They are not Indian & Chinese who came during colonisation. They adopted Malay language & some Malay culture like attire & cooking.

I think the Malay word "ceti" was derived from their clan because they were mainly money lenders back in the old days. Ceti = Money lender with high interest rates.

The Chetti Malacca are descendants of Tamil traders who settled in Malacca during the regin of malacca 15th to 16 centuries and married local women of Malay and Chinese descent.😘

I visited Kampung Chitty several years back after visiting the Portuguese settlement. I drove down to Gajah Berang. I remember having chicken rice for lunch in a Chinese food stall along the streets. There were no Google maps. I don't think I even had an old school handphone. Had to find my way asking people nearby for directions. Finally I managed to find my way.
Looking at your video was really helpful in recalling the places I visited. Yeah I recall seeing much the temples. Most of the houses are half brick and half plank just like my old house. Manggo leaves in row in front of the Melaka Chitty houses are common. All those I met were so nice and friendly. The whole place is truly colourful. Generally they speak Malay but when it comes to marriage and funerals rites ,they follow the Hindu culture. Their forefathers were mainly traders during the 15 th/ 16th century, some returned home but most of them settled down in Melaka. Some married local women.

Very interesting. It's good that the entrance to the village is well signed and I think there was a sign providing a background to the place? The houses are all neat and tidy, very appealing, it's good that these locations are recognized. Yes, pity there was no food stalls selling Indian Chetty food - that would have been interesting.

I have a classmate whose name ends with "Chitty." He is now married to a Chinese. There are inter marriages amongst the clan. Not sure whether they are related to those who operate as money lenders near the bridge whereby all the traditional houses are chettiars or money lenders. The road you trod was part of my school cross country route. There are still a lot of places of great food like Pak Puri, Chinese porridge and food around where you were. Great fried kway teow and also dim sum place. Oh, you will have a swell time in Malacca, lockdown or not.

The Chittys are descendants of Indian migrants who intermarried with Malays during the days of the Malacca sultanate. Just like the Baba-Nyonya who descended from Chinese migrants who intermarried with Malays and Javanese. The society during the Malacca sultanate was liberal and so inter-marriages between Muslims and others were not unusual.

Yeah because the history of their ancestors migrated more than 200+ years ago (16th-18th century) , assimilate well with the Malay locals during the Dutch rule or even older during the Portueguese rule of Malacca.. Sea traders mostly.
The newer migration of Indians in the 19th century or early 20th century mostly still maintains their native languange until now because of living among themselves in small Indian community only for decades in plantations, orchards, along railway or roads being built , as labourer brought in by the British mostly( British rule of India during the same time period just make it easier and huge influx of migrants).

These are the Chettiars, origin South India, also spelt as Chetties or Chitties. They used to be money lenders especially to the local Malay communities - rarely nowadays after the government has tightened the money lending laws years ago. While their interest rate could be exorbitant, their lending procedure is far less bureaucratic than the banks: handover your security (land title, jewellery, etc), sign an IOU document, then straight away you get the loan equal to say 60%or so value of your security.
