  • With Revell Releasing the HMCS Snowberry in 1/144 scale. thought I would give you guys a look at my built up example of the 2000 release of the 1/72 kit. Unlike the 2012 release it did not have the photo etch or laser cut wood.
    Oh and I apologize for the brain fart near the end where I identify the starboard side of the ship as the port side.

    Love this Dan , I built one as HMS VERBENA for my boss who served on Arctic Convoys .he had a couple of b/w pics so I did a bit of custom building , it seems probably no 2 were the same !
    He did come to Canada to visit Sackville , sadly he died early this year . He built a beautiful mahogany and glass case to put it in - after his granddaughter got at it !

    This is the best Corvette commentary I have seen. Lots of good detail and history on the ship. I, too, had a false start in building mine and got back to it just a few months ago. I had started with the Matchbox version (some parts are dated 1979) and then was offered a Revell Platinum kit for almost nothing so I grabbed it. This added the wood and the photo etch parts and helped as I had backup if I messed up a part (and that happened). This also provided additional figures to fill the deck with sailors. I have gone with radio control and that is tricky as you have to maintain access to the interior but it is possible if you think ahead. Also adding LED lighting which will be another challenge. Now about 75% complete with a cold winter ahead so should be finished for the spring.
    Thanks for such an excellent video.

    hello, I now also have this kit in the box, the matchbox version. The kit you built definitely inspires me. 1 of the nicer models on you tube of the k166.

    I pounced on this kit as soon as I saw it today. I had one when I was 12, almost 2 decades ago, and loved it to bits. She was converted to a working, sailing ship and I spent many hours watching her meander around a boating lake. Sadly, she took a tumble off of a cupboard and smashed her stern in to more pieces than came in the kit. In pursuit of realism, I claimed one of her depth charges exploded, blowing off the stern. I sank her with honor in the bath. (Seriously, that was just awesome - Full-on nose dive!)
    I pounced on the kit as they have once again updated it to now include all around working lighting and an etched wooden deck. You can't see that and not buy it!
    I wouldn't call you out for criticizing the details. I'm pretty sure this kit is around 30 years old by now and most of the parts probably have the original moldings.

    My uncle served on the Snowberry during the war, as a radio operator. He went out one morning after shift with a few other sailors to have a smoke and they saw a torpedo coming at them. Before they could react it went under the ship and disappeared with out exploding. Luky bastardeds.

      Advantages of serving on a small ship? He and his crewmates were indeed lucky. And you were lucky to get the tale from a world war 2 veteran. The passage of time is making them rare.

    Thanks Dan! I’ll be on the hunt, although many shops have gone out of business over the years here in Vancouver BC Canada 🇨🇦 I’ll keep you informed! 👍

    The image on the side of the canon is supposed to be Donald Duck holding a bomb. I purchased the matchbox kit, many, many, years ago in my 20’s and made it straight out of the box, but converted it to R/C. Later I purchased another one, this time by Revell and added a bit more detail to it, which is how i found out what the weird looking device on the side of the gun was supposed to be. Recently I’ve fished this one off the top of the bookcase and am now trying to ‘improve’ the detail of it - some out of necessity, as the glue i used seems to have broken down and bits keep falling off! This one is also converted for R/C.
    You’ve made a very nice kit and have given me some great ideas. Thank You.

    i bought my Corvette kit (Matchbox kit) from McCormicks here in London (out of business now) back in the 90's. had the advantage of having an uncle who served on corvette's from 1942-1945 on convoy duty. gave me a lot of info on the ship's configuration. still shop at Broughdales.

    • @dansmodelworx
      @dansmodelworx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got my Ertl Logging truck there in January 1988. Back then McCormicks was that narrow store hanging off the front of house and if you looked through the connecting door it looked like the house was full of kits. Cool that you had a relative who served on a corvette. I think my father sailed on the Sackville once long after the war when she was a research ship. Oh and I worked at Broughdale from 95 to 98. (I have to go now, I'm feeling ancient)

      @@dansmodelworx you feel ancient!! shopped at McCormicks from the early 60's to the 1990's when she retired and the new guy took over.

    re: JOHN McLAREN...
    I have this exact kit & must be from 2000, Unopened NIB !
    Was going thru storage after Remembrance Day talking with my sister
    & brother in law (ex RCNavy) about my Dad’s service in the RCN years ago which brought me to a book I had on the RCN Corvettes which I gave to brother in law.
    But that jogged my memory about this model I bought back then to make & give to my Mom in remembrance of my Dad, but I never got around to it for various reasons back then & forgot about it.
    So been thinking of selling it if my brother in law doesn’t want to take it off my hands, if not was checking out $ on eBay etc to get an idea what
    I can get for it now & didn’t realize it’s worth a fair bit of
    💵💰💰💰.
    Anyhow since you’re in Vancouver thought you might be interested.
    Post back here if interested & we can take it from there.
    Cheers.

    The first time I saw the kit was by Matchbox back in the late seventies. A built up version was displaced in a along the shelves of model kits in one of the department stores in Stockholm. By then the ship modelled was HMS Bluebell and as I recall you could also make another RN version of it and USS Saucy while operated by the US Navy or US Coast Guard. They at least claimed having extra parts and decals to model either version of these ships. I have small book of the Flower class corvettes that features a small poster of the side view of HMCS Snowberry and the art work n the turret is blurred as they could not figure out from the photos available how it really looked like.

    Dan, great job on the corvette, I'm in the process building the same kit but with the etched parts and wooden decks.

    • @dansmodelworx
      @dansmodelworx  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Should be a cool build. I think the etched parts address most of the original kit's shortcomings.

    Ever seen HMCS Sackville in Halifax? Your model looks quite authentic.

    Im curious about the raised housing just aft of the bridge. Is that a radar unit? Or gun ranging? Thanks. I’ve liked the Flower class since reading The Cruel Sea a half a century ago.
    (Later that day) Got it. Type 271 surface search radar.

    Excellent job with mostly kit parts. The fit and finish of this ship leaves a lot to be desired as many that preceded us know. The 1/144 scale version is far better from what I hear. I am in a buddy build with mine. I am building the Sackville. Although a unique vessel, the fit and finish have nothing to do with its unique characteristics.
    I don't know what release I got, I guess it is 2012 as I have the PE and wooden decks. Great book by the way :) That is indeed the book par excellence if one was to acquire a book on the corvettes. The book was recommended to me by a fellow modeler when I was visiting the Sackville. Yes, she nearly sits in my backyard :)

      It's been a couple of years since Revell had it's last release of this kit.(although it was probably the best with etched metal and wood decking) I would imagine there are still examples on some store shelves. They also recently did a 1/144 version. All told I think it has been released at least 4 times. It was originally a Matchbox kit.

    It makes me sad that a lot of this model will be stripped out as I will be using the basis of the model to construct a 1/72 1970s cargo ship for my model railway! A very nice model but it shall be repurposed for a greater goal... :)

    Matchbox released that kit in 1978, perhaps it was only released on your side of the Atlantic in 84.

    • @dansmodelworx
      @dansmodelworx  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the video I said I had first seen it in 1981 or 1982, Scalemates (at least 3 years ago, they may have since corrected it) listed its 1st release as 1986. I think they are based in the UK but like Wikipedia their info comes from users. At any rate, I agree the kit was tooled much earlier than 1986, and mid 70's is very likely.
