Hello guys welcome back to another video. In this video we will be checking out the Substrate Material Examples, in the newly updated content examples project (found on the epic games launcher). This includes Substrate Materials such as the Opal material we saw in the Unreal Engine 5.2 GDC demo. There is a lot of info to break down in the content examples, so I recommend checking out the project for yourself.
If you don't know what Substrate is, it's essentially Unreal Engine's new flagship material system. It is set to replace the current system we have. The main difference between Substrate is that you can have layered materials with different shading models, which allow for more realistic results. Results that were previously impossible to create with the legacy material system.

Yeah that wet sand material on a beach scene would be cool to see implemented, and if the oscillation of the water layer (and it’s wetness) could be driven by the engine’s water system.

I would love to see you cover more substrate stuff, it seems really exciting to me.. I'd love to create some kind of translucent slime shader for like and alien slime monster or rpg slime creature in substrate, I think that would be really cool.

so substrate is basically like blender shader editor where you can mix different shaders. kindof?

It's like Mix Material or Layered/Blend Material where you can mix different materials, not like shader editor lol, shader editor is the whole window where you put nodes and the nodes themselves.
