The upper limit for software engineers is wild, especially once that equity starts appreciating over time. These were averages, so naturally some will make a little less and others may make a lot more.
You'll be spending $40,000+ a year for rent. If you don't want to spend 2 hours a day commuting or living in a slum or if you need more than 1BR to house your kids. There's a reason Microshaft no longer attracts anything but the lowest skilled software engineers... Their pay is dog💩 compared to Amazon or Google in the Seattle area. Then you have to live in Seattle as well. 20 years ago that was great, but now you have to deal with a city that is in a freefall race to become a third world city.
Software Engineer l60 here at Microsoft, 120k Base, 25k annual stock, 25k signing 10% annual base bonus. 6k relocation. Also we get more like 25 days off not 15. We get 15 days of PTO and 10 holidays. So more like 25 days. Also as for software goes we get 2400 dollars free in software yearly that’s Microsoft. One last thing they also pay off 1200 dollars of student loans a year, and give you 1200 dollars a year to spend on hobbies/leisure. ++ pretty much free advanced education(11k per semester paid)
I used to work as a vendor on the Redmond MS campus in a different field, and am curious about becoming a SDE. But I just feel too old (38yrs old) to learn a new skill to work in this field. Don’t even know where to begin. Now living in Chicagoland.
Start by building a small personal project could be as simple as a restaurant picker for when you are feeling indecisive. If you enjoy coding then there are boot camps, pick one that has a good job placement record and go for it 😊
With the current layoff of 10,000 employees, some are not doing so hot. Most were contract workers lasting only 18 months...following in the footsteps of Bill Gates when he first started Microsoft keeping temps for over 2 years without bonus or overtime.

The chances of you working at a FAANG company with 0 years of experience along with no education in the area would be low. I could a video about how I would do it, but you'd likely need to start somewhere smaller first.

ESPP? It lets you purchase shares in a company at a discount, so essentially extra compensation if you can afford to stash cash for a bit. Every company does it a little differently so I'm trying to figure out how to make the video.
@@rajitmittal1345 you only get to contribute a certain % of money. The money you contribute is held into escrow until the buying period comes. The shares are then bought and assigned to you, so you don't buy the shares yourself and you don't get to contribute an infinite amount to this.

Microsoft compensation is so low compared to any midsized company in Silicon valley.
It's all relative, they are known to have really great benefits. I'd rather take a higher salary but great benefits are nothing to sneeze at.
