David Lee Roth lived the life of 10 men. He’s never been broke. He’s never been destitute. He’s never been without money fame or women. I don’t feel sorry for him at all. He had a good run.

There's a lot of truth in that. He may not be on top of the music world anymore, but he can say that he reached the summit (yes, intentional mountain climbing reference there) when most others never even made it half-way.

Getting old is sad. It robs you of your Life Force. In music, for some reason getting older is the saddest thing ever but some people have enough humanity to rock old. Not many, mind you.
Kurt Cobain figured out for himself when enough was enough for him, and that's why his astonishing success is so fucking sad.

I haven't listened to a lot of Van Halen since my teenage years (I'm 47 now) but Diamond Dave and Sammy Hagar were hand-selected for the band because they were GREAT frontmen. They kicked ass, tapped ass, rocked the fuck out and made BREAD. The kind of bread you can't make by being one of those "hard working" losers, that's for right bloody honking sure and I know because I tried to do it that way and it's all bullshit :)
If those guys' life stories were "sad" then the rest of the human species would have killed itself a long time ago! Van Halen fucking rocked and while I think Sammy just sang better songs for them, Diamond Dave's massively exuberant, joyful personality helped make Van Halen a well-known staple of rock 'n fuckin' roll.

The biggest mistake Dave made was letting his ego get the best of him and leaving the band. But, its like all of these bands that hit mega stardom, the money, parties, women, and egos get in the way and destroy it all. I'm glad Dave worked it out with the brothers in the end. I do think Simmons broke Dave's spirit, as it seemed to hit Dave really hard.
Van Halen with Diamond Dave is still the best Rock and Roll band I've ever had the pleasure of listening to... And the hits aren't my favorite songs, the B side singles where the magic was. They really did capture lightning in a bottle with that original line up.

What’s this utter nonsense? He’s still arguably the greatest RR Frontman of all-time, certainly makes most lists. He’s a RRHOF. So his career ebbed and flowed, like just about every other classic rock artist. The difference is many, if not most of them, are all long forgotten after 40 or 50 years. Not Dave or Van Halen. He had platinum albums inside VH and out of the band as a solo artist too. He rightfully regrouped with the band he helped found, and even named, in 2007 and until EVH’s unfortunate passing in 2020, they had a successful run of 3 large tours, 2 albums, etc. It actually included the largest tour gross VH ever had too. Going back to the heyday of the band, it was DAve who was there for the only number 1 song, the only 2 diamond albums, and outselling what came after by about 30 million. Sure, Dave may have faded for a time from his pinnacle when the feel good rock of the 80s turned to grunge, but so what? Many artists did. Difference is not many artists rebounded like Dave to go out with a bang and a great comeback. I think he’s doing fine now with his money and accolades from a long and illustrious career. If you expect him or anyone else to be back in their prime in their 60s, or actually 70s now, I think you’re just fooling yourself or want an excuse to take unfair shots at the guy. That just ain’t how life works.

Roth thought he was bigger than Van Halen. Roth was larger than life and what the 80's was all about. He got old and went too far, now more like a clown craving attention. He thinks he is funny but isn't.

Dave just embarrasses himself now...he missed the "bow out gracefully" boat a while ago...and wow, here come all the fanboys. Why can't any of you just admit that his antics and desire to stay relevant, just makes him look really bad now? Ever heard any of his recent interviews? Dude sounds like a mental patient!

I was listening to a a '78 bootleg today and even back then he couldn't just "shut is f'n mouth, he kept yelling Eddie Van Halen after Eruption so many times I think I know how and why EVH had a problem with booze and drugs. Because if he didn't I think he'd have snapped much earlier then he did when they finally showed him the door.

It's ridiculous Keith and Mick continue to tour, the Stones had their days. Seriously, who wants to see two 80 year olds (especially Mick out there shaking his skinny old ass, doing his lame "rooster strut"). Wtf? At least "Father Time" finally caught up with Steven Tyler, and Aerosmith is finally done. These oldsters surely don't need the money, just more adulation, that it appears they still can't quite get enough of. I'm a musician in my 70's, and certainly don't need to relive the 70's, 80's, 90's... those days are LONG over.

There's a lot of misinformation in the first three minutes of this video. 1984 was released in December 1983 but more importantly, DLR was not the one making decisions in the band. Anyone who has followed the band knows that it was Alex and Edward who controlled everything. If you don't believe me, just read the book by their long-time manager, Noel Monk.

In the mid-90's I was somehow put in first class and as I sat down DLR was right friggen next to me. I was stunned. I loved old VanHalen and couldn't wait to talk to him. I never got the chance. That dude was in a world all his own. Hustling the stewardesses was the only thing on the agenda and making a fool of himself. We never exchanged a single word. I contrast that with Alex VanHalen, who talked to me like a human for 3 hours while his wife complained about the seating arrangements. Alex was asking ME questions. Really a nice guy. He really could put away the booze though. You'd have had to carry me off the plane. I was in SLC UT during the 5150 tour and sitting on the stage steps as Eddie played that now famous solo. I was 10-15' away and could feel the spot. I wanted to shake his hand, he was amazing. Played with such joy. What a loss.
