  • This video has over 2 hours of the best music from games on the ZX Spectrum 128k. The video also showcase the best ZX Spectrum games that you can play on the retro computer.
    These were all my favourite tunes back in the 1980's and early 1990's when I owned firstly a 48k Spectrum and then upgraded to a Spectrum +2A in 1988.

    In 1986 my older brother bought a spectrum zx800 and man this takes me back this was like magic it was so amazing to hear sounds and see the colours like these back then. If we had been told how computers would advance and how quickly we wouldnt have beleived it todays technology would have been akin to magic.

    Platoon... really loved the music for this. Haunting, and I remember listening to it for ages! The game was tricky.

    Isn't the very first one (Agent X II) 48K music? Sounds like it, at least (which doesn't mean it couldn't be good).

      Raw Recruit, too.

      +Pedro Timóteo No. While the background theme is technically from the beeper, the drums are definitely from the AY chip. Search for video "M9hPOUvgKTA" (by Factor6) to hear the difference between the 48k and 128k versions.

      It's the 128K version because the AY chip produces the snare drum sound. The 128K spectrum still had the 48K beeper as well so you could use both at once.

    • @jamyskis
      @jamyskis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed. It's the snare drum that gives it away, but in this case the AY chip's snare drum really only complements the original 48K beeper theme. The AY-free version is available on TH-cam for comparison (v=qONN-YvJYZg), and I recall that Tim Follin used this trick a few times (including with the Chronos theme, which is essential listening by the way).
      OT: I know TH-cam names can be and often are faked, but THE Allister Brimble, of early-90s-era Team 17 fame?
      Edit: Just noticed that I've essentially reposted my own comment from a year ago!

      Thanks for the replies. Yes, I now see that the drum sound is from the AY chip in both Agent X II and Raw Recruit. I had never heard something like this before; the one game I knew about that uses both the AY and the beeper for music (Chase HQ) did it the other way around.
