- Former IDF paratrooper, and Breaking the Silence executive director, Avner Gvaryahu, spoke with Christiane Amanpour on CNN a few days ago on how the horrific reality in the Gaza Strip is what we’ve seen in the past, but on steroids, and how the videos of IDF soldiers circulating on social media for months are only a symptom of a much bigger problem.

It’s because there have been reports that news rooms in some mainstream publications have been revolted with the way the paper/channel they work for has been covering things. I believe the Washington Post, NYT and CNN have been the ones where we have seen articles written about how the writers and reporters feel about how this is being covered and some like Christiana are able to speak out or have guests like this on because of seniority, which is what more of them should be doing or resigning in protest. It’s a painfully slow movement but at least it’s moving in the right direction.

He was a sniper who broke into Palestinian homes, , aka using *them* as humans shields by sitting on their rooftop terraces and sniping/shooting other Palestinians. Got it. Can you imagine the feeling of revenge of the Palestinian children who have witnessed the slaughter of their parents siblings, aunts, uncles, granparents and friends. I don’t necessarily agree that the videos are just a symptom of the problem. I think they are also an indicator of just how bad things are, how dehumanized the Palestinians are and how much that view is being pushed within the IDF.

I feel an oportunity was missed here. A question asking him directly how he feels about Is ra els apartied?. About how he would feel if he was a palestinian...losing their land? Under seige walled in? Would he resist if he was Palestinian? What about the Nakba? Has he ever took a dna test? Does he belong to that land? I am very disappointed in CNN for this sterile interview.

If you read past his words, he is also looking for self-preservation. All of the soldiers on this series are doing the same. He knows trying to stop now that the world knows is his best chance, but even more, I would hope the new experience of fatherhood is helping to change him. They have been indoctrinated from such a young age to think like this - 6 months isn't that long of a time to shift as much as we'd like him to.
But it's a start, although it does not absolve them of their war crimes.

Breaking the Silence is an organization of veteran soldiers who have served in the Israeli military since the start of the Second Intifada and have taken it upon themselves to expose the public to the reality of everyday life in the Occupied Territories. Their TH-cam says "We endeavor to stimulate public debate about the price paid for a reality in which young soldiers face a civilian population on a daily basis, and are engaged in the control of that population’s everyday life. What about the Great Catastrophe for the past 76 years that the Palestinians have had to endure for generations at the hands of the zionist regime, the endless occupation, the stealing of their lands, which BTW, is still continuing, the trauma, etc. What about those? Can you talk about those issues as well?
Also, once again for CNN anchor Ms. Christiane Amanpour and the CNN network itself, pretending to care for justice for the Palestinians, but were still talking about the Hamas terrorists!

Gaza has taught me that I was wrong. The using of a 1st world military ( provided by my gov’t) ; tanks and net aircraft and bunker buster bombs used to masacre the innocent children of Gaza. Children and mothers being snipered in the head. Cutting off food, water & electricity; destroying all civilization above groud when you know well the enemy is below ground.
