Totally agree especially on some of Citizen Promaster Aqualand models that feature depth meters, and rapid ascent alarms. Yes, some people may say all those features are bordering on tacky or unnecessary but they are also a feat of engineering and make them true "tool watches" rather than jewellery. I scoff at people who refer to a Submariner as a "tool watch". They are jewellery. Very few sport and rec divers uses dive watches anymore except as a back up to their dive computer and as many have said you are likely to see a Promaster Aqualand on a the wrist of a diver as a backup watch rather than a Rolex.
I have three Promasters but my grail watch would be to obtain a vintage, mint, circa late 1990's al0024-06w with full lume dial, depth meter, and rapid ascent alarm with original movement intact.

Mine runs steady at +4 spd. I have slightly more expensive watches but the Glycine "feels" the most expensive. When you brought up Islander, I was so happy you mentioned the Northport. Why I think that is a groundbreaking design for Islander, is because it isn't a clomage to the SPB143 new 62 mas, but it is different enough to be its own thing. And it is such a perfect watch at this pricepoint, i would say if it isn't better than a $1-2K Seiko, it's at least on par. The case is thinner, the bracelet is a whole other league, it wears much nicer, the Miyota is just so much thinner and offers a high beat at a lower cost than the 6R Seiko calibers. And I haven't even mentioned the USP, that ripple dial... The Northports are amazing. Well done Mark!

The Combat Sub is hands down the the King of value and very happy to see it included. TGV you put me on to them back in the day when as you noted, was selling for $1,000. The watch remains the same to this day. I find it funny how people like to ding Glycine for their Invicta ownership but no one ever says the same for a brand like Zodiac, who are owned by the king of “Mall brands”, Fossil.

    • @pauldack5129

When you are talking about tool watches under $500.00 for diving, it is not possible to leave out the Citizen Promaster
Aqualand JP2000-08E. It is a legendary dive watch and is still the go-to dive watch for a lot of scuba divers today. When it comes to specific dive related features, it leaves most others in the dust. Plus, I love the design of the watch. It wears so well on the wrist that you forget you are even wearing it.
Here are my favourite things about it:
    - tool watch look & overall appearance
    - long history as a dive specialty watch
    - certified dive watch to 200 metres with many useful dive related functions
    - records last 4 dives (Date, Start time, maximum depth, dive duration)
    - displays duration, current depth & max depth of current dive
    - dive alarms for (duration, depth, ascent rate)
    - Other functions
    - perpetual calendar
    - chronograph (stop watch)
    - alarm
    - can set digital time & analog to different time zones
    - Accuracy
    - after 8 months mine is running a total 7 sec. fast
    - s/b accurate to approx. 10 seconds per year (that meets the standard for high precision quartz movements)
24 mm between the lugs provides the band with a strong mechanical advantage when it comes to keeping the case laying flat on your wrist. I’m a big fan and would have that lug to lug width on all my watches if I could. It is just superior to all other options. If that weren’t enough, the case design itself adds even more stability because of the extra width the built-in depth sensor adds to the case.
This article (link below) .does a good job of capturing the history of this very special tool watch.

My Dad who was in the Army used to put his G.I. watch next to me that he realized the ticking from holding me somehow relaxed and helped me to fall asleep. To this day I'll still do this when I'm finding it hard to stop thinking and fall asleep. But watching U.G. and anything to do with them. Began a hobby that I so love. I buy old mechanical watches take them apart. Triage them then repair them. It's taken a few years to build up the tools. But I even have began fixing some clocks. Even though watch parts and their repair can be tedious with many screws being a dust speck. I love to watch lol the small city that is a mechanical watch movement come back to life. Many have simply been over wound. Probably by a young child finding it on their parents night stand and wrenching that crown till it's as tight as a head bolt lol. Releasing the main spring and a good lube brings these back online. As many are basically stuck in the time they were over wound thus no wear and tear on the parts has incurred. Great video guys

I bought a Deep Blue Juggernaut IV about four years ago on the fully milled ss bracelet, sapphire glass, lumed ceramic bezel, powered by a Sellita SW200. It was around 400 dollars and at the time, there was a 40% off code available so I got it for around 260 with taxes!! I still have it and it's in excellent shape. Another great show from the Dynamic Duo! 🤣❤

SOOO Happy to see Deep Blue getting some love! I would have that model if it were 42mm or smaller. I love my three Deep Blues, which includes my only tritium tube watch. Great value and they keep accurate time!

Certina DS Action Diver needs to be in there, either the 43 for the absolute monster specs or the 38 for the great and rare size nowadays!

@@user-yi3ox8wy4k yeah not under 500 sorry. Still, I bought a 38mm brand new from an AD for 630€. Great value for a swiss diver ISO certified to 300m. Ar coated sapphire, 80h of power reserve, etc. Lovely watch and hard to beat. The fact that it is an ISO certified watch to 300m, at 38mm, is crazy imo.

    • @tiagodvt
      @tiagodvt ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@user-yi3ox8wy4k oh it will never see 300m, that's for sure. Not even 10, probably.
It's just great to know that it is a though watch. Fiy the ISO certification covers other stuff as well, like anti magnetism, stress tests to the bracelets, shock resistance, etc. Certina has some videos on youtube showing some of their tests. You can also search for the ISO book on google. It is much more than just water resistance.

Great video. I want to share that the Sellita 200 movements on two of the three Glycines I own have serious winding problems, despite very rare and gentle use. I also have problems with Sellitas in Alpina watches.

My pick is the Ratio FreeDiver. It is a Seiko SKX Homage, 200m water resistance, screw down crown, domed sapphire crystal and Seiko NH36 movement. Ratio is a microbrand out of Singapore and the quality of their time pieces is great! Very affordably priced too ($140).

Happy days are coming for sure 😁 Not to mention that now I'm thinking of getting that Seiko SNE575 too 😂

TGV if you can review the 36mm Glycine Combat Sub, I’d love to hear your take. It’s size is a bit controversial but it’s so thin and well proportioned that it works for bigger wrists too. It looks dressy and elegant but is an absolute spec monster with 300m water resistance, sapphire glass, 120 click bezel. Wayyy different (nicer) experience than the golden eye imo

When I dived as my hobby in the 80s and early 90s whilst serving in the R.A.F, I wore a Seiko and then a Tudor, but i saw the Italian Issue "Marina Miltare " and wanted one, then Citizen released the Civilian 200M Automatic Model in 1997 and I lusted after the Sunburst blue face Variation in the Citizen catalogue that was a limited release and just impossible to find ..... fast forward 24 years to 2021 and I'd sold my Tudor and had been wearing a Citizen eco prodiver for the last 10 years, then my daughter gave me a Christmas Present she'd bought on Amazon, remembering me talking about watches, she'd spotted a Citizen Sunburst Blue Face Automatic Prodiver, with the hackable Movement...I've matched it with a Blue Nato strap and with the winder at the 8 o'clock position, it is so comfortable .. I've dived with it and it's my daily wear
