In Tabee Toean - meaning 'Goodbye Sir' in Indonesian - five veterans of the Indonesian War of Independence (1945-1949) share their recollections, telling us how they as young soldiers, unprepared for guerrilla warfare, found themselves in a devil's circle of excessive violence and cruelty.

my grandfather is a member of TNI at the time in WONOSOBO in the year of 1948 he almost killed by the dutch army when he walked to patrol with his company in SEPURAN area.

As a Dutch-Indo who's great Opa was a POW, I do not seek an apology. I was not there and those who committed those crimes are now dead just like the ones who had suffered through it. Rather, It is a valuable lesson learned to understand how war is a crime and should be taken very seriously. All I ask is that no one holds the guilt or grudges of their ancestors but instead move forward for a better future that they all would have wanted.

Be smart,, people! There were lots of dutch soldiers who honestly felt terrible about these murders and persecutions. But at the same time, they need to follow the instructions given by their superiors. I'm indonesian but also half dutch. My great grandpa and my great greatpa, also my great great great grandpa, worked in dutch military. They were 100% dutch. But, they taught everyone in the family to be good people. They honestly didn't like any cruelties. But again, they got no choice but to follow orders. Bukti nya, oma opa, mama sy bahkan sy sendiri, hidup sebagai orang yg sangat mencintai bangsa ini. Ya, keluarga sy datang dr bangsa penjajah. Tp mereka yg membuat sy tumbuh jd pribadi yg baik dgn sesama dan terutama mencintai bangsa ini. Tidak semua penjajah itu berhati keji. Alasan utamanya itu kalau mereka mengakui kemerdekaan Indonesia tahun 1945, mereka mengakui bahwa mereka bukan sedang meredakan konflik di tanah mereka, tapi menyerang negara merdeka secara militer, kalau mereka mengakui secara de jure waktu itu, bantuan Marshall Plan dari Amerika bisa berhenti untuk Belanda.

The funny thing is that the Dutch military leaders were never convicted. Their war crimes wounded so many Indonesians even until today. And they live in Netherlands now as a "hero" or "veteran". How can you call someone who is so greedy and doesn't respect human rights to live free as hero? HOW? You can basically compare them with SS Nazi. @@tiaramaars The SS were Nazi troops who committed mass scale war crimes across Europe, including the Netherlands which was occupied during WW2. It's a reflection of how discontent he feels about the Dutch role in the conflict, as his own nation had to go through similar hardships from oppressive occupiers.

As it is the younger generation will NEVER understand the whole history of what add all taken place. There are three different eras involved in the History of approx 450 years. First: the world history that eventually led of the Spice Trade and Colonial Occupation by European countries. Second: WW ii and the Japanese Occupation and world history that happened during the first five of the 20th Century, 1900-1945. Third: The Revolution and the war for Independence of Indonesia, 1945-1949. Each subject can take as much time as is needed to teach of the students to make them understand what happened world wide during four hundred years of WORLD history. As long as it is being told and explained by people wit a hate and rage "Agenda of REVENGE", in the interest of the individuals it will always end up in arguments. When it is taught by people (true history teachers) with the purpose of educating the students , then they MAY understand.It takes an neutral, and a cool and educated mind.

My grandpa was in the Dutch army motor pool and drove ambulance and other trucks and Indian motorcycles and equipment. Never did get the chance to meet him sadly

I am Dutch (and half Polish) and I am so ashamed for what we did after WW2. We were just occupied by the germans for 5 years, 5 years of murdering and suffering and the Dutch were so happy when they were liberated by the allies.
