  • Jordan Creek in the Oregon Coastal range flows into the Wilson River. It is a fun Class 3 to 4- run that is mostly pool drop. We took a few people that probably should not have going on this run yet and the results where entertaining to watch

    At least folks who swim that much might consider putting more floatation in the bows of their boats. Makes them easier to shove into an eddy.

      I have never done bow float bags but it is a good idea. Especially on a tight, continuous creek with few eddies like this one.

      2 different kinds of boating. With an IK, you can do harder stuff, but a hardshell will let you carve down the river like a sports car. The IK is just a mini raft.
      If you hardshell, you need to do it a lot to stay sharp and do a lot of roll practice too.

      I love blaming my lack of skill on my boat. A bigger boat will help mask shortcomings in technique and skill but a smaller boat will make you make sure you get it right. This run was a step up for a few of the people that were there. I am sure they will kill it next time.

    • @phoenixamaranth
      @phoenixamaranth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True to some extent but part of skill is knowing the right equipment for the conditions and paddler level. Taking a playboat, a boat designed to stay in a rapid, means you've upped the required skill level to get out of a rapid without swimming, particularly a hole, several fold. I noticed you're in an actual creeker but most of the others weren't and they got churned. Boats are designed for specific types of conditions and styles of paddling. Someone taking a big water river runner/playboat would definitely have to have far more experience and skill to run it down a narrower creek like this without bailing at least once.

    Great Job! First it looks like you forgot yourself hunting the green boat (starts 3:20). What if you got stucked or pinned? I see you are an experienced paddler, but even you are experienced, this river seems like Grade III to IV. Recovering a Kayak for such a long distance alone in White Water and far away of anyone who can assist or help is near to suicide. Fortunately in 5:42 i saw your comrade coming along. Stay healthy an be aware paddling dangerous water without any peer!

      If you wouldnt paddle a river solo, you sure in hell shouldnt paddle it with others. It is just totally irresponsible to willfully put your life in others hands on a river that you cant be self sufficient on. I have paddled thousands of miles of whitewater solo, personally, and prefer it. Most of the time fellow paddlers wont be able to do much rescueing anyway.

    • @timlayzell5093
      @timlayzell5093  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ignorancekillsdumbamerican8518 I think there are a lot more aspects to consider besides just getting rescued. This weekend I missed my boof on a 20' drop. I ended up swimming because I was pinned under the curtain of the falls. My only option was to swim to river right and my kayak ended up on river left. This all happened in a walled in canyon with 2 more drops directly after the one that made me swim. The people I paddled with had to throw me a rope so I could get back over to the side of the river where my boat was so that I could run the last couple drops and get out of the canyon. Without a team that would have been a very different situation. This happened at Shippards on the Lower wind in Washington. I can see your perspective based on your experience but I do not agree with it.

      There were some beaters that day for sure. The narrow spot we call the pinch is really tricky and often portaged at higher water. At low water everyone breezes through no problem. when high you have to time the boof perfectly and hit the left side of a 7' wide slot. All that said it is by far my favorite creek to run.

    • @wjennin1
      @wjennin1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Eh, it seems like the crew was willing to take less experienced paddlers and the troubles/slowdowns that come with them. Other than the one bad strainer it didn't look like an especially dangerous creek to take a step up on. Tons of places to portage and tons of places for a swimmer to get out of the water.
      Hell, I just looked it up on American Whitewater and the first line in the description is "This is a great place for up and coming paddlers to learn safe creek boating skills."
      The best way to improve is to paddle a touch above your pay grade with more experienced paddlers who are willing to help you out. I'm sure everyone learned some sort of lesson that day and that's a win.
