
@@maep6422 Especially if Disney does advertising to the GP, they would get tons of guests.
Can you do hatbox Ghost next?
I love what you do
Hii love your vids
I gotta say, the first time I clicked on this video I went, "Wasn't this already a video?" until I watched the full thing, and it's interesting to see that most of all of that was a rumor- wow
Is kinda funny that people in the comments are saying "finally! a video on the yeti!" like the other one never existed
...but fair, I looked at the date and that was 7 years ago- I myself haven't been here for that long but I always love looking back at the old content TPM has to offer
When I went on the ride in 2016, I didn’t even see him! Didn’t even know he was there until afterwards!
