I really enjoy forensics and forensic anthropology. Just wish this show went on longer than it did.
British history shows are sooo much better than what we get in the US! Much more into getting the actual truth😊
Not true
I was thinking the same. Maybe it seems that way because their history goes back so much further.
We've got a LOT more history!
America only cares about profits, and knowledge and science is only acceptable if it provides profits.
I remember watching this 4 years ago with interest, now that the comprehensive DNA study has been released, the fact that I'm closely related to one of those victims in particular makes this documentary even more eery.
What! How interesting! How did you find that out?
I was DNA tested for curiosity's sake many years ago. The paper which covers the Norwich well was released on 30th August, entitled "Genomes from a medieval mass burial show Ashkenazi-associated hereditary diseases pre-date the 12th century".
Basically I have a double match with one of the skeletons on both parental lineages, which means I share a common ancestor or two with one of the victims.
Most of those thrown down that well were very young, toddlers and babies with a couple of adults.
@@SaxonYear410 Very interesting and very sad. My brain can't process of the horrors that humans have inflicted upon each other.
@@aksez2u What really stands out to me is how the children weren't spared, when Christians perpetrated massacres of Jews they would often forcibly baptise the children. 12th century England was a far cry from the polite and refined society it's stereotyped as today.
@@SaxonYear410 Maybe this is a clue that the deaths were caused by fire/smoke inhalation as speculated in the video? Many countries have barbaric histories. Hard to think about.
There are very few episodes of this series, I really would like to see more... It's very interesting!
It didn’t make enough money even though it’s amazing and dr black didn’t like filming a great deal
Absolutely fascinating....... this doc was done in a truly tremendous manner: informative, intriguing and humane. Whilst the outcome was sad I appreciate the content and what it brought to me. Well done.
I wish they would do more of these specials: They are fabulous!
What a great documentary. The science is amazing and it sometimes takes us in a direction that no one can ever expect.
If I was on the Council in Norwich I would be placing a plaque close to the site of that well, to remember the dead. And to serve as a reminder that British history is just as tragic and just as brutal as it is in other countries. More so, because we have denied it for so long, sugar coated it and hidden it. We have yet to accept it and learn from those mistakes.
So sad there are so few episodes! I’ve watched them all 2-3 times already.
Professor Sue Black is awesome.
Greetings from Canada. Love this series. Thanks for posting!
As a Jew I suspected a pogrom from the outset. That was a period of terrible persecution in both the UK and the Continent, and the disrespect of the burial immediately suggested that the victims couldn't be Christian. I suspect they held the Jewish dimension back for dramatic purposes - but I'm impressed at the powerful and moving way they told the story. A great series!
I saw this episode when it was first shown on TV. I too strongly suspected a pogrom but scientifically it wasn't provable, although likely. I think more likely than 'dramatic purposes' is that what we can discover from DNA has moved forward quite a lot since this programme was made eg they now know the hair and eye colour of one of the individuals. Dame Professor Sue Black has helped prosecute war crimes and has great integrity. I don't believe she would hold back the truth to make more compelling viewing.
Since this show was filmed and aired, further genetic and historical research has been done and apparently these 17 people were killed in a pogrom.
I think the History Cold Case series is exceptional, a sort of 'Silent Witness' in the middle ages, if you will. Many thanks, @Banjay History for uploading!
This is so interesting I love watching history & learning all about it so keep up the good work
Another job so we'll done .I fully enjoy your wonderful work . Please bring us more .
I grew up happily as part of the only Jewish family in a small South Wales town. The problem with being Jewish is you never know how long the tolerance will last. Britain today is very different and I have lived in Israel for over thirty years. The problem is "going back where you came from" is also complicated as you aren't wanted there either. Every story has two sides and the media tend to choose one and not report the other in every field. The lack of real coverage and openess to different opinions seems to be leading to brain death.
Interesting.
Israel looks like a stunning place my grandad spent a few years there. I was going through his photos. It led me to TH-cam some of the walks and tours and tours are lovely. Any suggestions for anywhere iv done all the main tours on here and a few off trail.

In my part of Canada our history stops at about 1780 so when I watch the British stuff it blows me away !
I work inside the Chapelfield centre, a couple of shops away from the well's location. We all have stories of strange things happening and most people think it's haunted 😅
I'd haunt the place as well. If that happened to me
Interesting!
I really love watching these. From Texas USA would you guys make more and put them on? Thank you Blessings
jeepers, this series is a lot more grusome than what I bargained for. so interesting though. wish sometimes the name of some of those they interview was written underneath with their job title.
very very interesting ...........however...very very extremely upsetting......
This make me cry may they Restin Peace
Why would you throw bodies into a well where you get your drinking water??
They explain in the video that the impact trauma the bones received after being dropped in likely meant that the well was dry. So, no one was drinking from that well anymore.
They mention in the episode that one of the conspiracy theories that was used as justification for persecuting Jews was that Jews poisoned well water. The well they were thrown in was dry. I think it’s likely that the perpetrators throwing them down a dry well was symbolic, and intended to humiliate the victims even more.
When royalty didn't want to pay back the loans from Jews, they could always incite a pogrom to do away with them, and the loan disappears. But you have to get rid of the heirs of those providing the loans too. And if those making the loans had property, and royalty did away with them, they could then claim the Jewish property to replenish their purses.....How handy, except if you are Jewish. Also, Jews in many places were barred from owning land, and from certain professions, so money lending was one avenue to support their families left open to them.
This is how it was back then.. they mistreated their own .. life was worth nothing... great program love it 🇦🇺
Very much worth the watching I just love these episodes 👍👍👍😊😊😊♥️♥️♥️
i have never understood why the jewish community has been persecuted. i am sad to see that it went way back
It’s been going on for as long as religions existed… all throughout history! It goes even further back than the Middle Ages… makes you wonder what happened for there to be so deep rooted hatred that it literally has been going for over 1000 years!
This is horrifying. I have a tiny bit of European Jewish ancestry and sometimes I worry that things like this might have happened to them.
Do they still do work like this? I hope so
Dame-ship for sue black.
The Jewish historian looked so sad at the end. 😔
Honestly I don't know why the comments shock me. The majority should be ashamed of yourselves. This was extremely interesting and very sad. Some of you psychopaths should have your computers taken away. RIP
hiko73 I couldn’t agree with you more. I didn’t read any comments until after posting my own and was shocked at how crass and vulgar most are ..... why would someone watch a serious doc to then post such uniformed comments. I was glad to finally see yours.
@@lorrieharkey3383 perhaps people post such comments because they believe that this video is not being honest and that an entire community is being smeared as racist based on a possible 30% dna of less that 30% of the possible victims of a possible misdeed. maybe that gets people asking questions and vocally expressing their distaste for this video. just a theory.
hit dogs bark
Almost sounds like you align with the murderers instead of the victims... therefore you feel like facts are an attack
@@alexc6324 The genes showing in 30% of Jews compared to 6% of Europeans does not equate to there being only a 30% chance they were jews. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. But then again, the ignorant are the most confident.
I hope the sooner rather than later buried them all together (family grave) with the technology we have with 3D printers if they wanted to display remains they can use a 3D printer and then give the remains the burial the deserve. I think these people more than deserve a final resting place together with respect.
I think this was filmed around 2007 when 3d printing wasn't as much as a thing
I believe the Jewish community in the city gave them a proper Jewish burial x
Can you do a history Cold Case of the two Prince in the tower the sons of king Edward iv and Queen Elizabeth Woodville please I really appreciate it cuz I really want to know what happened to the two Prince in the tower.
They can't do a cold case on the bodies found as the Queen won't allow the bodies exhumed
That would be interesting
The tomb was been given refusal to be opened by the Queen. If Charles refuses also then they are definitely hiding something I'd say.
Interesting series.
From the start I thought Irish, Catholics, Jews or Scots. Four of the Five things the English hated. Number five is the French.
that's not true, you don't know what you are talking about
What no Welsh in there
@@RhosynGwyn The English tolerated the Welsh because they needed bowmen. :)
15:18 why aren't they wearing gloves while touching the old historical documents? Skin oils can destroy them over time.
Clean hands are considered safer than using gloves, as gloves can get caught on the pages and tear them, as well as transfer residue between pages.
Poor people :(
cemetery and mall. How odd.
Murder, most degrading and repulsive.
The result of the ROMAN Catholic Church promoting the narrative that Jews killed Jesus rather than the obvious perpetrators and despots of the day ... the Romans.
Technically it was both. The Jewish leadership turned Jesus over to the Romans who decided to execute him. And according to the New Testament the Jewish leadership accepted the responsibility of Jesus' death on the and their children. Great recipe for bigotry and persecution even though Jesus said to love one another.....
I'm only 12 minutes in and as a history buff I can already tell that these poor people died in the English holocaust. The word holocaust was first used during the English one and that's where the word originated. It was called holocaustem
I hope they get a propet burial now
48:24 what is she saying? A dear in tears?
Think she’s saying “adherent ears’ - meaning that the earlobes are very small and attach directly to the head. It’s an inherited trait that is evidence that the two may have been related.
I do not understand anti-semitism, i do not understand racism and bigotry. How pompous, how arrogant must a person be to deem another unworthy? And how very UN-Christ-like!
The real life Dr. Bones #Bones #Brennan
Oooh don't call her that. There's a video on TH-cam where she slates Bones. I think it's the one of her and 3 other Scottish ladies of science. It's very interesting if you ever have an hour I recommend watching it.
What caused the holes in the skulls???
I wondered that, too.
Probably stiletto. Those family was murdered and bodies were hidden in dry well, so nobody will find them
@@nathalienathalie1829 : Could be.
But I wouldn't bet on stealth.
The bodies would poison the water.

The fact that i knew it was jewish people in the well the second they said it wasnt a christian burial and was done with disrespect says a lot
I believe they may have done the DNA of all that they could later. Would love to know where to find the results if anyone can point me there.
I love History in all kinds and am now wondering why I never studies this subject in my Teens!! I have found that the Jewish Community arise in lots of different Historical Texts through world History and Always keep to their Community!!!!!
How morbid to have a mall next to a cemetery.
It might seem so, but in many British towns/cities that developed over 1000 years ago (sometimes more), we have little choice! My home town of York is pretty small but is full of people. The city centre was founded by the Romans and people have lived on it consecutively ever since, so we've just had to keep building over and around things. This leads to churches and graveyards right next to very modern shops- it doesn't seem that weird when you grow up with it. 😁
At 22:00 is she wearing those legendary cat skin gloves?
Those were different times, women married young. My great Grandma married my Grandad she 16 and he 45.
My grandma 27, my grandad 16 thats just over 70 years ago. Different times definitely.
I can see mob mentality, lead by jealousy, envy and coveting are the perfect description of the leader of the mob.
When this series was first shown - my other half and I used to wager on how long it would be before it turned out that the reconstructed face would have 'a very prominent nose'.
Both Caucasians and Semites tend to have very prominent noses. What's your point?
@@SuperTonyony - It was that it would emerge, at some point during every single reconstruction, that the person 'would have had a very prominent nose'. Doctor Caroline had a thing for prominent noses. It became a running joke in our household. Nothing to do with Semites and/or Caucasians. Every reconstruction had to have a big nose! At some point - Doctor Caroline would inevitably announce 'he/she has a very prominent nose''.
I thought she said "a deer in tears"
I don't know why you would throw bodies down a well & contaminate a water source?
We could certainly do without throwing children or anyone down a well...😕
Not cats! :(
What was the DNA code?
Do we all need the CSI treatment to make history interesting? To the producers: It's a mass murder mystery. There's no need for the flashy edits and perfunctory drama. This is real, not a screenwriter's imaginary mass murder!
I don't know if power change was considered. Often in history when an area was conquered by a new power the old power family was often all killed. That would fit the situation. just like the situation with the last Russian Czar's
family. we all know the story of "Anastasia." But it didn't always happen in rich or powerful family. And the well was handy.
With all due respect, ma'am, you obviously know little about Medieval period. No non-Christian family, no matter how rich and influencial, would be ever granted any office in Christian kingdom. Most of them practiced their chosen trade whilst some could operate in "grey area" on courts of local Christian nobles or even, in few cases, hold some minor honorary positions like a cup bearer. Anything that would have gave them any kind of real authority over Christians was strictly forbidden. Similar rules are still enforced in more traditional Muslim societies to this day.
Where are your Glover !
Just where did they get their drinking water?
That was my first question, but they said in the documentary that the well had dried up. They must've been using another source.
BUDDY LIGHT
It was Norwich, they drank piss but called it ale....
Regarding the bodies down the well, why are they focusing only on the Jewish skeletons and say nothing about the European skeletons? Did they test every one of the children or do they just assume that all the children were Jewish because they want to jump to the conclusion of racial discrimination? How many cat skeletons were found with these people? Were there a lot or only a few? What is the possibility that all of the adults and at least the older children were considered witches and as such were thrown down the well with their familiars?
Surprisingly the worst of the witch hunts/trials were not in the 1200s (Middle Ages) but in the 1600s (Renaissance). So while one body and cat might fit your theory, 17 is a bit too many.
Why the shock particularly on the part of the Jewish historian to this event when another Jewish program was well recorded in l2th century Norwich re William of Norwich which didn't get mentioned once
perhaps he/she didnt see that documentary when it was aired on TV!!!! 😂
which historian doesnt know about the jewish role in the middleages lending money? i learned this in very low grade at school Oo ... are these "doctors" actors or just bad acting their surprise? or whats the deal here?
I.e. Shylock
This is the necessary background information for the many (particularly we Americans) who are fascinated with Cold Cases and CSI, Bones, etc. but ignorant of things in the medieval lives of people living in very different political times.
I'm really shocked they didn't consider that the bodies could have belonged to a family of Roma. There's evidence that Jewish and Roma communities used to mingle, and that's the first thing I thought of when the DNA results came back as "mixed European" and part Jewish. And, as few will contest, the Roma are one of the most hated groups across the continent, and most certainly would not have been granted the dignity of a proper burial.
It would be anachronic since the Roma didn't arrive until a few centuries later.
@@Lilas.Duveteux and the people named Jewish today came here around the 19th century.
@@justtruth5855 Yet the Norwich Jews were closely related to modern British Jews, and that is because the Norwich Jews came from mainland Europe, of the same stock modern British Jews come from.
Why would make a mall in the middle of a cemetary
Right. It's like Brits don't care about their historical land and buildings.
@@KuptisOriginal *like they don't care about anything
Heck here in the States I know if a cemetery that's in the crossroads of a three-way intersection! Developers are absolutely shameful.
I already commented about this above, but it's really not that wild. If you live in a city centre with any history whatsoever in England, you could be living within an area that's been continuously inhabited for nearly 2000 years.
My hometown of York was founded by the Romans and so is one of those ancient cities. People have always built on top of and around the things that came before and it usually is incorporated. For example, Medieval churches in my city (of which there are MANY) often were built partially using Anglian bricks and pieces of Roman tombstones.
It's a rather ignorant and rude attitude to assume that we don't care about our history, when in fact we keep it close and keep it alive by using the buildings and public spaces. Graveyards are frequently used for picnicking and just a quiet escape by locals, not to mention the wildlife that gets green sanctuary in the centre of a city. They're pretty places that are usually enjoyed plenty by tourists, many of whom bemoan the lack of something similar at home.
It's easy to place all your graveyards miles outside of town when you have the benefit of semi-modern city planning. Folks in the Early to High Medieval period didn't have that and so buried their dead in their local churchyards. The more the population grew, the more people did what they do and expanded, eventually building more homes and shops around the churchyards. 🤷♀️ It's not disrespectful for people to use their own city centre for it's intended purpose and it's nothing new either. Medieval folks wouldn't have been surprised or horrified that living people built shops nearby, as that is how they lived themselves.
👍
At least they didn't become lamp shades.
The group reviewing the find at the concluding presentation seemed to forget that this murder occurred several hundred years ago and in a very different time and place. The virtue signalling going on was inappropriate and ahistorical.
No it wasn't. There are countless events in human history that are, quite rightly, shocking to us today and it is totally appropriate to express that shock. I'm pretty sure that the time and place of this event hadn't suddenly been forgotten.
(Mind you, the use of that unpleasant term "virtue signalling" is itself a signal - usually that some rather unpleasant opinion is about be expressed. You show me my biases and I'll show you yours.)
how dare those people...
*checks notes*

Always the jews- why ? all through the ages - persecution -
Gotta wonder, huh?
Judaism does not prohibit money-lending, as Christianity does. So when Christian sources of money and capital dried up, the Jewish people in the community came forward to fill the needs for loans. But of course, this made people resentful when they were unable to pay back their debts. People demanded the services of money-lending, but then persecuted the money-lenders. And for Christian churches, this was infuriating because their dogma barred them from making profits in this area, giving more control, wealth, and power to Jewish leaders, which was very threatening to them.
So in either case it seems that people demanded that Jewish people fill these roles and then condemned them for the consequences of placing them in said roles. Pretty despicable.
The Jews killed jesus
@@johngeorge9865 The Jews asked the Romans to kill Jesus, and they agreed to do so.
The Romans’ washed their hands of the affair although the roman soldiers crucified him it was the Jews who wanted it. Remember Jesus was a Jew.

That's what I thought for a second but I think not
So many things wrong with her handling of the document that you’re not sure where to begin.

Roman Catholicism has got nothing to do with biblical Christianity.
Neither does some random man-made church from the 1500s or later. Where do you even think the Bible came from? A unified Church sorted out the legit texts from the forgeries and unnecessary writings--and before the 1500s there was just the Orthodox, Catholicism and various heresies. Try reading Scott Hahn, Patrick Madrid, Marcus Grodi or Trent Horn, just for starters, for a different p.o.v.
(Interesting that your bio quotes Romans 10:9-13 yet you make a distinction between Catholics versus "Bible-based" Christians...)
