I've never heard anyone say anything bad about John Prine...only high praise. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to have seen him perform a few times while he was here. I'd like to see Tim O'Brien perform too...he is a mighty talented guy.
John Prine made me proud to be from Muhlenberg County. Glad I got to see John play in Muhlenberg County! During the Everly Brothers Homecoming concert years and a couple other times he came back here to play. Always was pure magic on stage!
Speaking of duet albums, one of my desert island discs is Tim and Darrell Scott. What talent! Also, an old picking buddy's cousin, Joe Diffy died of the covid about the same time Prine did. It was a tough year for the heart.
I love singing John Prine songs and folks never complain. One of the best song writers ever. But Tim, listen to me, you are catching up with John. You are an amazing writer in your own right.
Thanks for doing a sit-down with Tim. After recording "Let Me Love You One More Time" for Ralph Stanley's "Clinch Mt. Country" album, Ralph stated after Tim left that O'Brien was the easiest person he'd ever sung with." Ralph definitely knew a talented singer when he heard one.
I learned of Tim through listening to Darrell Scott (one of my songwriting heroes) This guy is one of the best pickers and can harmonize so well! Thanks for the stories!
I truly appreciate you keeping John’s legacy in the stream. That man did so much for so many people you could take all the people those people inspired and it wouldn’t be half the sum of Johns contributions. I wasn’t never good at math but I know something about music. Wish you all the love
So Otis, who the heck don't you know? 😊 Thanks for this and so many other great interviews. I don't know if it's just me, but many of my new music discoveries over the past 8 years have come from listening to your podcasts & TH-cam posts. Sincere thank you for adding new (new to me) artists to my listening world. Cheers to ya sir and Nancy (my gal) sends a hug
I love you, Tim O'Brien: I listen to your recording of "Señor" every day. _Every_ day. You autographed my copy of "Red on Blond" in the hospitality suite at the North Texas Irish Festival in 'bout 2004 when you headlined. I was playing with the _excellent_ band that opened for you. I put that CD in my backpack and never saw it again. If you find it please send it to me 😊
Covid took so many from us. My son was one of them. I'm crying as i write this. Seems like the pain never will go away.. Special people weren't exempt. Thank Otis for your interviews. Don't stop. Looking forward to the next.
I know this is a Prine discussion, but Hot Rize is an amazing group. If you’re into vinyl, the Hot Rize self titled album absolutely smokes, it’s mixed/mastered really well.
What a great way to start my day, stumbling onto this interview. I've been a Prine fan forever and an O'Brien fan nearly as long (Ophelia Swing Band days). I miss John big time, and Tim gets all my attention when he's around, which unfortunately isn't often enough (N. Cal). Thanks!
Tim mentioned Jim Rooney. Here's Jim talking about his friendship with John Prine. th-cam.com/video/YhCqcThzWhQ/w-d-xo.html Tim also mentioned Dave Ferguson. Here's Dave sharing Prine stories. th-cam.com/video/-5fYM6S_P4A/w-d-xo.html
You Tim I don't know but you are so fortunate to be around and know all these folks that you have spoken about . I envy you . w TIhat do you play or sing Tim
It's amazing to think Prine wrote some of those early tunes when he was like 19 or 20 years old. Sam Stone etc. Just like Hank, he was wise beyond his years, or what some like to call an old soul. I gotta star eating more meatloaf and hot dogs or something.
My band opened for Bill Monroe one time and when he got offstage he immediately walked over to us and said “which one of ya’ll is the mandolin player?” We were scared to tell him we didn’t have one. We had two tenor saxes ,guitar, accordion, bass and drums. Turns out he was selling some mandolin strings. I regret not buying them now, even though I still don’t play mandolin

hey cool i just met Tim OBrien when I cuaght the tour with he and Jan and Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris (who kindly had done a zoom chat for my lil community raido show)....had a ncie chat with Tim after the show and they were great.....thanks brother Otis - SJOCR
Your comment made me think of a time I went to a guy's house to practice some songs he had written. On the wall in his studio was a picture of him and John Prine sitting at John's kitchen table eating breakfast. Turned out that John was married to or dating my buddy's ex. I told him I bet it was an interesting conversation going on at that table.
Great great interview. I've been a fan of Tim O'Brian. So it's cool hear him tell stories. Incredible story about Arnold Schultz. Good for all of us to know about this history. A bit like another unsung, mostly unknown guitar player named Leslie Riddle who traveled and collected songs with AP Carter, and influenced May-belle Carter's guitar playing style. No Arnold Schultz? ... maybe no Bill Monroe? No Leslie Riddle, .. Maybe No Carter Family? No Carter Family or no Bill Monroe? Whoa.....unimaginable
The Rosine Project - Monroe Foundation - Jerusalem Ridge - The Birthplace of American Blue Grass Music - High Above Rosine Kentucky in Ohio County,. I seen John Prine in concert at Louisville gardens in Kentucky back in 2010.. it was a great show, he's the best comedian I've ever seen, also a pretty good guitar picker, God bless John rip
Otis, love your channel. I learn so much good stuff. But something is bothering me. Every time I hear guys from Nashville talk about the incredible expertise in that town, not only the musicians but the song writers, I wonder how in the hell there is so much crap on country radio right now. This past weekend I drove from NC to south Georgia to visit some cousins and the country songs were simple dreadful. Someone like John Prine is probably rolling over in his grave listening to all those lyrics about tight jeans, pickup trucks, front porches, and watermelons. What, pray, can be done about this?
Those guys he’s talking about are mostly session players. That’s why they have to be do good. They’ll play anything they’re paid to play, crap or not. There are also players who aren’t part of that scene though.
@@ledaswan5990 I specifically mentioned the song writers. The songs and the lyrics are almost universally dreadfull crap these days. I always assume the session players are technically great and will back what they're told to back, just like the Wrecking Crew, who were mostly jazz players who did not much like rock 'n roll, but they liked the money.,
Check out Tim's new record and tell him Otis sent ya!

Great stories-Tim is one of best musicians alive today as well as a first class writer and performer
I've never heard anyone say anything bad about John Prine...only high praise. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to have seen him perform a few times while he was here. I'd like to see Tim O'Brien perform too...he is a mighty talented guy.

Thanks for this, I could listen to Tim all day, singing, picking or talking, he´ s one of the best.
Grateful for this interview. Any information on Arnold Schultz is greatly appreciated.
Speaking of duet albums, one of my desert island discs is Tim and Darrell Scott. What talent! Also, an old picking buddy's cousin, Joe Diffy died of the covid about the same time Prine did. It was a tough year for the heart.
I remember when Diffy died too
I love singing John Prine songs and folks never complain. One of the best song writers ever. But Tim, listen to me, you are catching up with John. You are an amazing writer in your own right.
What can I say Otis, your interviews just keep getting better and better !!!🐿️😎🐿️
Greetings from Owensboro KY. Romp was this past weekend. It’s always a great time. Otis, your channel is a diamond in the rough
Ahhhh! This is great, Otis! Big fan of Tim O'Brien. Thanks for posting!
Great interview Otis. Always appreciate Tim O’Brien. Love it. 😊
I'm a warrior of the Hot Rize trails, never missed a show at the old Niwot Grange. Brownies and lemonade, takin' breaks out back.
Great interview!! Tim is one of the best musicians I have ever heard! What a talent!!!
I learned of Tim through listening to Darrell Scott (one of my songwriting heroes) This guy is one of the best pickers and can harmonize so well! Thanks for the stories!
Saw John prine here in cork ireland about a year before he passed saw him back the years when he came here
We need an Otis Gibbs Historical Conservation of Oral Insights of Americana, Country & Bluegrass Musicians through personal stories.
Thank you Otis. Really great interview. What a way to start the week!
Great stories, all. Thanks, Otis.
Please tell Tim I absolutely love "Red on Blonde." He happened to be on the bill the one time I went to the Grand Old Opry and he was great.
I love the album before that one too. With High on the Hillside and I need a Good Woman bad. Tim O'Brien is great.
I truly appreciate you keeping John’s legacy in the stream. That man did so much for so many people you could take all the people those people inspired and it wouldn’t be half the sum of Johns contributions. I wasn’t never good at math but I know something about music. Wish you all the love

Love John Prine stories! Thanks!
Thanks! I first got to see Tim and Hot Rize in 1988!

Another great one for the internet !
Covid took so many from us. My son was one of them. I'm crying as i write this. Seems like the pain never will go away.. Special people weren't exempt. Thank Otis for your interviews. Don't stop. Looking forward to the next.
So sorry that you lost your son, Jimmy. Grief never goes away. You just learn to live with it.
Thank you Otis.
Love Tim... thanks!!
I didn’t expect to learn more about Arnold Shultz than Prine. Thank you for this.
Maybe the best yet, thanks O.
I know this is a Prine discussion, but Hot Rize is an amazing group. If you’re into vinyl, the Hot Rize self titled album absolutely smokes, it’s mixed/mastered really well.
Just picked up one of Tim's old albums at a thrift store. Tim and Mollie Obrien take me back. Haven't had a chance to listen yet.
Tim, thanks for talking with Otis and us! Nellie Kane forever!
What a great way to start my day, stumbling onto this interview. I've been a Prine fan forever and an O'Brien fan nearly as long (Ophelia Swing Band days). I miss John big time, and Tim gets all my attention when he's around, which unfortunately isn't often enough (N. Cal). Thanks!
Thanks for these stories you two.
Some days the tears remind me that I still mourn the loss of John

Great interview!
well knwoing stevie goodman being with prine THE band etc.......nice
My mom died from covid on Mother's Day.
My mother-in-law died from covid a few months later.
It was a horrible time for my family.
Great. thank you.
Great interview… “ meatloaf Wednesdays”… !!!
Tim Obrien is a great player and composer but here he shines as a raconteur.
I'm not going to pretend I know who this dude is, but I aim to find out. Thanks for another great set of storytelling. Love your channel.
You're in for a real treat once you start with Hot Rize!
Yes and don't miss Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers. TIm can do it all and has a wide catalog of music to hear.
Tim's Facebook post on the passing of John was/is incredibly moving and beautiful. Everyone who likes this interview should read it.
You Tim I don't know but you are so fortunate to be around and know all these folks that you have spoken about . I envy you . w TIhat do you play or sing Tim
Mac Weisman duet: Average Songs For Ordinary People. Soooo goood.
Very interesting! Thanks!

saw Tim in mid-90s
great show

I want to sit down and talk with John Prine when I get to Heaven ❤
Your comment made me think of a time I went to a guy's house to practice some songs he had written. On the wall in his studio was a picture of him and John Prine sitting at John's kitchen table eating breakfast. Turned out that John was married to or dating my buddy's ex.
I told him I bet it was an interesting conversation going on at that table.
. . . and share a cigarette that's seven miles long.
@@an-open-mind nine miles!
Me too. I wrote a song right after Prine passed that basically says this exact thing. Great thinking!!
I can see John Prine and Steve Goodman singing Souvenirs in heaven, and Jesus walking up and saying, "You guys are pretty fucking good!"
Great great interview. I've been a fan of Tim O'Brian. So it's cool hear him tell stories.

Morgantown, not Morganton… I know it’s a miniscule mistake but it’s my hometown
There was a Dixie mafia back then.

That friend has to be the devil. How can he look so young, w/ one of his sons in high school in the 90's. ??!! Even the late 90's...i mean thats nuts
We all age differently.
It's 2024. Tim O'Brien is 70 years old. He looks great.
Arnold Schwartz may he get the recognition he deserves
❤❤❤❤
Tim &Otis write a song about Arnold Swartz Y'all...
Take a listen to the John Prine tribute song by songwriter Dennis Callahan. It's quiet good.
