LOL same thing happened to me with a Flycolor 150A - now switching to a Seaking 180A. I guess sometimes you just get unlucky.
Honestly have never had any issues with HobbyWing as I use them in my helicopters, cars, and a couple in my race buggies, but crap happens!! Good on ya bud for being real, and some good laughs too!! 👍🏼
Omg I love the editing lol, I was dying laughing lol. Yea sometimes they are DOA, sucks for sure but at least it was only a 30a version, not so expensive

Oh man the magic smoke at work again..Its a right of passage..to be a true Rc Boater you have to at least smoked something!! Loving how everyone in the comments can relate and has been there, done that!! Myself included..I will say my one experience so far has been with a hobbywing 30 too. Not going there again!! I cracked up at this vid brother. My fav part was when the ESC failed at everything..even a paper weight. Ahh man you are the Wizard of RC Boating!!
Lol B the movie up in smoke came to mind lol , my dad and I have been there same brand , we no longer buy them for our helicopters. Be neat to see the second set up run on water with that extra wieght. 👍 Great video and funny lol

I have that same 30a esc for a project boat, havent read the manual in awhile but I thought it was only rated up to 3s? Funny stuff brother I'm glad at least it happened on the bench for ya, saved the boat and got it on film👍 I'll be leery using mine
Yes your correct the esc is only rated for 3s. That's what I had on it 3s battery. (I was referring to the flycolor 30a esc it's 4s capable)
Love your channel sir, I just have a question on my stock v1 sonicwake esc. On my first few runs I ran it on 4s and it was great, not too hot and batteries were fine. Then on my next outing I tried 6s and it ran great. I brought it in and opened the canopy to see smoke come out, it still works but the capacitors in the battery wires are popped and melted. Esc still works, should I be worried? I thought about adding my own cap pack on the battery leads or replacing the esc all together. Maybe the raider 150? What would you do?
Ahh man The magical black smoke of death. I feel for you on this one. I hear you on the hobbywing ESCs. I have never been a big fan of them and had my fair share of issues. How it goes with the hobby and we learn overtime. Overall good video with great information had me laughing on some of the editing. I’m good for you to share this video the goods and the bads of this hobby and a lot of people can relate.

But hey, stuff happens. At least you did everything right with your preparation and it was a faulty ESC. Unlike me who hooked up two 6S batteries to my Geico 36 (the two ESCs and two motors are 6S capable right?) without realising there was a series connector in place. The result when I hit those on/off switches simultaneously rivalled the New Year fireworks in London! Man I leaped across the workshop like a scolded cat!! I just can't understand why those 120A Dynamite ESCs didn't like 12S and 44 volts!! 😬😂

Hobbywing car ESCs have been working well for me. Have had a few stinkers over the years from all manufacturers. Tekin and Novak were no exception.

Some random thoughts: Something shorted out the windings on the outrunner and started a failure mode in the ESC, but since there was a short circuit, little to no current flowed through the fault. Then you attached a working motor; the current began to flow, and Voila! Magic Smoke! I too, damn near spit out my coffee..... I feel your pain, and know that smell.....
Soon as I put a little load on the boat in the pool she started smoking. Soon as I pulled the trigger. Idk. The motor worked perfectly on my last outing? Idk
I can still smell it 😂
My 1st esc was that one but a 60 amp, it acted up out of the box, by the 4th run, up in smoke, wiped out the battery too. 1st day of boating ever.... it almost discouraged me for good
I stay away from hobbywing products, I've never had any luck at all with them
Love your video, but in the future, please remember that the "Girls" love our RC toys too.

Hobbywing, Castles, Two of the same. Without warning these esc's erupts into volcanos. I seen and experiance this and other things bursting in to uncontrolable fires and in some cases exploding. Almost all times there's no way to disconect the battery. When the hissing jet flames shooting out in all directions burn out is when the battery can be snatched and thrown 10 meters away in fear that it's about to do the same. 100% Guarenteed to ruin you day. Occasionally I'll sence the feeling of success when my boat returns to me from where it was launched and that's a good day. Having to go out on the water in public to get the boat back every other time feels like the walk of shame.
I'm passionate about my boats and would never give them away, but they make me feel so bad. I thought a hobby was something that made you feel good.... sometimes.
At least you’ve got a cheap workshop heater ! What with the cost of gas and electricity you should patent it as a mobile heating unit 😂😂😂😂
Besides likely shorting the mosfets during your testing. I notice the capacitor was budged and bad when you pulled the speed controller out of box?
I noticed that too. Possibly factory defective.
Had to go grab my gas mask! Smell-o-vision worked here in Texas!

I don't have smell-a-vision but boi I could hear the arc's for days when you connected the battery connector and poof ECS goes up in smoke with a light show of more arc's.
Yikes man bad luck with hobbywing's and I received a max6 like last week to replace the stupid spektrum one. Hope I don't have bad luck with this expensive one.

Awe man, that sucks, but thanks for the laughs my friend. I think I spit out my coffee when that thing smoked on you. I have two of those 30 amp ESC's in a dual outboard boat and never had an issue with either of them, but shit happens and it was obvious that you didn't do anything wrong with the install. You should send the ESC to Charlie at Hobbywing USA along with the video. He'll send you out a replacement ASAP. If anything, Hobbywing has awesome customer service, and to be honest I have had great success with their products in both boats and RC cars. If I'm not mistaken, the Dynamite 30 is a rebranded Hobbywing 30 amp ESC - they look identical. I'm curious to see how the Mini Mono handles that big motor. I'm sure it's going to be a tight fit. Can you even get a battery to fit in that thing? Cheers brotha!

2:04 looks like a swollen capacitor (internal short). Maybe it's just what it looks like on my smartphone screen 😉

@@IRONCLADRC A swollen capacitor means that the electrolyte has dried out, often due to overheating by adjacent components or simply due to poor quality. Such a capacitor gets an internal short circuit and either ignites itself or damages other components, often power transistors, mosfets, integrated circuits. If you see such a capacitor, you should either replace it or not use the equipment. Looks like you forgot to pre set the voltage. From 6v to 7.4v. did it when I first started.
No need to pre set voltage? The esc is 2 & 3s capable out the box
@@IRONCLADRC no before you you hook battery up. My hw had me hook up 6v battery bk to program it to take 7.4v. I didn't do that and it worked for 10 sec and fried. Didn't realize what I did till I got new 1. My first time with brushless. Nitro fan. Anyways as going through install procedures and there it was bold a day. Telling me to hook up 6v to pre program for 7.4 . Just like some switching from NiMH to lipo. Wasted a great ESC. So 😡 at myself. 🤣. That happened this past fall.
