There are some rather striking differences. I own a new CX-50 (and had a 2017 CX-5 before this) and I think the Mazda is better if you are doing most of your driving on the highway. There is absolutely no comparison on the interior; Mazda with leather seats and gorgeous design (plus the Bose surround sound) wins there. The Outback Wilderness has a 260hp 2.4L 4cyl but you are stuck with their CVT automatic which, for me, is a deal-breaker. Also, it only produces 277 lb-ft of torque while the Mazda CX-50 produces 320 lb-ft with its Turbo. The Forester Wilderness only has the smaller 182 HP engine so it can't compare to the Mazda turbo. I do think that Subaru has spent more years and more R&D perfecting their AWD so I honestly suspect that it would win out in some tight situations if the tires are the same on both cars. That is an educated guess but I suspect in bad snow or really tough terrain Subaru might well be better.

Most people don't go "off road"...Mazda knows this, so releasing a vehicle aimed at their actual market (shopping malls and occasional towing) makes complete sense.
@@glamdring0007 yeah but I don't really feel this version does much different than the cx5. I think releasing the stand out off road model would be a better marketing play. rather than just competing with themselves right at the gate.
@@FDNY101202 It's all about the towing. My own CX-5 will only tow 2000 lbs which is not so great and really the only downside to the vehicle in my 4 years of ownership so far.
@TruckKing Great review! Any chance we could get more information about towing at max capacity? If you could give us accurate weights (dry, wet, with cargo) and tell us how it performs up hill / downhill that would be really helpful. I hear stories of people blowing their engines trying to tow (Usually from revving above 4000rpm) and it wasn't covered by warranty. That would suck! Trailers less than 3000lbs are too small for me but I'd rather not have to get a truck if I don't have to. (Expensive and not as nice to drive around a city)
The cargo area is longer but it's lower... It's only a hair over 0.5 CF larger than the CX-5. Its a difference of greater depth in the CX-50 vs greater height for the CX-5. The CX-50 is better for carrying long items, but if you are loading up the back for a road trip, it's a negligible difference from the CX-5, just like the extra rear seat room (+0.2 inches). If you want a large 2 row SUV from Mazda, you're probably gonna wanna wait for the CX-70, but you also should probably expect to pay 40-50k for that one.
Mazda has something good going here. Refine it a little better particularly in the rear; get rid of fake grills and bulging taillights. Front looks great. They also can offer different engine options; high powered engine with a high end independent suspension (rally edition anyone?) and also a diesel version for more towing. 3rd row seat? This thing can be in a class of its own. With the above suggestions I don't see who they can compete against.
I wished that Mazda CX-50 have at least 22 degree approach angle and a 9.5 inches ground clearance that would crush Subaru Outback Wilderness. I just ordered my first Mazda CX-50 turbo premium plus last week. Now I want to wait if Mazda would match the ground clearance and the approach angle on it's new 2024 CX-50 turbo premium plus.
I bought this (Premium plus non-turbo) even though the Outback is probably a more practical choice. I wanted the panoramic sunroof and gas savings (31mpg+ so far) as we were going to get an Outback with the smaller engine. I bought a 19 Outback for my father-in-law and was going to do the same but neither myself or the wife were excited about it. Test drove the cx50 and we both had a emotional reaction to it vs the Outback be the more sensible option. Basically if a Volvo and and Outback eff'd while a cx5 watched you get the cx50. It isn't fast but handles way above it price and has enough lux touches to make you feel like "you fancy". 6 speed trans drops a gear with moderate gas and two if you floor it but isn't constantly doing stuff like a CVT (amazing from an engineering standpoint but annoying). All the important controls are buttons or dials which is nice. If you are a frequent offroad or rutty road driver the cx50 is set up too firm to not bother you. If you spend most of your time on road, like a sporty feel and some lux touches the this is one if not the best option if you arent going to spend Lexus/Infinity/Acura money. If you need extra cargo/roof space or go offroad a bunch then just go buy a used low miles 2018 and up Outback which is the most practical choice. Maybe I will do an Outback vs cx50 vs my 69 Dodge a108 (clear winner ) vid at some point.
Mazda is a small company. They aren't going to go that far in the offroad ready segment. They just want to compete against Subaru, Rav4, Passport and the like, while still being about Mazda - a driver focused vehicle.
So, a rough road vehicle as opposed to off road…which in reality most of these outdoor lifestyle vehicles are. Mostly hits for looks, cargo capacity, ride and towing enhancements, a miss for the 20” wheels, though I understand there is a version coming with 18 inchers, taller sidewalls. Hopefully using regular octane with the turbo wouldn’t result in too much of a performance hit….sure wouldn’t want to be buying premium at todays prices.
Maaahhhhhzda? You must be Canadian. haha. Got to get the Turbo. New subscriber. How to do you think this model compares to the top of the line 2023 Subaru Outback?
I don't see the cx50 as an offroad type vehicle at all. Just a good all around wagon utility vehicle. I do like it though and am heavily considering getting one
I've owned a CX-5 for years now and have been very happy with the vehicle so I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Mazda suv. My CX-5 has comfort, great gas mileage, it's nice to drive, and it's been completely reliable. That being said there are better vehicles, like the new Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick, if occasional towing is what you need...towing has never been a focus for Mazda.
I have a CX 55 because the CX 5 is not friendly for bigger guys to drive in for a long period of time. The CX 55 is way more comfortable and has more legroom.
I think this is a bit of a missed opportunity for Mazda. They have the more street oriented CX5 so why not take the CX-50 a bit further to actually compete with the Subaru Wilderness line up? I would have used those as a benchmark - 9.2/9.5 " clearance and 20 degree + approach angles, comprehensive under-body protection. I have an Outback Wilderness and have taken it on some technical trails - it's very capable. I don't think the Mazda CX-50 would really compete outside of rougher dirt roads. But then that begs the question - how much more capability than the CX5 is this really providing? If you wanted additional off-road capability an Outback Wilderness is probably the better choice, as I really think the regular CX5 will do almost everything this would do.
The CX-70 or CX-90 with the 3.3L inline-6 turbodiesel would definitely be the best Mazda for towing. Sadly that engine will never be in those SUVs, well at least in the CX-60 and CX-80.
I will pick the CX 50 over every other competitors in its class. But if Mazda was to somehow pull some strings or do some magic and bring the BT 50 over here, I will definitely pick the latter.
This Mazda is outstanding beautiful, but it's for someone who don't go ROUGH OFF ROAD,the Subaru outback is a better off-roaders with best ever four wheeler symmetrical. I still prefer the Mazda due to good look
I think it looks pretty sharp, much better than the CX-5. I think the lack of backseat room (especially head room) is disappointing, and I wish they had a dynamic suspension to go from soft off-roader to taut b-roader. Of course, such dynamic suspensions are expensive.
Cx 50 is nice with the new stuff but rear seats is .2" ? Com'on what's that gna do? The price for the turbo awd model $47+k. That's pricey for this compared to Toyota 4runner sr5 4x4. Almost $50k might as well get the Toyota 4Runner for more capabilities or jeep Wrangler. I think it's good now that Mazda finally come out a better CX-5 (cx50). It took them long enough like what? 7-8 yrs?
As far as styling, they lost something. At least the sheetmetal on the Mazda lineup was interesting with the fluid S contouring on the panels. It's not ugly, but it lost a detail that made them different. It is also too low to the ground.
Reliable vehicle? I really want one but with price skyrocketing(and hard to find that trim where I am at least) I’m not sure it’s worth it. New Mazda might literally be only few thousand more then used trailhawk.
I wouldn't say the "bubbly" look to the CX-5 is subjective. It is rather round and upright, and its center of gravity is very high. It has a high rollover risk, the 50 does not.
I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-50 has the same engine. It burns engine oil from day one and getting progressively worse. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. Don't take a chance and buy Mazda’s. They don't stand by their product unlike Honda. Mazda will do whatever it takes to avoid paying to fix the problem, even when they themselves admit that there's a problem. My advice, stick to Hondas and Toyotas. I’ve had problems with their cars in the past but, they always fixed my warranty issues without question and after that they ran forever. Don’t fall for talking point that Toyota and Mazda are now collaborating and even use the same assembly line. It means . nothing. There's a class action lawsuit against them (Haven't responded). I personally have filed with the Mazda, BBB, Attorney General, and a consumer agency. It's been two weeks and nothing. I'm lining up a lawyer as my last resort. Don't go through this hell, buy a Toyota or Honda instead.
I've finally SETTLED on this-- instead of Subaru, or any of the others... and will LIFT mine and modify it a bit...:) I don't need a freakin goat like the CROSSTREK from subaru- or a big wagon for OFFROADING the way the Outback could do-- and I DO need to comfort on the road- and good AWD for bad weather (wet/icy snow etc....). I won't most likey by "offroad-" unless I slide into a ditch.. so THIS is perfect for me and i LOVE the style-- and I'm SO thankful this doens't have that HUGE UGLY screen stickin up that like in the subaru!!! Besides- as Sarah-N-Tune pointed out-- subaru backwards is U R A BUS!!!! :)
Just traded in our 2021 cx 5 on the 2023 cx 50 and it is awesome. A bit noisier with wind and road noise but for me the panoramic sunroof makes it worthwhile. AWD is great as my Cayenne has AWD and always liked that feature. Wish the LCD was full time touch screen as Android is very limited and iphone has full function touch but I don't care for apple phones. (Really don't care for Android either but thanks to Microsoft killing Windows phones I don't have a choice.) Biggest disappointing aspect for Mazda though is the BS price for just an SD card to utilize navigation maps. Sorry but $400 for that is ridiculous, yes $400 for just an SD card with maps that come standard on every other car with a touch screen navi system.
I have a CX-5 and will likely not buy a Mazda again to be honest. It drives ok but living north of Quebec city and in the mountains... I miss my Subaru. Mazda is often behind for the cabin esthetics and tech
Nope. The 6 spd is a proven unit and provides very good fuel economy. I see 32 mpg average in around town driving in my CX-5 and the trans is perfect IMO.
@@glamdring0007 Yes but they are late compared to the competition and with a 8 speeds you will get even better fuel economy and will accelerate quicker
Since they are a relatively small company, they may not have the money to develop another transmission right now with all the other work they are doing. Maybe a deeper partnership with Toyota will address that.
@@carllovullo6602 pros and cons to everything. Might lack a couple of cogs to the competition but it seems to be a robust and reliable unit that likely isn’t giving too much up (especially in performance where the turbo is the most powerful in the class I believe).
It looks nice, but I can’t stand all these manufacturer’s slapping a bunch of cheap black plastic cladding on them and charging way more for an “off-road” package. It’s ridiculous and more reviewers need to call them out for it! The plastic may look ok now, but just wait a few years.

I would have bought a CX-5 or 7 by now but no V6 is a deal breaker - can’t believe they don’t make em
Why is cylinder count a deal breaker? Inline 4s are so compact and straight forward in design.
@@ALMX5DP 184 hp is way too underpowered for a vehicle of that size
@@Imunderpar4win what about the turbo 2.5 then?
@@ALMX5DP probably would be my only option - I would just like to have the V6
@@Imunderpar4win for the sound of the exhaust or..? A V6 is larger and may weigh more than this setup.
I'll take a longer cargo area. Piling things high just means that everything will be toppling over. Easier to fit bikes into a longer cargo area 👍
"A Gift to Last" was the last TV I saw filmed in Ontario. "Anne of Green Gables" from PEI and "The Beachcombers" from BC are the only two others .
They will introduce a more offroad oriented trim called Meridian. 18 inch wild peak tires and different offroad calibration and higher road clearance.
Great review. I come here for your honest reviews and I feel like it them.
Needs at least 1 more " of ground clearance...
I'm definitely upgrading from my cx30 to the cx50 love the aggressive look
I went to look at a CX-5, but it was way to cramped for me, the CX-50 was way more comfortable driving.
I bought a premium plus non-turbo CX 50 three weeks ago! Lovin’ it!
Great video as always. Where exactly is this place you are testing it on? I am from Ontario as well.
I think this was a missed opportunity to go after the Cherokee Trailhawk.
My father puts regular in his Turbo, against my advice lol, but he has had no issues with his CX-5....yet. I tend to put premium in all my Turbos.
Mazda Turbos are designed to run on regular and premium. You lose 20hp and 10lbft on regular.
Good job truck king, I love you.

informative review! - what do you think about the pricing for the Canadian market?
My off road mode is a gmc 1500 4x4..
I hate the tires tho I rreeaallyy wish they let you choose the meridian tires as an option
Maaahhhhhzda? You must be Canadian. haha. Got to get the Turbo. New subscriber.
How to do you think this model compares to the top of the line 2023 Subaru Outback?
CX50 looks great, I take it easy over that chik CUV CX5
CX-5 for weekend warriors.
Well done. Great info without the who cares info.
Great review!! keep it going
But if Mazda was to somehow pull some strings or do some magic
and bring the BT 50 over here, I will definitely pick the latter.
This Mazda is outstanding beautiful, but it's for someone who don't go ROUGH OFF ROAD,the Subaru outback is a better off-roaders with best ever four wheeler symmetrical. I still prefer the Mazda due to good look
love the styling that CX-50 are super awesome .. I like your review man thank you 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Definitely a better proportioned vehicle than the CX-5...I'm not sure about some of the details though.
Mazda Congratulations for not using Garbage CVT
Don't like the sun roof.
Trading in my awd turbo carbon just for the towing capacity
I think it looks pretty sharp, much better than the CX-5. I think the lack of backseat room (especially head room) is disappointing, and I wish they had a dynamic suspension to go from soft off-roader to taut b-roader. Of course, such dynamic suspensions are expensive.
The cx50 is a home run.
I am not an car guy, but I wonder why everyone offers 2.5l engine? Does anyone make their own? It seems like they all source it from same manufacturer
Still 6-speed auto transmission?
This is the brand new Maaazda
Cx 50 is nice with the new stuff but rear seats is .2" ? Com'on what's that gna do? The price for the turbo awd model $47+k. That's pricey for this compared to Toyota 4runner sr5 4x4. Almost $50k might as well get the Toyota 4Runner for more capabilities or jeep Wrangler. I think it's good now that Mazda finally come out a better CX-5 (cx50). It took them long enough like what? 7-8 yrs?
Truckin' Awesome !
I see a unibody pickup based on this CX-50 in the future 🤷🏻♂️
This is NOT an off-road vehicle. Not even close. And the tires are wrong.
Like No#39... Morning Steve!!.. enjoy the day 🌞
As far as styling, they lost something. At least the sheetmetal on the Mazda lineup was interesting with the fluid S contouring on the panels. It's not ugly, but it lost a detail that made them different. It is also too low to the ground.
Best offroad crossover you can buy is still a Jeep Charokee Trailhawk.
Reliable vehicle? I really want one but with price skyrocketing(and hard to find that trim where I am at least) I’m not sure it’s worth it. New Mazda might literally be only few thousand more then used trailhawk.
As long as you like the waiting room of your local Jeep dealer service department...sure.
@@itsnick37 30k on mine and no issues so far.
@@glamdring0007 interesting since the only time I've seen my jeep dealer is when getting the oil changed.
@@FDNY101202 My parents new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been back to the dealership for a recall and suspension issue already...
How does it compare to a Bronco Sport Badlands on road? Off road?
they already released the 2025 model at least on their website thats all it shows
I think you are the first person to say there is more body roll and softer suspension than the CX 5. I've read nothing but the opposite
man your coat is nice
I wouldn't say the "bubbly" look to the CX-5 is subjective. It is rather round and upright, and its center of gravity is very high. It has a high rollover risk, the 50 does not.
High rollover risk? The NHTSA give it fairly decent marks in that test.
@@ALMX5DP It is labelled by the manufacturer on the driver's sun visor... I sell them.
@@thescavwithnothingtolose1224 isn’t that the same label most (if not all SUVs above a certain height) have?
We have a 2022 CX5 Kuro or Carbon if your American.. it's is a great car, but has been problematic and not very reliable....
I thought there was a driving embargo? Uh oh hahaha
Doesn't look that off-road capable, needs to have a lot more ground clearance.
Amazon for $30.
i like it a lot
I have a CX-5 and will likely not buy a Mazda again to be honest. It drives ok but living north of Quebec city and in the mountains... I miss my Subaru. Mazda is often behind for the cabin esthetics and tech
Wow Mazda should have upgraded the transmission to a minimum of 8 speeds 🤦♂
If this car had 300 or more horsepower I'd probably have to get it. I guess tuning exists for a reason.
This is not a truck. :).
It looks nice, but I can’t stand all these manufacturer’s slapping a bunch of cheap black plastic cladding on them and charging way more for an “off-road” package. It’s ridiculous and more reviewers need to call them out for it! The plastic may look ok now, but just wait a few years.
Goodness you’re cute 😍
I know theres a non turbo 20 incher. Dont buy it . It will be the slowest of the pack.
Yeah, cause everyone’s buying a Family car to go fast!😂
If you want to tow, buy a truck....
Subaru wannabe with nasty fake rear vent 👎👎👎, useless wheel size and tire for off road lol 👎👎👎. Cx5/9 awd turbo signature or Carbon edition is the best bang for the bucks and u don't have to pay for fake vents 😂.
More fake vents would be preferred.

How are the brakes while towing?
