I think that my grandad on my father's side has something to do with the engineering at Tower Bridge. He was an engineer by profession. I wonder if people knew his name. his name was Charles Rider.
So how do they know when there's a boat that's too large will be passing through? Presumably the shipping company has to notify the bridge crew in advance?

mistofoles if you have a boat big enough you can book a bridge lift for free
the bridge has be notified at least a day in advance of the vessel that needs to come through.
