How to read the tyre pressure sticker 1. determine which tyre you have On your Tyre Look for a marking in a format like 275/40 R19" 101Y 275 = Tyre Width in mm 40 = Aspect ratio (Side wall height between the top of the tread and the rim) R = R indicates that the tyre’s internal construction is Radial. Radial technology, invented by Michelin, uses combinations of rubbers and metal and textile reinforcing materials to form very robust structures in the tread area but flexible sidewalls. It allows a longer tread life and reduces fuel consumption thanks to the reduction of the rolling resistance. Other letters could be : P: Passenger Car LT: Light Truck C : Van commercial tyre XL, HL or Reinforced : Tyres with a higher load capacity than normal for their dimension. Such tyres need to be replaced by the equivalent (example : an HL tyre by another HL tyre) T: Temporary (spare wheels) 19" = This number is expressed in inches and indicates the diameter of the wheel on which the tyre is designed to fit. 101 = The tyre load rating or load index (in our example: 101) is a code which corresponds to a maximum load (in kg) that can be carried by a single tyre. V = The tyre speed rating (in our example: V) is a code which corresponds to the maximum speed at which a tyre can carry its maximum load. 2. Unfortunate that this information is wasted on the likes of so-called back yard 'engineers', who think they know better than BMW/Mercedes/Honda/(enter make here) what size tires and what cold pressures to run in those cars. To them I'd say, run with the factory sized wheels and tires at factory pressures for the first few weeks of ownership. Then, deviate no more than 1-2psi(6-12kpa) above or below those pressures, if you must.
