I need to patina very intricate wired jewelry, pendants and rings, bracelets. This is great info. I wish my stuff was not going to be against the skin. It was recommended to use the liver of sulfur. I’m not sure that any safer for that than the more natural solutions.
Randall, my man! I have very much appreciated your encouraging comments all during this TH-cam journey, and I want to thank you for being just so dern cool!
Man, this is without a doubt the best TH-cam video I have ever seen. You are a shining lighthouse of a human being, and the world is most definitely better that you're in it. Thanks for bringing so much joy to my day, loved this.
My father in law use to make copper countertops venthoods and sinks back in the day. He made his own book of samples using everything from vinegar to lemon juice and various exposure times. He made a one counter top where he soaked leaves in water and threw them onto the copper sheet, laying them out flat and left it outside for a couple weeks, keeping the leaves wet. When he removed them they left perfect "patina" copies of themselves on the copper. Very delicate but noticable.
Your videos are not only immensely entertaining and educational, but you are a breath of fresh air on the otherwise (mostly) negative internet. Thanks for all you do, and keep steady-craftin', Crafsman!

Ahhh, my favorite moments were the lady singing when you accidentally set fire and the joke about the q-tip!! "I've never had a hearing problem. Whatchu say?" Made my day! Ily!!
I cannot remember the last time I'd ever been so mesmerized by any video, let alone a craft video to the point where I haven't skipped a moment. I am very thankful you made this and will now have to watch more of your videos. I hope you are well!
I tried your vinegar and ammonia method today - except I smeared dijon mustard all over a piece of scratched and cleaned copper instead of vinegar. I then set it in a covered plastic container with a little cup of ammonia like you showed us and let it sit in the garage all day while I was at work. I got a real interesting patina with several shades of brown, some spots of mildly shiney copper, and blue stripes and spots. I cleaned it off with a towel and did a light buff with 0000 steel wool. There was enough salt in the mustard to get a nice amount of blue. I make wooden walking sticks and I often cover the tips with copper pipe. I am going to try a few more ideas before I do the copper on a stick. Thanks for the ideas.
A friend of mine sent me a link to your 24 frame stop motion video a couple days ago and I cannot get enough! You are a gem! Thank you so much for making these videos! I love your style and your anecdotes. Keep up the awesome work!
I'm a first time listener and now a subscriber. I love this video... You're fun and relaxing to listen to, I enjoy your humorous comments. I look forward to checking out your other videos. That last rectangle piece you had in the ammonia overnight, is gorgeous!!💙
Oh Crafsman! Your words touch my heart. When your light shines up out of my screen and get on me it loosens up some of my darkness so it can slip away to the dark where it belongs and my own light shines out just a little easier. And when it comes to easier, a little is a lot. May your blessings be up in the front seats and crowded to the voices that drown out the troubles most of your days.
Things that are abundantly clear. 1.) You're a madman. 2.) This is my new favorite channel. 3.) You've got a new subscriber. This is great stuff, thank you.
This was the first video I watched of yours because I searched for copper patina, it won’t be the last! Your videos are worth watching because of your voice and personality alone!
I just found your page! You are so much more entertaining than a lot of the soccer moms doing the same type of videos!!! No hating I'm a "soccer mom", but I'm subscribing and watching your videos first!! I also appreciate the explanations you give, instead of just showing how to do these different crafts!!! I think you're great!!
Craftsman, you are my hero. My girlfriend and I look forward to watching every new video you come out with. I even run around the house talkin like you and quotin some of the things you say and the way you say them. Your puppet even inspired us to start a channel with our own puppets, to try and put on the smiles you put on everyone’s faces. Thank you so much. Keep on steady craftin.
Thank y'all so much! :D I went ahead and subscribed to y'all's channel just now. The puppet design is WAY beyond what I do, and y'all have got some crazy voices! Looking forward to seeing what y'all do! I expect the channel to grow! :D
TheCrafsMan SteadyCraftin Thank you SOOO much for subscribing and for everything you do and how you do it. We will keep spreading the word about you, because YOU are AMAZING! Also, thank you for your book readings. We play those videos while we hang out or clean. Your voice is so unique and calming. Please keep doing those as well. And thank you for replying, we were screaming with excitement and felt so lucky. Keep steady craftin. 😊
Craft Man! I am a self taught metalsmith and I just used one of your techniques to patina a piece of copper that I hand forged into a pendant! Thank you!!!
I have been looking everywhere for really good instructions on how to patina copper. When I got to yours I found it....thank you so much. I am doing a very special project and it's so important that I get it right. I am making a matching copper flower to go with ones my Dad made 40yrs ago. One broke off on a centerpiece for a fountain. My Dad made it for my Mom. My Mom passed away 3 years ago and I am putting up a fountain in her honor. This has helped so much. Thank you
A new video, sweet! I may not do any of the things you teach us every video, but it’s so fun to watch and listen to you do it. Plus, it’s a new thing to learn. Thanks so much crafts man!
These are beautiful! Yours is the most thorough tutorial I've seen and I feel confident I can reproduce the effects you've shown. You are a gift and a blessing to the world. Amen.
I'm not even 2 min in and ive already subscribed. Dude you are awesome to listen too! you talk like a childhood friend used to know and your talking about my favorite thing. -Patina- look forward to see more videos from you.
Really enjoyed this. Very easy to understand and loved how you can use simple household stuff like ammonia, vinegar and salt to bring about color changes. you also have an easy going relaxed way about you when filming this. Thumbs up 10 times over!
lately ive been making it a habit of having videos on while i work on my art and stuff and youve been my constant companion crafsman im not really doing the same things as what youre talking about, im making dollhouse furniture right now in fact but i still feel like youve been a big help, so thank you very much
This is the Longest video i have ever sat through (honestly, I have adult A.d.d and cant stay interested in anything for long periods of time) and i was entertained the whole time! Very informative! Thanks!
I used the ammonia and salt method for some projects I was working on. Worked great just as you showed it would. Thanks for posting this video saved me a lot of trial and error time tryin to figure it out on my own.
oh wow, I have been watching alot videos on rusting and patinas to metal for crafts and art projects, and yours is by far the absolute best. Thank you so much, im gonna try all them. Thank you very much.
I love this guy. So into what he's doing, interesting and makes you not only learn but think for yourself. Like hmmm what else can I use or do. Great. Thank you
Thanks for another informative and entertaining video! I want you to know that since I started watching your channel I've been so inspired to pick back up on some crafting hobbies I haven't messed with in years and it's been so much fun.
I just came across your channel. Thank you for showing how to use patina. You have a wonderful way of explaining everything. I love that we can use household item. It is beautiful.
That was one of my favorite instructionals yet. I swear, if you were my teacher or I had your videos back in middle and high school I probably would’ve turned out to be a crafsman myself! Keep it up, all the love!
Randy (Randall Johnson) sent me the link (I'm his dad, and proud of it!), and this is awesome! Now you've got me inspired! I play bass in a metal band, and I've been wondering what to do with my plain white pickguard on my seafoam green Fender bass. Now I've got it! Going to buy a copper pickguard and put a patina on that thang!! Gonna have to study your video!!! Thanks you sir!
Steve, it's nice to meet you! :) As you can tell, I think your dad is a cool guy. It sounds like you're carrying on that tradition. ;) Thanks so much for watching, and commenting! I hope your bass guitar pickguard project goes well! (Would be happy to check out the finished project, if you're inclined! thecrafsman@gmail.com) All the best to you, buddy!
This is how discombobulated my mind was... I read that all backwards! I’m so sorry! LOL! I was thinking Randall is your dad. I apologize! Either way, y’all are a great bunch!
I liked this so much that I had to subscribe! You are so relaxed and fun to listen to. I'm a copper (among other things) crafter, and I learned a lot from you. Thank you!
Crafsman, you are a treasure. I share your videos with all my friends. I look forward to each and every one. I really liked the peanut oil results. It appeared a little more subtle than the others and I thought that was nice.
Thank you for being so wholesome and incredible, Crafsman! I've watched every one of your videos and every time one pops up on my feed I know I'm in for a relaxing, pleasant time :)
Craftsman, You are too much candy for a dime. Just found your video and it is just what I was looking for. Looking forward to your other videos. You present the information in an easy to understand way. Love your sense of humor too. Thanks for posting this. I,m sure I will use it often. Take care and stay safe.
Actually I like them all! Sometimes when I'm putting copper sheet metal on a birdhouse roof, I'll even add some miracle grow to my patina concoction. It adds some nice blues to the mix. Keep up the great vids. This is my favorite youtube channel!
I love me some Crafsman! Your video & commentary just made my day a lot brighter! I love the cobalt blue one and plan on trying it out tomorrow! Thanks for sharing your talents! 🤗🌷❤
Just what I need to see Craft Man. I have a 2005 Pottery Barn copper table. I was about ready to just get rid of it because I couldn’t figure out how to make it look better after I did some hammering work. My wife suggested that I look something up and here you are putting this together I’ll share the results when I’m finished. Thank you again. Scott H from Alameda California
CrafsMan i just wanted to say how much i love the evolution and progress of your channel, i've been following it since quite a while and everytime a new video comes up it puts a big smile on my face! Have you considered getting into some voice stuff like VoiceOverPete? Cause you got an amazing and very relaxing voice, just saying :)
Franco, I appreciate your encouragement. I've actually never heard of VoiceOverPete until right now. I'll probably stick to just doing my little MP3s for folks on Etsy, but if things slow down, I'll keep that in mind. :D
Dang it Crafsman. My kids now think we should name our new Pug puppy Randell Johnson! The kids thinks he's cooler than Batman and would even win in a battle. Way to go Randell Johnson!
CrafsMan I do love that blue ammonia piece ! My mom is still here on this earth at 94 and I talk to her every Sunday. Thank you for your steady craftin and remembering the Randall Johnsons that we often forget in our busy lives man !
Hope your mother is doing well! He reminded me to call my parents.... Though theyd probably ask why the heck I'm calling them at 2 30 am, so maybe I'll wait till tomorrow.
Just found this channel while looking for ideas to patina metal. Dude, love listening to you talk about what you're doing lol. Well more videos to watch.
This is the best demo video, ever. Thank you for posting this. I have a bunch of copper washers, and wire that I want to patina soon. I have the liver os sulfur solution, but I like the blueish look of the ammonia, and vinegar technique.
Thanku so much..I just found your channel..wow your voice feels like a big warm cuddle lol..the patina are stunning. That ammonia is amazing, the colour is stunning. Again thanku so much.. Kaz from Oz 😉😊
Mannn, it's crazy how a paint brush just changes a person's demeanor. I really don't try to be one way or the other, but sculpting and painting probably are when I dial it down the most. :)
I was happy with how that one turned out too, even if I did combust it. Also, I'm thinking about trying some Walnut oil or similar. I have a feeling many oils would work for this. Randall: L O L ! ! ! ! !
Any time one of your videos come out I get filled with joy and anticipate watching it. There’s just something about your videos and your style of crafting that I really love and it’s always a a relaxing experience
I can't decide which one I like the best! Including the painted on patina one, they're all very pretty and copper is so interesting how it changes color. Thank you for another good video!
You had me w/ the soft, soothing voice, but when you kept saying you're going to eat dinner... but one more thing, over & over, that's how you know you LOVE what you do!
Super cool crafsman! I love the blue elephant patina. Are you gonna make anything with your copper pieces? Id like to see what ya come up with. Keep steady craftin!
Thanks, Peter! Those are just samples for the video; I didn’t have much in mind beyond that. May put them up on Etsy for someone to drill and make pendants or something.
Thank you for that! And it has become a funny thing. Back when the "Sketch to Sculpt" video came out (which was more popular than I expected), I got to noticing after that, I'd get a thumb down on every video, almost as soon as it was uploaded. LOL! I got me a subscriber steady waiting to thumbs it down. :)
TheCrafsMan SteadyCraftin Well hey man...let the haters hate. You keep doing these amazing videos brother. Let them hate all by themselves. “Hatred corrodes the container it’s carried in.” God Bless brother.
Lol crafsman, love your videos even if my boyfriend thinks I'm weird for it!!! 🙃🙃🙃 Do you plan to come out with any more chickens or other creatures? I'd love to support you and get a piece for myself!!!
This has been the most fun diy metal/jewelry making video EVER. And I'm a tutorial junkie. Thank You for your knowledge, salt of the earth character, such fun humor... and for the truly ingenious way you throw in little nuggets, snack bites of phylosophy and wisdom! Keep on keeping on... spreading happy vibes and helping others to learn cool new stuff!
I need a "Randal Johnson" friend. Won't try Liver of Sulfar because ammonia is bad enough. I grew up developing blueprints using ammonia vapors. Nasty!
+100 on the q-tips. I use paper towels first to get most of the water out of my ears, then finish off really easy-like with the q-tips. No problems. Keep SteadyCraftin!
Hey Randall! When’s your barbecue? Just tell us all what to bring! We’ll make it a potluck. I’ll bring the potato salad. Can we bring our pets too? Thanks, The CrafsFans 😜
I really love all your video's, I started making jewelry over a month ago and I find your videos so helpful and relaxing, I also get a good chuckle every once in a while, like when you said " Jerry rig success " I dunno just got me. keep it up you are doing a fantastic job
;) Thanks, Jenn! You're steady kind, as always. I feel like I should have put a THIN coat up on that, but even still, it gave it a fairly dark patina. I'm going to try some other oils sometime. (Walnut?)
ohmygod I LOVE THIS. I know, I am so late to the party. Story of my life. I just found The CrafsMan and I do believe that I have found the best account, ever, hands down, period, end of story. I am on my way to binge all the episodes I've missed, starting at the beginning. So far the ones I've watched have just made me so happy! I've taken notes, shared with friends and been inspired. The content of these videos, the voice, the commentary ... bar none, best art how-to videos I've seen.
Hello there! :D There's definitely some benefit to using the false rusting. For one, you can control it and not worry about it going too far. Also, the integrity of the object is in-tact. I did this for some metal roofing one time, and felt good about it not having any thin rusted out parts like might happen with real rusted roofing. :)
Thank you, Craftman! I’m a copper fire painter- I use fire to drawn pictures and patterns on copper every day, but I was looking for a way to color some copper with ammonia. I really enjoyed your video, besides learning a lot. Thank you so much for sharing, and for keeping it real!
Thanks, Jerry! I got hold to some copper tubing and a little chasing hammer (more delicate than my heavy-duty ball hammer) to do a nice bracelet / cuff. It's crazy how heat annealing will allow that copper to be shaped all kinds of ways.
Hello, CrafsMan. I really like the blue patina that you got by suspending the vinegar and salt wash over the ammonia. The colors came out so saturated and vivid. They were all nice, but that was my best of show. I really enjoy your channel. Thank you for the CrafsMan show. 💖💡🖌🛠✂️
Glad you liked it! I couldn't get over the vibrance of that blue. Was expecting some neat color, but that just took me by surprise. And you can do even better with it by getting more creative with the salt. I just kinda sprinkled it nonchalant. :)

Mr. Johnson, I would formally like to invite you to a BBQ. I hear a BBQ with you in attendance is just amazing.

That sounds awesome
I love the look of copper vent hoods that have chasing and repousse on them.
That sounds like a wonderful approach right there. Does require some patience, but it pays off with long-lasting effects you get to enjoy for years.
I need to try that!
Tannic acid in the leaves. Neat idea!

Hey Todd! I saw someone else mention Miracle Grow. I may eventually have to try that one too!
So glad you like my TH-cam channel. :D
Man this dude cracks me up somethin fierce. Great video with some good content but the personality is what makes it shine.
Yes!! Another amazing video craftsman! Wow wow wow! All I can say is those are some beautiful patinas!
Thanks, Jacob! :) Man, I was excited with how they turned out. And they could ALL be even better!
I love me some Crafsman! Your video & commentary just made my day a lot brighter! I love the cobalt blue one and plan on trying it out tomorrow! Thanks for sharing your talents! 🤗🌷❤
Called my folks yesterday. I can't choose a favorite patina or parent, each are unique and special. Thanks for improving my weekend!
:) I always appreciate your comments, Mr. MEow!

I LOVE THIS CHANNEL AND I LOVE THE CRAFTMAN! First time ever seeing him and I'm instantly sold. Good fella for sure!
Dang it Crafsman. My kids now think we should name our new Pug puppy Randell Johnson! The kids thinks he's cooler than Batman and would even win in a battle. Way to go Randell Johnson!
That's a great puppy name! Though I don't think I'd try to battle Batman, I'd definitely join forces with him
LOL! This right here is a delightful comment! :D :D :D :D :D
Mighty nice comment! :) All my best to you and your mom! Wow... 94! I'd be delighted to hear her words of wisdom! :)
What a delightful surprise. I really needed this today. I have never heard of patinas, until now.😃
So glad you liked it! :D
@@TheCrafsMan love u 2!
Just found this channel while looking for ideas to patina metal. Dude, love listening to you talk about what you're doing lol. Well more videos to watch.
The Crafsman is who I look up to the most in life.
Wow. That's a mighty nice comment, Gar. That encourages me tremendously.
This is the best demo video, ever. Thank you for posting this. I have a bunch of copper washers, and wire that I want to patina soon. I have the liver os sulfur solution, but I like the blueish look of the ammonia, and vinegar technique.
Thank you for this video. I’m making a wire pendant for my boyfriend for our anniversary and this is exactly what I have been looking for😊
I cant tell you which one I like the best.... Theyre all beautiful and give me ideas for each one.
I can't wait till Randall Johnson gets here
I'm here
That’s when things get rollin!
That ammonia though
Thanku so much..I just found your channel..wow your voice feels like a big warm cuddle lol..the patina are stunning. That ammonia is amazing, the colour is stunning.
Again thanku so much..
Kaz from Oz 😉😊
18:10 - for a second CrafsMan became Bob Ross!! lolll............. I ♥ CrafsMan!
Mannn, it's crazy how a paint brush just changes a person's demeanor. I really don't try to be one way or the other, but sculpting and painting probably are when I dial it down the most. :)
Im so happy your video popped up in my feed! I forgot how soothing your voice is ❤ And love the crafts obviously. 😄
Another great video! I really like the look of the peanut oil method.
You can always try different spices with it
I was happy with how that one turned out too, even if I did combust it.
This is so, SO encouraging to me, Dayge! Thank you for watching!
“Don’t give this to anyone with a peanut allergy” ROTFL ! Love it!
this is the best comprehensive video I have been able to find, thank you CrafsMan!
crafsman, you can use mustard for patina too, we used to treat our opinels with it, give it a nice aged look.
Mustard also good with just sausages.
Mustard! Gotta try it, my man! Thank you!
This was by far the most informative and funniest commentary I've ever heard on a craft video!🤣🤣🤣 I'm looking forward to trying that ammonia patina.
You make me wanna do some metal working! Love listening, love learning. Keep them coming.
I'm glad to hear that, Debbie! Thanks for watching!
Mr. TheCrafsMan, you are amazing and I'm so glad to have found you. You simultaneously educate and relax me. Thank you.
:D Thank you so much for watching, and for the delightful comment!
I just stumbled across this video..I've never been so informed and entertained quite like this. I think I'm lovin' this Crafsman!
Who would thumbs down this?! Awesome video brother. Thanks for the different approaches. Gonna give this a shot...one day. :)
Wasn't me
Thank you for that!
Your voice reminds me of my grandparents and it's very soothing
Lol crafsman, love your videos even if my boyfriend thinks I'm weird for it!!! 🙃🙃🙃 Do you plan to come out with any more chickens or other creatures? I'd love to support you and get a piece for myself!!!
Thanks so much! Second release of chickens is set for Dec 11th. :)
Nasty!
I'm here for you
@@thedangersofoxygen135 You just made my week! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the smile.
I'm glad I could help.
The Crafsman once again proves his awesome
@@thedangersofoxygen135 He is awesome indeed!
I liked running blueprints. But when I was pregnant I craved the smell of gasoline. Maybe there’s something wrong with me.🤣
+100 on the q-tips. I use paper towels first to get most of the water out of my ears, then finish off really easy-like with the q-tips. No problems. Keep SteadyCraftin!
Glad I'm not the only one! :D Keep SteadyCraftin, my friend!
Hey Randall! When’s your barbecue? Just tell us all what to bring! We’ll make it a potluck. I’ll bring the potato salad. Can we bring our pets too? Thanks, The CrafsFans 😜
Probably mid to late spring, depending on the latitude and longitude.
Bring whatever you like to eat and share!
I'm enjoying these Randall Johnson comments, y'all! :D :D :D
(And I'm sure glad Randall is an absolutely wonderful sport about this!)
I really love all your video's, I started making jewelry over a month ago and I find your videos so helpful and relaxing, I also get a good chuckle every once in a while, like when you said " Jerry rig success " I dunno just got me. keep it up you are doing a fantastic job
:) SO glad you like what I do! Thank you for the encouraging words. :)
Hecks yeah Crafsman! Let me know when that Randall Johnson cookout is happenin', I'll be there.
YESSIR! :D Always appreciate you, buddy.
You are absolutely the BEST! I could listen and learn all day! Thank you for being who you are!
Gettin’ crazy with that peanut oil! 😂 Everything you touch becomes beautiful. 😘😘
;) Thanks, Jenn! You're steady kind, as always. I feel like I should have put a THIN coat up on that, but even still, it gave it a fairly dark patina. I'm going to try some other oils sometime. (Walnut?)
What is it called when someone is good at craftin? With plants its green thumb.
ohmygod I LOVE THIS.
We usually paint false Rusting at my work for miniatures but knowing the real methods is fascinating!
I love the bumpy look of the ring pieces! How did you make it look like that with just a hammer? Great video!
Thanks, Stephen! That was just a ball-peen hammer. :)
I recommend looking into chasing and repousse.
Thanks, Jerry! I got hold to some copper tubing and a little chasing hammer (more delicate than my heavy-duty ball hammer) to do a nice bracelet / cuff. It's crazy how heat annealing will allow that copper to be shaped all kinds of ways.
This is a super dope video and I swear Crafsman you are the most wholesome man around this website!
Alexander, thank you SO MUCH! Comments like this do my heart a lot of good. I'm very happy you continue to like what I do!
Who ever was doing that singing sounded like a true songbird haha, the family loves them some classic crafsman action 😀🤙
:D Thank you and your family for watching, Nova Kane!
This is the most entertaining and informative video I've ever seen. New subscriber.
This is the best intro to a TH-cam video and narration I have ever witnessed. Ever. Ever.
Any idea if this will work on Brass?
