    Is the TCL-X100 II on your wish list or is it an accessory you'll pass on? Let me know down below. That pincushion distortion is pretty brutal if you like straight lines. Sample photos on t he blog: www.vaskoobscura.com/blog/fujifilm-tcl-x100-ii-tele-conversion-lens-a-must-have-for-fuji-x100v-users

    All adaptors like this distort to a greater or lesser degree. The TCLII and WCLII have auto sensing built in to correct this in camera for JPEGs, but if you're shooting RAW then the very nature of a RAW file means no correction is applied at all. Pincushion correction should be applied in post - it's easy in any of the main photo editors and should be part of the RAW 'development' stage.

      Exactly, the guy focues too much on the lens distortion, but the distorion is removed in lightroom in the post processing, or in-camera for JPEG. So he should present the JPG instead of the raw images w/o post processing. This guy is not a professional!

    Most if not all lenses create distortion. Cameras and software correct it so most people would never know. Isn't it possible that Lightroom could be correcting for what it thinks is a 35mm FF equiv, which makes the 50mm FF equiv look weird? I would be curious to see what would happen if you change the distortion correction in LR to be for a 33mm Fuji lens instead of the 23mm on the V.

      @--.-- 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is auto corrected in JPEGs, so this is a real problem in RAW

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      What I've noticed is that if I shoot the camera in JPG the distortion is auto corrected in camera and everything looks good. Even the lighting is optimized in camera. But if I shoot raw I get that distortion in the raw files. I'll play around with different lens settings in Lr and Capture One to see if I can figure something out. If I can fix it I'll make a video sharing the trick. Thank you for the comment and the suggestion.

    I think I'll buy if the TCL is becomes 75mm or even 85mm.
    50mm compares to 35mm doesn't really make much differents for landscape...

    I purchased the TCL X100 original many years ago when I purchased my X100s. This converter shines when using for portraiture and a large aperture. Wide open at f2 you get a sharp image with pleasant creamy bokeh. Off camera flash using triggers is the only way to go. I do not use it for just walking around and taking photos because as you pointed out, you lose compactness and portability.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Totally agree with your assessment. I should have mentioned that in the video. Portrait wide open is where you get the best results. Thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel.

    Very helpful video, thanks so much! I have an X100VI on pre-order and ordered this converter. Plan was to just use in camera crop for 50mm with the new 40MP and use this when I wanted 70mm view (to keep it at 20MP) or additional bokeh. After seeing the distortion, not positive if I'll keep it. I think portraits with additional bokeh would be useful, but the distortion and scratching the finish on the front of the lens doesn't sound amazing. Might just use iphone with portrait mode when it's time for bokeh haha. Earned a subscriber.

      Thanks for the comment glad the video was helpful. One thing I noticed after making this video is that when shooting jpg there is no distortion. The camera makes all the corrections in camera. I don't know if that makes a difference for you but worth noting that most people shoot the X100 cameras only jpg.

    • @ramblingcameraman990
      @ramblingcameraman990 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vaskoobscura_ ahhh that actually is hugely helpful. I thought it odd that the camera wouldn’t correct for the distortion when it knows the converter is on there and I didn’t want to have to apply correction in Lightroom if I’m shooting jpeg, so this is important info for sure! If I’m shooting raw and editing anyways then I don’t mind just creating a correction profile for it (If there isn’t already one).

    Great and Honestly review, especially black version. distortion will be pretty much corrected by in camera. But it won’t happens in Raw file. You may made a preset to correct the distortion raw files. Well it is an extra job. ❤

    Thanks for this review. Wonky perspectives would drive me nuts. Why create more work for myself in LR? My biggest regret, is buying the leather case because it doesn't fit when I have the lens hood on. Live and learn.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh man I totally agree about the case. It's a pain when you have a lens hood or a screw on lens. But I will say that I noticed that lens distortion doesn't appear in the JPG images. The camera corrects for the distortion internally but the Raw files are raw files and need to be processed. Appreciate the comment. Good luck with your 2024 shoots.

      Maybe that's part of it too. but the paint on that part of the lens easily flakes off if I push at it with my fingernail. Cheap paint. But I don't mind gives the camera character. Thanks for the comment.

    I have the x100vi and this adapter and find out that I won't use it much. The fact that I always have to put off the filter first and also have to carry around this beast, makes no sense to me. I don't want to think much about changing lenses and carry lots of gear, I already have my a7cII for that. I will prolly sell it again.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So the distortion is so bad I'm not going to get on. As I have the VI the 50mm crop (and fall off to 20mp) will suffice. Have you tried the wide angle one? If that also distorts I'll save another load of money.

  • @Justdgoud

    hey I'm new to photography and the x100v and i see in the setting the x100v has a TCL option at 50mm and 70mm but i think this way would affect the image quality would buying the TCL adapter I'm guessing I wouldn't be losing image quality just the portability aspect?

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I've noticed that the warping only happens when you shoot raw. If you shoot jpg the camera makes the corrections in camera. This is the same for the WCL and TCL. Have fun with your new lens. Appreciate the comment. Welcome to the channel.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you shoot JPG everything is corrected in camera. I was shooting RAW. I was using the version 2 model of the TCL and when you put it on the camera the camera automatically changes it's setting for he lens. At least that's what I was told. I'll take a look through the menu for distortion correction and see if makes a difference. Thanks for the heads up.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did a quick google there is a distortion correction on Fuji's interchangeable lens cameras that can be used when adapting lenses but it doesn't look like the x100v has that option. If you have a link with some info on the setting in the x100v send it along and I'll take a look.

      @@vaskoobscura_ interesting, perhaps the raw files remain uncorrected

    • @scoopzuk
      @scoopzuk 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Came here to ask/say the same thing. If you have the Mark II version of the TCL then the magnets should auto-switch the camera to TCL mode and this SHOULD add correction to the lens barrel/cushion distortion. I know you were shooting RAW but I beleive this should also write 50mm lens to the meta data if it is working correctly so LR would then be able to use the correct lens profile to undo the distortion. Looking at your video all photos showed the same 35mm (23mm actually but you know what I mean) focal length in the overlay.
      I'd be interested if you could test whether the 50mm lens meta data is only written to JPG and no RAW.
