This game is really popular around south east asia region. The master-champion in this game is non other than Thailand. FYI, 'sepak' means 'kick' in Malay Language, while 'takraw' means 'hand-woven rattan ball' in Thai Language. Although some players nowadays may use plastic material for the ball.
Excuse me…sepak…also word in Philippine sepa...or kick..takraw also is wooden…we play this sepak takraw in Philipines almost century……even though my great grand parent…they teach their grand children about this sport

SEPA IS KICK IN THE PHILIPPINES LANGUAGES TAGALOG. CEBUANO/BISAYA/ HILIGAYNOn and, ALMOST ALL. ITS WAS NATIONAL SPORTS OF THE PHILIPPINES AS SEPA TAKRAW. WE PLAYED THAT BEFORE IN THE SCHOOL.
Thailand is really good at this sport and that's why they just shocked the whole community of the Teqball sport worldwide because they used these skill in Teqball and dominating all teams worldwide.

Sepak Takraw, in my opinion, is the most fun to watch sport. I'm not a sports person but during Intramurals in school, Sepak Takraw is my favourite thing to watch next to Volleyball then Table Tennis.

The ball is made of Rattan or plastic. It's quite hard and if you got hit by it, it is painful. I got hit once and it leaves a bruise. It became a lesson for me to stay as far away as possible from sepak takraw courts if their are players playing to avoid another accident

Sepak takraw is a tradidional Southeast Asian sport that dated back more than 5 centuries ago. The use of net was later introduced by Brittish colonizer when they brought badminton into the region. sepak takraw is former national sport of the Philippines but in 2009 we replaced it by Arnis (a kind of martial arts using wooden stick) because takraw is originally from our brother Malaysia. Still takraw is popular in Philippines and the rest of south east Asia.
as a Malaysian, we have to credit our Thai Brothers too, let just say both Thai and Malaysia co-found this game, the Thai also revolutionized this game too with they Horse Service not to mention they are dominating the International scene for decade, just recently Malaysia making a comeback after the introduction of the Sepak Takraw League.. Philippines, Indonesia, Korea and Japan also been making a big step forward in this game, i will not be surprise if 1 of this nation will become a powerhouse of this sport soon..

It been in Thailand, Malaysian Myanmar, Indonesian,Cambodia, for more than 100 years ago. Also Thai-Malaysia-Myanmar are amazing.
I've seen videos of young boys practicing those kicks ... on a concrete floor. They must learn how to land very young. They had a ball suspended on a string so they could practice hitting it.

I can tell you one thing, that ball does not feel good when it hits your face after being spiked like that lol it's used to be made of rattan. The modern ones are made of some kind of synthetic fibre and it hurts like hell when it hits your body, it feels like being hit by a 2 X 4. As players if you haven't had your face scratched by the ball during your journey, you're probably still a newbie 🤣

The sport is mostly a South East Asian phenomenon, and I would argue even in South East Asia. The popularity of the sport is slowly dying. These days you have Football, Tennis, Badminton (Famous in South East Asia), etc. It is hard to compete because other sports have bigger exposure, they have bigger investors. Even the government are reluctant to invest in Sepak Takraw. Because you cannot win an Olympic Medal by being a nation that is good at Takraw. I do hope one day, the game will get more exposure and perhaps some investors will want to invest big money in it.
Many south east asia claim sepak takraw as their traditional game. As am from malaysia, i would say that is malaysia traditional games too. And "sepak" is actually malay word translate to "kick" and "takraw" if am not mistaken from thailand word for " ball matting from bamboo".....

Ask Germany. They are learning from Thai players and Thailand sends players to teach them. Korea is the best for now. Theyve learnt so fast. Theyve even beat Malaysia recently. Thailand needs to step up the game.
Overall, good that the sport is growing quickly. However it needs lots of improvement. This sport is very hard to keep the ball going ie easily score in this game unlike volleyball where sometimes the ball lasts for a while.
Don't say that, Thai and Malays will go after each other over the origin of the sport. The name of the game now is sort of a compromise with a Malay word and Thai word.
I think it's the ultimate sport. Because it is an exciting tournament throughout the tournament and uses a high level of skill to play and Thailand has always been the world champion.

I remember Sepak Takraw Is Philippines' National Game. Young people used to play this game in my time, but not much anymore, as this very physical and need flexibility/agility. Southeast Asians are still actively playing this game. Lately, I notice that it's becoming more popular

Soon after the sport goes international .. being in Asian Games, Sea Games and every other international sport competitions.. The ball material turn to some kind of plastic for better weight control and easy to maintain it's condition.. Nowadays, Europe start to play but at the very beginners level.. Thailand players 're the best and being top and the best teams of all.. in Asia. Thai girls 're also play this sport as well and they 're as good as men players .
