Just found an interview from the "My Favorite Headache" era where Geddy says he "occasionally", turned the neck pickup down on his Jazz bass to even out the output of the pickups, so his bridge pickup was always weak, Moving Pictures is both pickups wide open, this was recorded with his neck pickup turned down, mystery solved!
@@kevinsheppard2312 I think my original reply got deleted because I included a link so I'll just omit it. In an interview from 1980 he confirms that his 4002 was used in the studio (maybe some songs on 2112? Edit: he says Madrigal is his fretless 4001, possibly Different Strings?) and in another one he explains that the mysterious 3rd SC-40 in his live rig was set up for his Jazz bass with a different EQ like I previously suspected. He also said he never recorded with his 3001, which would point to Circumstances being his Precision bass (or a different Precision bass) like you thought
Although due to the way the pots work in the Jazz, the weak bridge pickup would be totally inaudible even though it’s wide open because of the Audio taper pots.
Is that fret buzz I hear on high attack open strings? Not a bass player but this rhythm track is Level 11! Thanks for sharing these isolated tracks. They open up a whole new vista to the music of my youth and on.
@@Dobie_ByTor 100% it is! I find bass players are too scared of fret buzz than they should be. Of course you don’t want it on a guitar but it adds character in bass.
Neil's 12" double headed tom was always cranked tight and stood out in the mix over all of his other toms. Such a distinctive sound that I love, but a lot of people think he's going up to the 10" concert tom, because it's tuned so high.
Definitely the jazz. I’ve had people argue with me that this song was the Ric mainly because Geddy states he only used the jazz on Moving Pictures. I’m 99% sure Spirit Of Radio is the jazz as well.
This made me think a fun game would be "Can You Guess What Artist and Song This Is?". If I only heard this without you telling me, I'm not sure I would have guessed it right.
@@darrinhowse2399 I downloaded this bass and drum thing quite a few years ago but the original uploader disappeared so I figured I’d just fill the vacuum. I’ve used Moises, I’m experimenting with a paid one called Fadr which is pretty cool I’ll see what I can do.
@@darrinhowse2399 the surround mixes can be a bit challenging to get or pricey but it would have been from when they remixed it in 2011 I think. And there might have been a surround mix in the recent box set.
Just got ahold of the 5.1 Signals Mix and there's some pretty cool guitar parts that are relatively clean. There's obviously going to be a bit of bleed but I reckon you will appreciate it. Standby a couple days.

@@Farewelltokingz yeah you have a very small threshold where you can blend.
2024 now. I was 12 when this came out. I’m still in awe.
Same. 👍🏻
How this man (Lee) managed to sing over these busy basslines is a mistery. He's obviously a genious.
I was glad he actually mentioned this in his memoir; it wasn't something that came naturally. He had to practice hard for every song.
Or genius
Mr. he's not a mister, but his prowess could be considered a mystery
That 12" closed tom in the opening fill is SIIIIIIIIIICK!!!!
One of my favorite Rush tunes. Especially the bass
Its a handful to play lol
Man the bass playing is SICK on this track. One of Ged's best ever. Hell, one of rock music's best ever bass lines.
Soooo many great bass lines running through sooo many songs, miss these guys in concert.
Never knew there was a double stop (2:14) in this tune and I must have listened to it hundreds of times easily. Thanks for this.
Never heard it til now. Wow.
Well...... That was an eye-opener, for sure. This is going on my study list!!

I agree with the guitar iso track. What a difference it makes with guitar. 🎸

Thanks for sharing. I always loved this bassline, so hearing it so clearly is just awesome.
And he was singing too ! ! ! 👋
Sounds like the Jazz Bass with both pickups, doesn't it?
i would agree, it doesn’t have the same growl as the ric
Yes!
fantastic! what year was this recorded?

A master bass player
Geddy's had lessons... -nods sagely-
Geddy Lee 💪
Great!
Fantastic!! Any chance of hearing the isolated guitar, please, please, please!
If I ever get my hands on the 5.1 mix I’d definitely do it!
@@kevinsheppard2312 Are you using Moises? And is the 5.1 mix from that special release? I'll buy it and I already have Moises.

What are these drums? They are not right.
This is taken from the centre channel of the 5.1 remix so it is not the whole surround spectrum, just mono.
This is obviously a Rickenbacker than Ged is playing.
Prog reggae bass 😂
