- This series follows people who, by their own admission, cannot stop cleaning and carefully matches them with someone whose home is in dire need of a spring clean. Together these people with such contrasting compulsions will explore how their different behaviour affects their lives.
The first cleaning volunteer is mum of two Amanda from Essex. The 31-year-old not only works 60 hours a week as a business manager but also spends an additional 20 hours a week on housework.
Even her two children Amelia, seven, and Liam, six, are expected to clean.
When it comes to her children’s personal hygiene Amanda is equally obsessive, as she bathes them in Dettol once a week.

She's not doing right by those kids, making them feel bad and throwing away their toys. They're going to hate her someday. And no one should be giving their kids a dettol bath. That's pathetic.
If Amanda told me that she would be bleaching away after I'd visited her house I'd be so insulted. I'd rather have a cuppa and a chat with Jeanine anyday!

Amanda is rude, abrasive, judgmental, controlling and absolutely lacks any sort of empathy. She was happier about getting her way than actually taking into consideration Janine's childhood trauma. She's just a control freak, period.

Low self esteem and other mental health issues are all made up in the eyes of folk like her. Obnoxious to the extreme.

She needed someone like Amanda to come in and take control for the very reason that they are both opposite in many ways and if she was janine they wouldn’t have completed the clean

Amanda lacks any empathy. The emotional reasons people hoard or don't clean like these people are often found in childhood or grief. Jeanine was pouring her heart out to Amanda and telling her about her visceral reaction to dettol and why and it just went over Amanda's sub zero head. I thought Jeanine seemed a great mum and her kids adore her.
Part if being a good mum is keeping your home reasonably clean tho 🤷♀️
@@alison2984 There's a balance though. If you're spending all day cleaning and scrubbing with dettol you're unlikely to be spending lots of time with your children.

@@alison2984 exactly, 'reasonably'.., but sterile environments are as unhealthy for children as excessively dirty ones..as well as inhaling all those chemicals all the time..she claims she works up to 60 hrs a week, (dont believe her), and cleans for over 20, never mentions playing with her kids..

Giving her children a Dettol bath!!!! I'm shocked. When I was a kid we had a bath once a week and survived, never sick, no allergies or intolerances, no asthma. We also played outside all the time in the dirt but our mum focused on fruit and veg and no sugar diet, everything whole meal and always home cooked from scratch. Amanda has priorities all wrong, what about the constant chemicals from the cleaning products??? She's worried about germs, I'm actually concerned about cancer and Kidney/Liver issues for these kids.

You get detol that can be put into baths for your skin if you have a cut or skin problems... its actually recommended by some doctors for certain skin conditions
And she did say the hospital recommended soaking a cut in detol and that's why she bathed the kids in it x
I'm concerned about their mental health being berated for acting like kids, having their stuff thrown away because their awful uptight micromanger mother doesn't like mess, and being treated like filth that needs to be washed in Dettol. Amanda belongs in a padded room, not on a TV show.
@@alison2984 Doctors also prescribe drugs that can have seriously harmful effects. Occasional use on a cut isn't the same as disinfecting your children every week. That's not healthy, even if the manufacturer claims it's okay.

It is not necessarily true that her kids get sick often. Many of us including me, bath in dettol as a child and I was a very healthy child with no illness as were the other children who also had dettol baths everyday or at least a couple time a week.
I loved a dettle bath as a kid and still love the smell.there is a dettle that is for baths and cuts .Then there is a dettle you can use for cleaning .
I understand why some parents do it but our skin has thousands of good bacteria that is getting killed off along with the bad.
I grew up in the Australian outback and would ride my motorbike all day so you can imagine the state I would be in comming home lol.
The only time my mother used detol is when I came off my bike with some nasty cuts and grazes. It had to be bad though not just a little nick on the skin.

These people who don't like cleaning always turn it around and say it's the compulsive cleaner's fault, and they are the ones with problems, not them.

I agree, I'm a mum to a two month old, my house does get messy sometimes but it's never dirty
I feel Jeanine should've been paired up with Mark. He would've been so much gentler (and probably more efficient) than Amanda was towards her.
I wish my mum had been clean. I now have nightmares of filth and clutter and am constantly cleaning and tidying. It was embarrassing as a kid to bring friends home.
I'm really sorry to hear that... My mum is a compulsive cleaner, OCD-diagnosed and all. I remember waking up at 3am as a child and hearing her cleaning the kitchen, or having to force her out of parties because she physically could not leave before tidying everything. She is a loving mother but we still have violent arguments and I am struggling to accept her as she is despite her diagnosis. My thoughts are with you, I hope you're doing well
@@chloeg.4640 sometimes it's hard to find that middle ground. I hope you can find that balance after living with your mothers OCD habits. I know I sometimes drive my husband crazy, but since starting meds and talking about it we have both learned how to live more harmoniously. I hope you and your mother can find some balance. My thoughts are with you. One persons behaviours affect so many others. Hugs to you.

Amanda might be better at keeping her home clean but Janine is the nicer person. That dirty house doom music is gonna play in my head everytime i notice a cobweb or the oven needs a clean.

And it's not healthy for the kids with zero germs but with chemicals. How could the kids survive outside?? That's mental.
A part of me hated her when Janine was getting emotional and explaining how strict her mother was when she was a child about constantly making her clean and never letting them have a life, which is similar to what Amanda is doing with her kids now. She could have learned a very valuable lesson from Janine, but instead it went straight over her head because she thinks being sterile makes you a superior person.

She's projecting. By judging other people, she's really having a go at herself.
It's great to help someone clean their home but there's no need to berate them and act all high and mighty. It just makes you look nasty and hurts the other person.
Amanda seems very privileged to me. Good finances, immaculate health, lot of free time,… it's not hard to keep a clean house, when you have all this going for you.
That Amanda's kids are going to grow up with a lot of problems and really resenting her if she's not careful.

Amanda was damn right rude, I could feel Jeanine's pain when Amanda told her to get rid of everything even if it's sentimental. I would get on with Jeanine better than Amanda. I'd think I tell Amanda where to shove it!
She didn't tell her to discard everything, she told her to put it away and have some order. Those precious memories were collecting dust and getting ruined by accumulating dirt. How's that for keeping those important sentimental things?

The first woman is so rude I have ocd and have to have things in order and clean, I dont think she should be telling someone she doesn't know to throw special things away and speak down to her ive had ocd all my life and never judged or disrespected people, and her 2 children look unhappy the other lady's children look so happy.

Amanda is very rigid & controlling. I like her clean house & believe children should have discipline but she goes too far. Also going into someone else’s house & being so rude about it is very unkind. Janine is definitely too disorganised & her house is unhygienic. She needs to spend some time cleaning & teaching her children to be a bit tidier.
27:08 Just because a child hasn’t played with a toy in 6 months, doesn’t mean they don’t care about or want that toy anymore. The toys had probably been lost in the mess for so long that they were wondering where they went but didn’t know how to look. No need to throw away a CHILD’s toys unless they’ve said they don’t want them anymore. It’s a very sad childhood Amanda’s kids are living, in my opinion. I didn’t grow up that way so maybe it’s different but I can imagine it would be stressful when you see how other people live and you know you’ll never be able to relax in your own home.

My parents also threw out heaps of my stuff including books I had purchased with birthday money. I was so upset about it. They didn't even have the decency to ask if I still wanted them or not. It's a really shitty thing to do to your kids!
My parents used to toss toys I left out on the floor. It wasn't their responsibility to clean after me and I learned that cleaning after myself is important.
It's not just about cleaning. Those houses are so neglected and starting to fall apart. That can't go on forever.
Avril is obviously depressed and puts on a front. Yes she's lazy but you can see a real lack of motivation too which is sad. Mark is a sweetheart and very patient.
Can I just say that these OCD people are absolutely amazing and are not daunted by all these cleaning challenges they face. Thanks for helping others ♥

Somehow I admire OCD cleaners who still manage to keep pets of the fur variety. Also shows how illogical OCD is, their pet will never be very hygienic, but they have no qualms cuddling them.
Amanda appears to be a control freak, she doesn’t strike me as having OCD….

She said if there left on the ground as in if they have finished playing and left it there and not tidy it up then she puts it in the bin
She has not done anything wrong in my opinion. Teaching her children to put their toys away in the correct place after playing with them is good discipline and structure which children need. Dettol is used safely for bathing by many people around the world without harm coming to them, it is a mild disinfectant and it tends to keep away staph and other skin infections.

Are you for real? When children are getting sexually, physically or mentally abused, then you can call social services, not because a mum tells her children to tidy their toys away, and if they don't then she will put them in the bin!

One of the women is ill. I know how that feels. I used to have a cleaning lady though for the things I couldn't do. Now I live with my partner and we struggle along together. I do clean but tbh my efforts can easily put me in bed for a couple days recovering.

With Janine's attitude, her two girls could end up like their mother and have a messy house. My mum used to make my brother and I keep our rooms clean and to this day, I have my home spotless.
The problem is that Janine's mum made her clean, so she has rebelled. My friend was like this because this happened to her. However, as soon as she had children, she then kept her house clean
I have a friend who is messy and a hoarder. She's a lawyer, very well put together, you would never guess. I thought the state of her house was her way of coping with the stressful work life. Until I visited her mum. Same mess, her mum is a stay at home wife. Clutter everywhere, it made me claustrophobic.
I believe it's all about having a balance: my mum was a very messy person all her life so I'm trying to make my house a tidy place. Curiously enough, my husband who grew up in a very clean house is now the messy one. I don't know how my kid will turn out to be like.
Not for sure - growing up the house was a bit of a mess, somewhat dirty and very messy but now I live alone my house is very tidy because I don't want to live like that anymore. Thankfully I am somewhere in the middle of the extreme of these messy people and the OCD cleaners.
My mother and father were both extremely clean and tidy and made us do a lot of the cleaning when we were young. Nothing at all wrong with that, it's teaching kids life skills but.... It didn't rub off on me at all. I don't live in filth by any means but I'm certainly not as obsessed as my parents were and tend to let things go every once in a while. I have severe depression and sometimes just can't give 2 shits about the state of my house.
There is something deeply off about that Amanda here. She gives off such negative cold vibes and it seems to me she has no concept of compassion or human welfare and receptivity. I fear for her poor children and the harsh and negative psychological affects she no doubt has on them. What a judgemental, aggressive and cold-hearted little snob she is. Even her cold eyes and general demeanour are grossly unwelcoming.
I know it is very wrong, but I couldn't stop picturing her in the Nazi uniform in the concentration camp "cleaning"

Actually kids build there immune systems outside not in the home .. and tou need a clean home so you don't end up sick and a dirty home can actually be deadly cos of the bacteria

I thought that, but apparently a bit of washing up liquid is a really effective flea treatment and probably much safer than the spot on treatments, which are pesticide and a neurotoxin! I'm not sure how I'm going to convince my cat to have a wash though...

Just me or 20h cleaning per week sounds reasonable? That's llittle over 2.5h per day. Takes me an hour to do only dishes and sorting washing.. Think i might be watching too much if Filth 😂

Yes, I keep thinking that... It really does take a couple of hours a day at LEAST to run a home. One hour just to clean up after cooking, including a dishwasher run. My house would benefit from 3-4 hours a day but I don't have the energy or time.
I thinks it's just enough. I'm a SAHM and need to spend from 9AM to school run cleaning ,not that anyone in the house ever notices 🤣!

It’s remarkable that the people with OCD making them clean obsessively can’t see that some of the people with filthy homes are also mentally unwell.

Children have rights to live in a clean place.Until children are not able to clean,mother must clean.If people had less staff,than was easier to clean.
Especially nowadays, we have electronics and fabrics in our homes that are treated flameretardant chemichals that gradually evaporates and attach to dust so if you have kids or pets who play in floorlevel it's wise to vacum quite frequently.
I agree my house is regularly decluttered so it's easy to clean and I tidy the full house daily (only the toys are a mess but put away at the end of the day)
And do a full clean every few days - all bedrooms surfaces cleaned, beds changed, bathroom cleaned, Kitchen full clean, living room surfaces cleaned, full house hover and mopping it only takes me 1 hr to do because I keep on top of it
Also the children should be learning to clean as well, it's such an important life skill.

Didn't they say she doesn't work because of "health reasons" she's on disability benefits, she doesn't work for that stuff
They said she hasn't worked for about 5 years, therefore presumably she worked before that paying into the system and contributed to the payments she's now receiving
Having chronic illness makes it very hard to do your cleaning, although I have employed cleaners for things I couldn't do. And guess what, some of them were complete c**ts, and because they could not see a disability (I have arthritis, chronic migraine, sleep disorders and psoriasis which is usually beneath clothes) they believed I was not really disabled. Let's just say, I got through a LOT of cleaners.
True, there's no excuse for a dirty house unless you are struggling with an illness, but children need to be exposed to bacteria. Otherwise they will grow up to be sick frequently
I mean its important to clean but allowing your house to get messy from time to time isn't gonna kill you. Spend your time on what's most important. Life is to short for that.
But the people on these programmes literally haven't cleaned for years or even decades!

COULD NOT AGREE MORE, IT IS LAZYNESS.
It really doesn’t help having such openly rude and ignorant people to ‘help’ with cleaning/decluttering someones home. Especially that lady who was talking down to the other mum as if she was superior to her. I understand it is not their mess to clear and they are doing someone a favour, but you never know the situation or medical history concerning the messy person, and being rude because they just assume the root cause is laziness doesn’t make the experience helpful and just causes more stress. Having a messy home is embarrassing for anyone whether they like to admit it or not. And let’s face it, bleaching your house after you have a guest or wiping your countertops 10x a day is completely obsessive and excessive, not to mention a waste of time. Germs (good and bad) are everywhere and a little exposure strengthens your immune system. Both sides have a lot to learn and none of these people are perfect.
Every time Mark went into her bedroom Jeannie lay provocatively across her bed. He doesn't look like a babe magnet he must have strong pheremones. Seriously he was kind and did a cracking job

I would be DEVASTATED If my mum tossed out my sentimental items. Even if they don't get used. They have memories. Like, I have a toy dog that I had as an infant. I don't play with him anymore. But he's part of my memories. If mum had to toss him I would have been utterly upset.
Amanda needs to relax. Stop being controlling and unwind.
Seeing them swab that cat, it makes me wonder how clean they are themselves. I would be very curious to know what the bacteria count is on their skin, or my own for that matter.
