- Stand by for action! Anything could happen in considerably less than one half hour. The little fish I've had for a while, the bigger one once got away but now it's safely in the net. Let me take you back 30 years to toys based on a TV show from nearly twice that long ago. It's a funny old world. PWOR.
After the success of the Thunderbirds repeats in the 90s, BBC2 broadcast Stingray soon after
The reason matchbox made stingray toys in the 1990’s is because the BBC had reran stingray due to how popular thunderbirds reruns were. They also reran Captain scarlet and joe 90 the following year.
The release of Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds merchandise in the 90's, is all down to one of the main channels repeating those specific tv shows, for a new audience of children to enjoy.
Blue Peter even featured a Thunderbirds Tracy Island custom build, because the toy became highly sought after.
I think I was pretty deep in exam mode in those years, I know there was this renewal phase but it just passed me by unfortunately...
The large Stingray vehicle originally came with several red missiles and the Troy Tempest and Phones figures would sit inside, one behind the other, which is different to the tv show.
Commander Shore doesn't fit inside Stingray, as he was for the Marineville playset.
It's interesting to note, that while the Troy Tempest figure is quite easy to find, at reasonable prices, the Phones figure is very rare and can be very expensive.
Excellent knowledge thank you. Ironically as I dove down another rabbit hole last night I saw mention of a Soundtech Stingray but I don't think eBay has ever thrown one at me, nor have I ever seen it in the wild...
