Mermaid Flounce Skirt Pattern // Making A Lemon Print Dress

  • Today I wanted to show you all one way to create a flounced mermaid style flared skirt pattern. There are many different ways to draft styles like these, from a gathered flounce, to a gored skirt, to a more circle cut flounce or ruffle like this one! I chose to test out the new skirt shape with some fun summery lemon print cotton.
    While I do think this busy print could perhaps use a big navy blue belt to cinch in the waist a bit, I'm excited to wear this new dress out in the summer time one day!

    First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

    Italian over here, happy to help.
    I can't recommend places in Italy without mentioning my city, Torino, it's beautiful, biggest ancient Egypt museum in Italy, there is the royal palace, and the hunting palaces in stupinigi and Venaria (which are Versailles inspired). I did visit Venice a few years ago, but I honestly found the small islands around Venice to be more interesting and cute. If you want to go in the summer... Not in touristy cities, I made the mistake to go in august in Florence and in Rome (in different occasions) and yes, it's not ideal.
    Ghiaccio is the word for ice you were looking for.
    In the summer we all escape to the beach, Sardinia has the best water over all, super green and clear, but there are great beaches also in Sicily and Puglia. Naples is also beautiful for the history I just personally haven't been yet.
    But I think I would go on forever recommending Italy..

    I am Italian and from Rome, so I am biased ahah Also love Naples and Sicily! But anywhere, really, you can find beautiful places to visit!
    Ischia is great; the Sicilian small islands (i'm very partial to Lampedusa); the Tuscan countryside; Umbria with the gorgeous hills and the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi ; Matera with its cave dwellings; Pompei; Villa d'Este just outside Rome, a Renaissance villa with 100 fountains; Abruzzo has gorgeous protected areas; medieval Bologna and byzantine monuments in Ravenna; near Naples there is an underwater Archeological Area... so many things to visit and only one life!
    (The Italian word for ice cream is "gelato", btw, for "ice" is "ghiaccio")
    Gorgeous dress as usual!
    (Edited for the nth time to say: if you would like recs for museums in Rome or Naples - since they're the ones I know- I'd by happy to tell you which ones are my favourites!)

    Hello Bianca! If you go back to Italy, I think you should actually go to Naples, it's absolutely stunning. I've only been there on a school trip unfortunately, my favourite place was the majolica cloister of the monastery of Santa Clara, which would actually go quite well with this dress. Also, Naples is close with Pompeii, Salerno, the hometown of limoncello, Caserta and its royal Palace (absolutely amazing, I'd love to visit it again), Amalfi and a lot more. Plus, pizza.
    It's even hotter than Rome, though, definitely don't go in July. In any case, the Italian word for ice is "ghiaccio", with a hard g :)/

    I've been to Venice Carnivale a few times and adore it and would love to go back (though I know there are issues with over crowding and tourism which would make me think twice about it in the future). I'd like to go to Florence and Rome as well, possibly Naples. I really want to go to New Zealand at some point in the future.

    Brilliantly done! I do love the mermaid style (and mermaids in general, as you might have gathered lol) and I must say you've inspired me! I've just received two vintage patterns from the 80s and 50s and have started ordering from Truly Victorian!

      Thank you! I used to work for a mermaid tail company (the swim fabric kind, mostly for kids)...and it ended up being kind of awful, so unfortunately mermaids have been tainted for me 😅 I love Truly Victorian patterns now, they have always worked out for me so far!

    • @tiamatmichellehart6821
      @tiamatmichellehart6821 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheClosetHistorian The mermaid community has a reputation for being rather toxic, though I'm not entirely sure why that is. Raven, the woman who made my silicone tail, attests this and generally likes to swim alone or with a few sweet exceptions; she has had hundreds of clients and done tails for professional films, but her mermaid meet-up (the one in my music video slideshow) consisted of only five maids!
      I'm not sure if that is the sort of thing to which you were referring, though. When you worked for the company, I hope your fine craft was not overtaxed by coarse demands!

I love all of Italy but had so much fun participating in a wedding party parading through the streets of Florence when I was last there, as they did in the 1400's or so. Yay this dress came out so cute and fun!
    I live pretty close to Venice, but I have to admit that i don't really like go there.. I miss going to Rome, when I was younger I used to go there a lot for political manif and the like (or EuroPride where I got to see Lady Gaga!). Definitely come here in spring or fall or (if you're not planning to go to the beach) even in winter!
    After the panasonic is over I'd like to go back to London too (and I will be forever angry at brexit for making it more difficult)! I'd also like to go visit some friends around Europe (something i was just starting to plan.. in february 2020................)
    I try not to think about it too much.
    Also, question: I never use facings because I don't have a serger and i don't know how to finish the facing hem in a way that is both efficient and not bulky... any suggestions?
    Also also: the italian word for ice is "ghiaccio" (/’ɡjatːʃo/) ;)

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Andrea! Darn that Brexit for real, just such a hassle for everyone involved, yikes! As for facings, even just using pinking shears to cut them out will help with most fabrics unless they are quite loosely woven, or using a wide width zig zag stitch along the edge instead of serging, also binding with something very thin. I like rayon seam binding for this purpose, as it is super tissue pater thin so it doesn't add muck bulk for sure, Hug Snug is a brand name I like but I imagine there are others!
