    VIDEO NOTES
(feel free to correct/add more notes/information)
Skin already has natural moisturizers but this is an external factor that helps. TEWL=Transdpidermal waterloss. TEWL is when the enviroment becomes too hot so the body naturally releases water from within to hydrate. Because it's so hot, the water evaporates off our skin. This in turn gets to the lipids under our building blocks (corniocytes), breaking them apart and making our skin dry. Moisturizers are a protective layer on top of our skin that keep TEWL from happening. If you have oily skin, your oils will mass produce to try to keep your skin hyrdated. This in turn causes you to have more acne.
    Types of skin moisturizers
    • Occlusives: Help trap moisture in skin
    • Emollients: soften, protect moisturize, and lubricate (Like conditionair for your hair, but for your skin)
-Examples: jojoba oil, squalene, cetyl alcohol
    • Humectants: Moisturizers that help young skin cells emerge to the surface/reduce flakes
-Examples: glycerin, lactic acid, and honey
    HOW TO PROPERLY USE MOISTURIZER:
Use after cleansing, toning, essencing, eye cream, and seruming.
Use a peanut/cashew size amount and dot it all over face. Massage using circular upward motions starting with cheeks (cheeks are the driest part of the face because the skin is thin due to close approximation of eyes). Once done, pat excess moiturizer from hands onto face using cupping method.
Moisturizers come in 4 different types:
■GELS (thinest consistency): best for oily skin, not for dry skin. Gels are lightweight, thin, and soak quickest into skin.
■LOTION: Thicker texture than gels but are still good for oily skin because they are mostly made up of water and some oil. They go deeper into the skin than gels do. Contain Emollients and Humectants.
■CREAMS: Can be interchangeable with lotion, just have to feel consistentcy. Creams are thicker, and stay on top of the skin longer than lotions and gels.
■OINTMENTS: Considered Occlusives. These deter TEWL by 98%, but probably not good for oily skin because it'll make you look more oily and causing more breakouts
BEST FOR OILY SKIN: AHA (chemical exfoliant), hyaluronic acid (HA), retinols, niacinimide, AHA BHA PHA help control oil.
    Recommendations:
▪Some by mi 30 day AHA BHA PHA Miracle cream. Has Centela: calming and good for inflammation (acne prone) it is not greasy, not too thick, fast absorbing
▪Ole Henrikson balancing moisturizer $34 (very thin, watery consistency)
    ▪ Origins Genzing gel moisturizer $30 (Heavier than Ole Henrikson, better for winter)
▪L'occitane Ultra Thirst Quenching gel $29 (thinner, and more lightweight than Ole Henrikson, not sticky. Absorbs instantly)
    BEST FOR ALL SKIN TYPES
    Recommendations:
▪The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA $8 (Cream, thicker consistency, sits on top of skin leaving kind of a white film)
    BEST FOR COMBINATION SKIN
Combination skin is a result of dehydrated skin. Can use a cocktail of dry and oily skin products that cater to problem areas.
    Recommendations:
All of the Recommendations for oily skin including
    ▪ Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion $14
▪Cerave Daily Moisturizing Lotion $14 (containes HA and cerimides [locks in moisture]) Probably not good for dry skin because it's not hydrating enough
    ▪Laroche-Posay Daily Moisturizing Cream $34
    ▪ COSRX Centella Blemish Cream $15. Contains Centella Asiatica which is an antioxidant rich herb that calms and reduces acne marks and scars. Richer than other creams but not like for dry skin.
    BEST FOR DRY SKIN
People with dry skin don't produce as much oil and sebum like people with oily skin do. Look for thicker creams and ointments that have ingredients like HA, Glycerin, and ceramides. These ingredients help keep skins protective barrier intact.
    BEST FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Look for products that are simple, have few ingredients, no fragrance, no BHA's, and no AHA's
    Recommendations:
    ▪ Cetaphil
    ▪ Dermalogica
    ▪ Laroche-Posay
    BEST FOR NORMAL SKIN
If skin is not necessarily dry or oily but is breaking out, look for products that have HA, niacinamide and antioxidants.
    Recommendations:
    ▪Keil's Ultra Facial Moisturizer $21
    WHEN TO SWITCH IT UP
When skin starts to change-if it is drier or more oily than normal, you know you're using too heavy of a cream, or not Moisturizing enough.
Pay attention to weather, temperature or climate. Use lightweight moisturizers in the summer to account for more sweat/oil production. In winter use thicker more hydrating creams to keep skin hydrated. If you feel like your face is getting a little more congested, use products that have salicylic acid (BHA) and AHA (help shed dead skin)

natalye naticorn Go to Sephora and sample the ole henriksen banana bright eye cream. I use tarte shape tape concealer which is on the dry side and prepping my eyes with this cream first keeps my concealer smooth all day. It is the only eye cream I’ve found to work well with makeup and I’ve tried many. Usually the makeup will slip and slide but not with this one. I like the Bobbi brown or Charlotte Tilbury in the evening because they are very hydrating and don’t sting or irritate my eyes. The one in the gold or brown pots from Missha work well too but I have to order those online.

I’d also like to know what eye creams/serums are good for your eyes whether you have dry or oily under eyes and eye lids; and what ones are good for under makeup! Hi Felicia,
Typically facial device that measures skin hydration does so by capacitance, or pretty much how much electricity is conducted through the chip (sensor). So in one way or another, it is also affected by what product is on your skin!
A tip to have a more fair and accurate measurement would be to moisturize half a face for a 3 days, and then compare the data for both sides on clean, washed face. Because, applying moisturiser on your face would definitely increase the hydration reading due to that extra layer of product to conduct electricity. Also, the pressure applied during measurement should be similar and it wouldn't be fair to measure after a few hours of product application as the sebum produced on both halves, again, is uneven, and would affect the readings.
Sorry, I'm a science student and I've learnt these skills from my internship recently, so I thought I'd share them with you guys 😅. Love your videos and thanks for uploading such informative videos on skincare! I've started using AHAs/BHAs and Vitamin C thanks to you guys and my skin has really cleared up hehehe! 💕💕💕
Edit: And thanks for incorporating all the scientific information in your videos because they really help make things so much clearer for users!!

I know it's kinda late but i think it didn't really matter since moisturizer is more kind of a sealant. Some of its goes inside the skin but most of it stay in the surface. So i think this method is more correct rather than using a long term usage since they just want to know the different of using it or not. Not specifically wanting to know the effect of the products itself.

Follow Dr. Dray. Alcohol as a bad ingredient only goes so far.. a small percentage of alcohol isn’t necessarily bad because of its small percentage. Genefique is mostly hylaronic acid & bifidus extract. Hylaronic adds and retains moisture and prevents transepidermal water loss. Bifidus extract is for cellular respiration & renewal which helps to brighten & diminish old skin cells from creating texture on the skin. It also has a protein for brightness... Alcohol in products is also used as a binding agent to bind certain ingredients together. So I wouldn’t always listen to the myth that alcohol is always bad in skincare products.

I try hot compresse with teabags but doesnt seem to work anymore and they used to come to a head. Now they dont. What do you do when you have them???

Don't use foaming cleansers according to Nerida Joy. I would try something non irritating but you can use oils on acneic skin. I would look for a moisturiser that is unscented and basic. You could try cerave sa to start. It has salycilic in it or look at the toleraine line. Lactic acid can be moisturising as well.

After cleansing and toning my skin, I use either a gel moisturizer with charcoal (for the acne) or a basic cream moisturizer with spf (like the one cerave has) ...and then I put on PURE GLYCERIN. It's been a game changer for my skin. I even mix a few drops with my body lotion if I want/need more moisture there (usually my calves and shoulder blades get really dry).

  • @Triumvirate3

Per Dr. Dray, humectants have to be applied to your wet face after cleansing. Since they usually have Hyaluronic Acid, that helps keep the water on your face to prevent transepidermal water loss, and to prep the skin for a layer of occlusive moisturizer, which traps the necessary water. This is all for the purpose of maintaining your skin’s moisture barrier, which exists to protects the inner layers of skin. Our skin is our largest organ and requires protection, which is what the moisture barrier is. No matter what skin type you have, you need a good humectant and occlusive moisturizer (without problematic ingredients such as alcohol denat., citrus, fragrance, menthol, and essential oils). If you have oily skin like me, you can use a very emollient moisturizer without exacerbating the problem. This is because your sebum production is triggered by your brain, which is receiving signals that your skin is dry. I reversed my oiliness by regularly using salicylic acid, specifically the Paula’s Choice 4% BHA serum. It’s very possible that any well formulated BHA will help achieve this, but that’s the one I’ve found helps me. I highly recommend Dr. Dray’s videos to anyone who seriously wants to help their skin. She’s a licensed dermatologists and her advice is a Godsend.

Beauty Within make sure to note what to avoid if you have fungal acne! For others who may have it

    What about the FAB line?
I think i have that combo skin issue. The dehydration. But i moisturize twice a day and have tried gels to creams (ive been using aveeno ultra calming lotion with spf for a long time). I tried cliniques line of creams for night time hydration but it was too thick. I use it only for dry spots now. Gels are way to light for my skin. I dont necessarily have oily skin but my forehead will have a sheen to it in the morning. My nose and chin only a little. My cheeks arent really dry or oily. I also have sensitive skin so retinols or harsh chemicals dont work for me. I think lotion is the best and sometimes i need something heavier for the creases of my nose or dry patches on my forehead. Or when im trying to attack a cyst and the first layer of skin is going through hell with the benzoyl peroxide. I think i moisturize enough but i dont drink enough water. How much water do you ladies drink?
An eye cream tutorial would be great too. Im using It cosmetics bye bye undereye but it does nothing. Still have dark circles and the skin doesnt stay hydrated. But anything thicker i might break out.
Also back to face moisturizers, im using FABs ultra repair cream at night. It seems to be good. Its not thick like i thought it would be because its for dry parched skin. I wouldn't label my skin dry.
I used andalou 1000 roses day cream for sensitive skin and its way too light. Even for the day time.
I don't regularly use serums either. The ones i look at are pricey and i dont know what to get yet. Occasionally i use mario badescu vitamin c serum at night.
