I'll preface my comment with: I realize he made a poor decision the last visit. But he was trying to do the right thing this time. He could've easily lied again, but he decided to be truthful, and it worked against him. My heart breaks for the grandfather 😢 He just wanted to see his children and hold his grandbaby for the 1st time. He paid his debt to society over 40 years ago. That kid was just power-hungry! He could've let that man in.
Asm per his 40 year old conviction, certainly yes. But staying 3 years on a 6 month visa is quite another bowl of soup. In that end, the young "power hungry" kid actually has no choice. If he is to wave the breach of a visa rule, the guy has to prove that it would cause great trauma or other serious consequences that he couldn't produce as he could see his grandchild outside Australia and thus was not subject to serious consequences when denied entry. Don't judge the guy doing his job properly as he is supposed to do. Judge the people who made the laws he has to uphold. And when you do, also give a thought to the reasons behind that law.
I strongly disagree. If it had been my choice I would have forgiven the bank robbery if he had gone to the consulate while he was still in the UK. However, he lied on his last visa and overstayed it by 2 1/2 yeasts.
I understand they want to protect their country but it was really not logical. So mean. Thankfully I never wanted to visit that country (beautiful country.)
Really it's his own fault. If he had just gone to the Australian Embassy in the UK and applied for a visitor visa there they would most likely have taken on board that the conviction was a long time ago and if he hasn't done anything since they they would probably grant it and he would have sailed through on arrival. However he lied about it once before and then did it again leaving them no choice. Obviously he's embarrassed about it but the people in the embassy have probably seen it all before and deal with this stuff every day.
I agree. I believe he can apply for an exemption and because the crimes were 40 years ago he has a great chance of getting it. However he also overstayed a previous visa by 2 1/2 years....
1:42:57. Now this man I actually have sympathy for. To a certain degree. As he says. Even though I understand that it is a serious case, Why should he be still held accountable for something that happened 40 years ago. That is seriously ridiculous. I mean, does this mean the man is now prevented from ever traveling abroad? He should however have declared it on arrival. In fact, he should have even known the facts regarding his former conviction before he left England. Now, on the other hand there is also the matter of him actually overstaying the conditions of his visa on a previous occasion by over two years and no... I do not believe his telling of the story that he just wanted to make sure his daughter has settled in and made friend and such. Sorry buddy, but that does not warrant a three year stay when your visa was clearly issued for only six moths. Why is it that I have never ever even traveled abroad, yet I am aware of all these regulations, yet people who often travel, seems oblivious to it? It makes no sense.
Yes. Once you have a criminal record you’re ineligible to be permitted for entry into almost all countries of the world legally. Doesn’t matter how long ago it was, he should’ve thought about it before becoming a criminal. People from other countries aren’t even eligible to apply let alone come to the border to plead their case.
I believe everyone commenting on the grandad situation got it wrong. I’m 99% sure his visa got cancelled because of the major violation he committed the last time he was there - overstayed by 2.5 years. That’s a crazy long time. And he never paid the price for that. Until this moment. Also it’s really strange that border control didn’t realize how long he’s been there illegally when he was leaving the country after 3 years. Even without computers you could tell by checking the visa and the entry stamp.

I agree with you. It’s more frustrating that these Australian custom officers allow them to commit serious crimes like this. I mean $360 fine is pennies to these people. In where I am, they will be prosecuted, not just fined, as that’s malicious with ill intent to deceive local regulations and strict import laws. The problem is Australia is too lenient to all these Chinese who know exactly what they’re doing.
True. At this point, i believe the reason why he told the truth about everything is that he genuinely dont want to jeopardize his entry and genuinely just want to spent his days his his family and probably not over stay again to be able to come back if needed be without scrutiny.
Between 1788 and 1868 more than 162,000 convicts were transported to Australia. Of these, about 7,000 arrived in 1833 alone. The convicts were transported as punishment for crimes committed in Britain and Ireland. 1:42:50 penalised 40 odd years after a major breach of law. Perhaps they are right in stopping entry, but the authorities could have tempered justice with mercy to allow his family to meet with him under customs controlled conditions at the airport, before exiling him.
While agree about what you say about being punished for a crime committed 40 years ago, he also lied and overstayed his welcome by a long time. I do feel sorry for him. He just wanted to see his granddaughter and his daughter.
Lying about a criminal record is a reason to refuse entry on it's own, but it doesn't mean he would have been refused as it's so long ago. It's that he stayed for 3 years on a 6 month Visa that did him in.
What happened to that old sweet man who just wanted to visit his daughters and grandchild is the true definition of applying the law “blindly”. There is what is called the “spirit” of the law which should have been applied here. What a shame.
I think he was refused for his recent crime of lying on his previous visa application and overstaying that visa by 2.5 years. He is not a poor old man. They might have let him in if he hadn’t lied on his last visit.
He was sincere, honest, mistakes along the way, and then we watch people GROSSLY defying laws, pretending not to understand, lying that drug paraphernalia is not theirs...sheesh that gentleman had dignity, class, looked the interviewer in the eyes...
If the English 'ex bank robber' served 3.5 years of a four year sentence.... he did NOT behave himself whilst incarcerated ! If the sentence is under 5 years, you automatically get 50% reduction on entry.
concealing it in a jacket and trying to keep them from examining that jacket shows intent and knowledge that they were aware the items are prohibited and should be prosecuted yet they only give them a slap on the wrist no wonder they continue to do it no incentive to not do it
Sending grandad back home was so wrongs when others have done the same thing & slapped on the wrist & allowed to enter, like a young South African guy I just watched, he said it's embarrassing to tick tick the box, they cautioned him & let him in.
Wow, the guy visiting from England to see his daughter and newborn granddaughter being denied visa because of a conviction from over 40 years ago!! That’s so harsh☹️💔
I think the border agent was pretty clear that it was mostly due to his previous non compliance with immigration laws (previously not reporting the conviction, and over staying his visa by 2+ yrs) that caused him to reject the visa.
I feel bad for the grandfather but he should realize that it’s not just his conviction that ruined it for him but also the lying on his last trip and the tremendous over stay of 3 years at that time.

You can apply for reimbursement & they eventually pay you but I don't think they do it on the spot. You have to submit paperwork, etc. & wait for it to be reviewed. At least that's the way it is in the UK.
Hold your horses, Grampa. You stayed for 3 1/2 years illegally last time. Never mind robbing a bank. Be a big boy and have your family go to your country to visit.
The guy couldn’t see his children and grand children… but the people who knowingly bring in prohibited items are allowed to come into the country. What?!?
Hold on: Never mind the bank robbery: (1) he overstayed his visa last time by 6 YEARS, and (2) he lied on his visa about committing a crime because he was afraid he wouldn't be allowed in. This guy seems to feel that the law does not apply to him if it doesn't fit his agenda. Glad he was denied.
IKR! He did his time and shouldn’t keep being punished 40 years later, especially since he hadn’t got in anymore trouble. No wonder he lied the previous time. It really hurt my heart to see him so emotional.
That poor guy just wants to see his kids and his grandkid that's so sad. He was so honest this time he was clearly living a better life like just trying to be upfront and honest about absolutely everything and they still denied him. I get that he lied on his last Visa but like dude come on they should have been able to look that up on their own
I was very surprised to find that Australian customs inspections do not impose bigger charges or take strict action against people bringing in illegal items. People who deliberately lie and try to hide illegal items into the country are getting away with it all too easily.
Agreed. His conviction was spent. All I saw here was a signal vindictiveness on the part of the Australian Border Force. Meanwhile, Australia is actively being invaded by shamelessly dishonest smugglers of contraband of the most disgusting damaging kind, allowed entry and let off with a paltry fine. Why? DEI?
Everyone’s talking about how the older gentleman was denied because of the crime he committed. Are we forgetting he stayed 3 years instead of 6 months the previous time, which could’ve possibly meant he was working within that time? Plus he lied about the conviction previously.
I wonder if those two grandsons did this to their grandmother. For the grandfather, yeah, it sucks. It wasn't the conviction 40+ years ago, it's your non-compliance since. They can come and see you. This show is a great message and warning to people that a criminal record CAN follow you for life.
As an American I sure wish our border was this secure and regulated. And why is it the Asian people always forget, didn't know, or just flat ignore claiming items. Things that are legal they still say NO and get fined. It's ridiculous from my point of view.

@@1lolofred I'm well aware of what birds nest is & how they procure it. Just bc you think it costs more than my weeks pay doesn't mean it tastes good or is even good for you. It's a possible transmitter of avian flu. That's why it concerns me.

@@Jens-Viper-Nobel🙄
I strongly disagree. If it had been my choice I would have forgiven the bank robbery if he had gone to the consulate while he was still in the UK. However, he lied on his last visa and overstayed it by 2 1/2 yeasts.
The UK is a long freaking way to come to have to turn around and get back on a plane home.

@@THEprettygirlnyfl unfortunately doesn’t meet Australia’s strict character rules for entry because of the conviction.
Officer Andrea is one of my favorites 😊
Oh they know. They just play dumb like they don't so hopefully they will get a pass and be able to get away with it.

Apparently not, but a nice man is deported for a cime he committed and paid the price for FORTY years ago!

What happened to that old sweet man who just wanted to visit his daughters and grandchild is the true definition of applying the law “blindly”. There is what is called the “spirit” of the law which should have been applied here. What a shame.
That’s why it’s important for officers and judges to have the power of discretion.
I think he was refused for his recent crime of lying on his previous visa application and overstaying that visa by 2.5 years. He is not a poor old man. They might have let him in if he hadn’t lied on his last visit.

If the English 'ex bank robber' served 3.5 years of a four year sentence.... he did NOT behave himself whilst incarcerated ! If the sentence is under 5 years, you automatically get 50% reduction on entry.
Maybe today, but were the rules the same 45 years ago?
concealing it in a jacket and trying to keep them from examining that jacket shows intent and knowledge that they were aware the items are prohibited and should be prosecuted yet they only give them a slap on the wrist no wonder they continue to do it no incentive to not do it
Sending grandad back home was so wrongs when others have done the same thing & slapped on the wrist & allowed to enter, like a young South African guy I just watched, he said it's embarrassing to tick tick the box, they cautioned him & let him in.

I think the border agent was pretty clear that it was mostly due to his previous non compliance with immigration laws (previously not reporting the conviction, and over staying his visa by 2+ yrs) that caused him to reject the visa.
it's not because of the conviction. it's because of the concealment
