Hi Wendy, here I am in sunny England (Not)..🤭 I enjoy your video chats,I must admit I am definitely in tune with you when it comes to de- cluttering! It must be an age thing, but I feel the same when out shopping now, I ask myself ‘Do I need this’ the answer always comes back as ‘No’.. I am 69 yrs & I have had a real good clear out of stuff in my house & as you say it is liberating! I miss my job a lot, I have been retired now for 10 years. I found it very difficult trying to fill my days, I also moved away from my home town which made life even more difficult & lonely. However, I have taken up lots of hobbies, drawing, sewing, crocheting, walking my dog. Getting older has been a difficult transition for me & I find myself looking back in the past a lot!.. It was happy that’s why I tend to do it!… but I do realise I have a future & I’m grateful for the time given to me. I read a lot how loneliness is affecting a lot of people, not just the elderly!.. Do you think it’s social media??…I hardly ever get a phone call from friends these days it’s always texting, but since I moved away ( not that far ) I have found that friends are quite ‘Fairweather’ that’s one thing age has taught me!.. Thank-you for the video & the book sharing! Kind regards..😀

Hello to you from across the pond! You have wonderful hobbies and I agree, we do have a future but it is hard to not look back to a time when things were simpler. I do think social media has a lot to do with the disconnect these days. Blessing to you dear lady!

Wendy, I feel the way you described (in the beginning of this video) EVERY, SINGLE DAY. The world around us is in complete chaos. Rosemarie ❤

Yes, and I look at it like this, in a world of chaos - I can chose to stand still and not let it get me down. Hugs to you Rosemarie!

I can so relate to what you are feeling, Wendy. I’m a year or two older than you so I can guess we experienced a lot of the same things…I have many of the same concerns and thoughts as you about where we are today as a society. I worked for 38 years and retired early in 2023 from a very high stress job. Same as you, I just couldn’t do it anymore, I hated it. My hubby and I simplified our lives for three years prior, got out of debt for the most part, and live a pretty frugal but happy life now. I look back now and see how I could have quit years earlier if I would have scaled back on spending, saved more and not spent money on a lot of stupid stuff.

I am so happy for you and your husband. We can learn a lot from each other, and scaling back is the way to go. Hugs to you!

Routines are so important! We know children thrive on them, but as adults, many of us get away from them. My new thing is trying to spend a few minutes each day doing absolutely nothing. No reading, no music, no internet, no TV, just sitting and doing nothing. It is not easy for me, but I am enjoying the challenge.

    • @halstonandharleys
      @halstonandharleys  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes, they sure are! I do that sometimes, just sitting and being with myself and no outer distractions. Thank you for reminding me I need to do that more, hugs!

Enjoy your honesty and ideas. I have about 10 years on you, but everything is in your face crazy and while I try to be free of most of the consumerism, political nonsense going on it is hard. I like to read (thanks for the book ideas) and exercise. I have started the year traveling to my favorite beach town in South America. Life is simple here and the waves to surf are great.

I bought a foldaway treadmill and I have been doing jogging and walking in my house all through January. I feel so much better for it (yet it was so hard to see that at the beginning). I want to start my youtube channel very soon...I'm kind of building my thoughts and confidence up to doing it. A great video as always. I'm going to Google the books you are reading...as I love reading to. I'm currently reading 'The Artists Way'.

I have a routine. Of course, however, it just got put upside down. Living rural, McKenzie River. Ice storm hits Eugene and Springfield. Power out for 6 days. One time about 12 years ago it was out for 4 days. Not at all common to be out for more than a few hours. I work at home, ortho lab. What a mess to catch up.
Never again. I have 13k generator on the way. 40-gallon propane to power it. Should last a week. AND there was no internet! StarLink is now on the way as well.
Guess I'm going off grid sort of. 13k is enough to power everything including the well. It will require switching things on and off in the panel, but at least I will be able to continue with my routine!
You run on heavy, heavy fuel. Power to you.

Hi Wendy, the time difference doesn't allow for a prompt reply to your videos ( I'm in the UK), but I was looking forward to a new one :) Again, similar thoughts and routines of mine. I am trying to declutter as much as I can, and make room for the air and light in my house ... too much stuff, too many years of collecting things ... But I am slowly parting with them , as I can feel that we should not get too attached to items, to stuff , it sometimes anchors us and doesn't let us spread our wings. The new thing I've been listening to is : Stoicism and lessons by the stoics, their philosophy of life. It is an eye opener. It has cleared my head, steadied my emotions and grounded me in the right place. The more I listen to them the easier life seems to be , even with all its uncertainty and chaos around . The stoic point of view gives us strength to carry on regardless , it is a strength from within. Blessings to you and have a great week. xx

Hello and thank you for sharing and I, too, have been watching videos on Stoicism and am learning so much - especially learning how to let go of things that don't serve me. Blessing to you as well!!

I read every single day usually at night for at least hour before bed. I also enjoy watching a few minimalist and simple living channels but I like the down to earth normal people and not the, what I like to describe them as, "trust fund minimalists" LOL The channels I like are more practical and they still have stuff but focus more on using what you have, not buying useless crap, cooking from scratch.

Hi again from Australia, Wendy. I'm finding sticking to routines difficult in the couple of years and a half due to many outside factors such as a relationship breakdown and my mother being extremely ill to the point of nearly passing away suddenly. These left me a little adrift and I've spent the time figuring out who I am and what I want out of life on my own terms. I'm really trying hard to figure out a routine that works for me now, but still trying to break myself out of a couple of bad habits that I've picked up.
I'm back to doing more reading and I feel more empowered and less stressed about it now because I lost access to my Goodreads account, which I panicked about for a bit, but now I feel good about enjoying books without worrying about it.
I've also started writing a little here and there again so that I will eventually have books to publish again, although that is taking off a little slower.
I just finished a 15 day affiliate marketing course, now I've got to do further reading on that and figure out how I move forward with it.

So didn't make a New Year resolution...but continue with regularly exercising which is walking/jogging outdoors no matter if snow or not. Helps my mood to get the blood flowing and being outside relaxes me! The book "Catbird Capers" intrigues me. I'm gonna see if a library has it [being thrifty there]. I can suggest a murder mystery story titled "An Unwanted Guest" by Shari Lapena. Published in 2018.

Wendy, I feel the same way! When I think about the money that I spent in my 20s and 30s... I was good about saving and contributing to my 401k, but I could have done much better. But then again, I think that the regret is stress at this point. The money is spent, etc.
I started decluttering in October 2014, and at the time I had a TH-cam channel, but it's gathering dust now.
This year, I would like to explore creative pursuits.

@@halstonandharleys Right where I'm at. My wife passed away 10 months ago. I spend so much time looking back. I am starting to spend more time looking at what is new. This new direction is completely different from what I thought it would be. Moving on, carrying her love with me. I could give up, but, then I would never see what life would be like if I didn't give up. She would want me to go on, so I go on.
