  • I’m back at Hemswell Antiques Centre in Lincolnshire, England to show you just how inexpensive antique chairs are and why you shouldn’t buy new, un-environmentally friendly new ones!
This particular chair is in the style of William & Mary, circa 1690 in date, but made a couple of hundred years later in the later part of the 19th century
To buy a chair to this standard new today would cost you around £5000…this one so prices at £895!
Get in touch with Hemswell here www.hemswell-antiques.com
Do you have fabulous antiques to talk about, or for me to to sell for you? I’m always looking for interesting items and people to feature and make films about here on my channel

    Thanks

Soon as I saw the Cup nd Cover leg carving....it was repro WnM .
I've got an unusual old chair..trouble is, I bought it before even cash in the attic came to telly. Twit here went and tried to reupholster it. Only bonus was, I upholstered over the original. Id taken off some key detail though.
It's rather elegant and unusually narrow.. a ladies seat no doubt. Not seen it for yrs buried under the daft hoards. TH-cam might develop in time ; where we're able to upload images in the comment section. Or voice clips.
Enjoy your Sunday. From Nottm racecourse heehee
I recall you were on the red team and your eyes rolled. It made my day.)))

Some of these antique armchairs have gone up in value in recent years, but still cheaper than new high quality ones.

Mr H ….. do agree that it is one stunning chair and it is very much greener than buying a new modern chair. I also concur that if you could find someone skilled enough to make one to that standard, you would need to invest the equivalent GDP of a small country to do it. As much as I get where you are coming from, to describe someone as bonkers if they couldn’t afford to spend £895 on a chair like that is, may I say, comes across as very denigratory. There are many people like me who really do appreciate these items but simply can’t afford to spend £895 on one chair. That doesn’t make us bonkers, it’s simply a day to day reality where you have to cut your cloth. I wouldn’t have a clue on what you earn…and it’s certainly none of my business, but if I did earn what I think you do then of course I wouldn’t hesitate. It’s all about perspective.
Love the channel and the hard work and content you provide, but on this occasion I would argue your enthusiasm for the object clouded your judgement.

Chair has great bones but I could never live with the upholstery. I think a finer fabric would help to show off the wonderful lines of this chair!

How many British pounds to have it reupholstered? You anticipated my question. It cost me over a grand to have my favorite club chair reupholstered and it was a Pearson Lane chair from the eighties, well, the first time it was reupholstered, the second time, I had moved to an urban location and got a better deal and better wearing fabric.

Whoever upholstered that chair was a real artist. The price of a new comperable chair is insanely expensive compared to buying the real antique. That said the price on the antique is well out of my range, so it'll have to go home with someone else. Call it yet another Poor Tax. You can't afford to spend 900 on a good chair, so you spend the 200 you have on a bad one that falls apart. Then you have no money and no chair, but the alternative is having the 200 and sitting on the floor. (unless you have time to hunt booties, estate sales, curbside etc and if you're working like a dog good luck with that....)

Why is I can spot the good stuff on TV but put me in an antiques centre and I’m rubbish?😅

Most modern furniture falls apart in five years.
